A LETTER FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

The world feels like an uncertain, unpredictable, and unknowing place for many. How do we plan for an uncertain future? At IAMA, we look forward, holding the hands of those around us, continuing to shepherd in new voices, and telling stories that create conversations within our community. As we enter our 12th season, we are focused on the future. Not only the future of IAMA and Los Angeles theater, but of the world. We have curated a season of new plays and a new musical that reminds us what it means to be human. Connection is one of the most human experiences we can have and theater is one of the most powerful ways we can connect to a time and place.

With the West Coast premiere of A KID LIKE JAKE by Daniel Pearle, the West Coast premiere of FOUND music and original lyrics by Eli Bolan, book by Lee Overtree and Hunter Bell, and the World premiere of THE UNTITLED BABY PLAY by Nina Braddock, we will explore the threads of friendships as we have children and partnerships as we raise them —all the while discovering the meaning of “found” pieces in the world we already live in... and how to make them better.

IAMA will continue to draw a thread between ourselves and the entire Los Angeles theater community by creating art that challenges us, makes us think, and above all else, allows us to feel.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When a writer stares down the blinking cursor of their computer screen, they hope that what comes next will contain a glimmer of resonance for anyone reading. What Davy Rothbart and the contributors of Found Magazine have discovered is that a note, letter, or piece of paper found in the real world containing even a snippet of a story is often far more revealing. Without context for where these stories have come from or how they turn out, we’re left only to imagine the possibilities. That mystery — of never fully knowing — isn’t unlike the one that clouds our true understanding of one another or our ability to be fully seen. It is the space we hope to bridge to find true connection, even as, contradictorily, so many of us hide ourselves. Enter Found the Musical: a celebration of how messy and multifaceted we truly are.

Lee Overtree (Book) is co-founder and Creative Director of the Story Pirates and is the producer and host of the Story Pirates Podcast from Gimlet Media. Along with co-writer Hunter Bell, he received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Book of a Musical for Found at the Atlantic Theater Company.

Davy Rothbart is a bestselling author, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, contributor to NPR’s This American Life, and the creator of FOUND Magazine. Touring with FOUND, he’s traveled to 22 countries and all 50 states, been profiled in The New Yorker and The New York Times, and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. Rothbart is also the founder of Washington To Washington, an annual hiking adventure for city kids. He lives in Los Angeles.

Kathryn Burns (Choreographer) aka Kat Burns, is a two-time Emmy winning choreographer for her work on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Cricket Myers++ (Sound Designer) On Broadway, Cricket earned a Tony Nomination and a Drama Desk Award for her design of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Yee Eun Nam++ (Projection Designer) is a scenic and projection designer for opera, theater and any form for live performances. Recent design works include Augergine and The Canadians (South Coast Rep), Black Super Hero Magic Mama (Geffen Playhouse), Sweat (Mark Taper Forum), Bordertown Now (Pasadena Playhouse), Citizen: An American Lyric (Kirk Douglas Theatre).

Michael O’Hara (Properties Designer) is a freelance props designer. Not only has his work appeared in IAMA productions but it has also appeared on stage at Celebration Theatre, Circle X, East West Players, the Blank, Theatre of NOTE, Coeurage Theatre, The Road Theatre, the Garry Marshall, Skylight, Sacred Fools, and Artists at Play to name a few. He was the original Props Designer for three shows at CTG’s Block Party (Failure: A Love Story - 2017; Die, Mommie, Die - 2018; Rotterdam - 2019). His designs for the IAMA production of Canyon will appear in CTG’s Block Party this year. He also holds a management position at Celebration Theatre.

Rachel Manheimer (Production Stage Manager) Having managed everything from original musicals to avant garde happenings, some of Rachel’s favorite credits include Tim Crouch’s An Oak Tree, American Opera Project’s HAGOROMO, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the talented seniors at The Professional Performing Arts High School. Rachel recently returned from their second summer with the Ojai Playwright’s Festival; up next is The Art Couple for CTG’s Block Party. Ask them about the ephemeral power of theatre!

Matthew Fink (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be joining Found. A soon-to-be graduate of Emerson College studying Media Arts. Previous stage managing credits include Romeo and Juliet at Baryshnikov Arts Center, Spring Awakening, Cabaret (New York, NY), and Octopus (Boston, MA).

Trevor Lee (Assistant Stage Manager) is a freelance stage manager, taking on jobs from different theatres wherever they may appear. He graduated from Cal State Fullerton with an emphasis in Sound and Lighting design. His current experience lies mostly in stage management, but he also has experience with lighting and sound programming.

Yuri Okahana-Benson (Assistant Set Designer) is a scenographer based in Los Angeles, CA. She also is a resident artist and teaches Scenic Design at Westmont College. Edina Hiser (Associate Costume Designer) recently graduated from the USC School of Dramatic Arts where she earned a BFA in Theatrical Design. Since graduation, she has worked on a variety of theatre, opera, and fi lm projects, including USC Thornton’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, SheLA Fest’s She’s Not There, and the Kosciuszko Foundation’s 3 Paderewskis. Edina is set to costume design Carousel at Denver’s Central City Opera this coming summer.

Cymbre Walk Sklar (IAMA Producing Director) Having produced over 15 plays and events with IAMA since 2012, Cymbre is proud to call IAMA her artistic home. She holds an MFA from USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program and was a founding partner of NYC based management/production company The Group Entertainment. Cymbre is also an Emmy Nominated Casting Director at DreamWorks Animation TV.
