From Fr. Joe This Sunday (January 12th) we celebrate the
Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan River by his
cousin, John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17). Now
in the Gospel according to Mark, we hear that
John’s baptism was one of repentance (Mark
1:4), and since Jesus had nothing to repent of,
why did Jesus need to be baptized? That this
event in Jesus’ life was included in the Gospels
was something of a mystery for the early Church
— and maybe even for some today. But if we
think of what we have been celebrating during
this Christmas season — the birth of Jesus on
Christmas day (God being with us as a human
being), and at Epiphany, that he came for
EVERYONE! – should we really be surprised when
Jesus submits to a baptism he doesn’t need in
order to identify with, to be in solidarity with, sinful
humanity? Again, not that Jesus became a
sinner – he didn’t and couldn’t – but that he
wanted to walk with us on our journey. What a
humble act of love, not merely allowing himself
to become a human, but WANTING to become
a human, so that he could bring forgiveness and
justice, and that we could relate more closely
with God. That is being in right-relationship (aka:
righteousness). When John the Baptist tried to
prevent Jesus from being baptized, Jesus said to
him: “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill
all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15) It is after this
baptism that God says with a voice from heaven,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased.” (3:17) As far as we know from the
Gospels, except for being baptized, Jesus hadn’t
done anything yet to deserve that affirmation,
but it is with that voice from the heavens that we
hear Jesus being identified as “my beloved Son”.
Then – after his baptism – Jesus starts his public
ministry.
It is with Jesus’ baptism that we liturgically end
the Christmas Season. (If anyone ever tells you
that the Church is old and stuffy, and takes the
fun out of life, think of this – the Church
celebrates Christmas day for 8 days! And we
celebrated this Christmas season for 2½ weeks!)
As we move into Ordinary Time this Monday,
January 13th, we can do so knowing, by faith,
that in our baptism God has named us, identified
us — you and me — as beloved sons and
daughters. Our baptism makes us brothers and
sisters of Christ, and God is “well pleased” with us,
too, when we are faithful in our relationships with
God and each other — again, that is
righteousness.

From Fr. Joe (Continued) (Continued from page 2)
Back in the November 10th bulletin the last
quarterly statement (July 1-Sept 30, 2019) of the
parish’s fiscal situation was published; and the
previous fiscal year report (July 1, 2018 – June 30,
2019) was in the September 15th bulletin. For
those who looked at those reports it would be
evident that steps need to be taken to balance
our budget. One way to do that is to raise our
parish’s income. Since that is not something the
parish leadership (i.e. the priests in consultation
with the parish finance and pastoral councils)
can control, we are taking steps to reduce the
expense side of things – which we do have some
control over.
One of those steps will be relocating the
Wednesday evening Faith Formation/REDD/
Youth Ministry programs from its current location
of the St. John the Baptist campus, to the
St. Mary campus beginning this February. The
St. Mary campus includes St. Mary Church, All
Saints Catholic School, and Gatzke Center (the
former convent) all of which are being used on a
regular basis versus, at St. John, only one day
each week. The cold weather months are the
most expensive for maintaining our facilities,
especially in regard to heating and
snowplowing. This relocation will allow reduced
temperature settings, and minimal utility usage
and snowplowing for this least-used of our
parish’s four campuses.
While change is challenging, it is also
necessary, and a sign of life – and it can also be
exciting. As we move forward with this cost-
saving measure, please be patient with the
parish leadership and staff as we strive to be
good stewards of the resources placed in our
care.
Have a blessed first week of Ordinary Time,
Stewardship in Our Readings Our baptism like the Lord's is a consecration to service. The bishops'
pastoral on stewardship reminds us that ".... there is a fundamental
obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism that people place their
gifts, their resources, their selves, at God's service in and through the
Church."

All Saints Parish Pro-Life Newsletter
Abortion accounts for over half the total amount of deaths worldwide last
year. Way more than half actually. According to a LifeSite News article
dated January 2, 2020 (see link to complete article below), of a total 58.6
million deaths worldwide in 2019, abortion obliterated 42.4 million lives.
Think about diseases like cancer or ALS, car wrecks, natural disasters,
homicide, suicide, war, acts of terrorism… none of them, even combined,
come close to the sheer devastation of human life caused by abortion.
42.4 million is a lot! It even sounds like a lot! But do we really know how to
grasp a number that huge? Do we really “get it”? The following examples
may help…
The number of deaths by abortion worldwide in 2019 was 42.4 MILLION.
Picture this...
• That would wipe out more than the entire population of Poland, or
Canada.
• It would annihilate the entire combined populations of Greece,
Austria, Ireland, Lithuania, Scotland, and Sweden.
• It would eradicate the entire combined populations of 22 states plus
Washington D.C.
• The loss of 42.4 MILLION people would be the equivalent of saying
goodbye to each and every soul in Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North
Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Rhode Island, Montana, Maine,
New Hampshire, Hawaii, Idaho, West Virginia, Nebraska, New Mexico,
Kansas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Nevada, Iowa, Utah, and Connecticut,
plus a few hundred thousand more.
• Wrapping your mind around a number like 42.4 MILLION, is like trying
to imagine the extermination of the 31 most populated cities in the
United States. Try to imagine the loss of every single human life in New
York City, L.A., Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio,
San Diego, Dallas, San Jose, Austin, Jacksonville, Fort Worth, San
Francisco, Columbus, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Seattle, Denver,
Washington D.C., El Paso, Boston, Nashville, Portland, Las Vegas,
Detroit, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Louisville, Baltimore, Milwaukee.
And to top off that list we could add Grand Rapids, Alpena, and
Presque Isle.
If 42.4 million innocent (or not so innocent) people were wiped from the
face of the earth by an act of terrorism we would be afraid, crying,
praying, angry, ready to take action, ready to fight. Remember how you
felt on 9/11? For any of us who can remember that day, it still brings tears
to our eyes. The loss of life on that day was horrific, senseless, and
incomprehensible to anyone watching the smoke billowing from the Twin
Towers... 2,977 lives were lost that day.
Horrible, senseless, unthinkable. Now imagine if 9/11 happened every
day. It is estimated that around 3,000 innocent humans die from abortion
each day in the United States alone; roughly 116,000 a day worldwide. As
Catholic Christians, we NEED to do our part to end this senseless killing. We
need to pray. We need to attend Mass. We need to come to our Lord in
Adoration and in confession and beg for His mercy and for an end to the
scourge of abortion in our nation and in our world. If we don’t feel moved
by the sheer volume of lives lost, then we need to ask Him for the grace to
be moved, and for the wisdom to understand what abortion truly is and
how it affects everyone, here in our community and all across the world.

Baptism of the Lord Page 7 January 12, 2020
Don’t be like Herod. He was afraid of a child, of
losing power, of losing control. Innocent life
meant nothing to him. Herod even killed two of
his own children because it suited his career.
How many children did Herod kill in Bethlehem
while trying to get rid of Jesus? Don’t we do this
every day in our nation? When a child comes
along and it’s going to mess up our plans, in this
country we say it’s a “right” to eliminate that
child. It’s a “right” to eliminate the threat. How
many innocent lives are sacrificed each day,
needlessly, out of fear?
Be like the Magi. Seek the Christ, and when you
find him, adore him. Worship him. You may not
have gold, frankincense, or myrrh, but you can
give him something better, the gift of your life.
Talk to him. Visit him. Spend time with him in
Adoration. You can take care of his people,
your neighbors. Think about the children born
into poverty each day. Think about the mothers
who are facing an unexpected pregnancy,
who may not have a home, a job, or any
support. Be the star for them. Show them Jesus
by how you treat them, by your generosity, and
by your mercy.
What Can You Do? A recent Catholic News Agency article addresses the false, yet often
repeated claim that thousands of women died from illegal abortions
before Roe v Wade. This claim is blatantly false. It has not only been
proven false by research, but has been directly refuted by some of those
responsible for creating and perpetuating the lies and fabricated
“statistics” that brought abortion to mainstream America. The only way
we can know the lies when we hear them, is to educate ourselves about
the truth.

Thank you to everyone who took time over the past few months to stop and sign the petition to end dismemberment abortion
in Michigan. A December 23, 2020 press release by Michigan Right to Life states that “The Michigan Values Life coalition
submitted 379,418 signatures believed to be valid to the Michigan Bureau of Elections…”
The legal signature requirement is 340,047. According to the release, “The Bureau of Elections will take several weeks to
determine the validity of the submitted signatures, and once enough signatures are confirmed the legislation will be sent to
the Michigan Legislature. The Legislature will have 40 days to consider the dismemberment ban, which after successful majority
votes will become law without Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s signature. Initiated legislation that isn’t passed into law is placed
on the general election ballot for a public vote.”
We will continue to update on the progress of this legislation as information becomes available to us. In the meantime, please
continue to pray, pray, pray for the success of this legislation to End Dismemberment Abortion in our state.

Youth Ministry Pro-Life Presentation and Pizza
All Youth (grades 6-12) are invited to All Saints Parish Youth Ministry
Wednesday, January 15 from 5:30-7:10 pm at St. John Church of All Saints
Parish. Pizza will be served at 5:30pm with the speaker starting at
6:00 pm.
Rebecca Cooper will be joining us as she gives reasons for being Pro-Life.
She will share with the youth her work as a Pro-life and Pre-born activist
helping the unborn. Open to all youth. Come and listen, you will be
impressed.
A little bit about our speaker:
Rebecca Cooper is a dynamic speaker
and a dedicated pro-life activist.
Rebecca, who has been involved in the
pro-life movement for ten years, has
extensive experience as an advocate for
the unborn. As president of Protect Life at
Cornerstone University, Rebecca spoke at
campus-wide events, led outreach and
organized an initiative in partnership with
university administration to help students
facing an unplanned pregnancy. Outside
of her involvement in college, Rebecca,
studied apologetics under Scott
Klusendorf, interned for Protect Life Michigan and the Canadian Centre
for Bio-ethical Reform and helped found The Pre-born Justice Coalition.
After graduating from Cornerstone University with a degree in Ministry,
Rebecca now works for Protect Life Michigan as their High School
Coordinator and Community Liaison. She has made it her mission to
mobilize a generation of skilled and compassionate young people
dedicated to defending the unborn.

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family,
embraced by God’s love. We are centered on the
Holy Eucharist, inspired by the Communion of Saints
and empowered by the Holy Spirit to enliven and
ignite a community bound by love. We are united in
vibrant service under the leadership of the Trinity.
Parish Mission We, the members of All Saints Parish are called as a
sacramental people to grow in our faith and
participate fully in the one Body of Christ, centered in
the Eucharist. We value each other’s gifts and talents
as we serve the needs of our community while living
the truth and love of the Gospel.
Need a Ride to Mass?
Our parish partners
with Thunder Bay Transportation Authority to
provide a ride for those who are in need.
Those who need a ride will need to call TBTA
(ph: 989-356-4596) two hours before you would
like to be picked up to schedule your ride. If
you wish to have it charged, you must tell TBTA
dispatcher you are charging it to All Saints
Parish (we will not be doing reimbursements as
we would have no proof of a ride).
The parish will cover the ride only to/from
Church for the 4 PM Saturday Mass and the
11 AM Sunday Mass (based on the hours of
operation for TBTA).
