Concept of Research

• It is a social activity that helps to improve the processes

and products in every field of life like industry, business,

medicine, education, agriculture, economics etc.

• It is considered to be the more formal, systematic,

intensive process of carrying out scientific analysis and it

involves a systematic investigation that may result in a

formal record of procedures and some kind of

generalization



Research – a tool for management

• Research is a tool for management that helps business managersovercome conflicts, solve business problems, attain organizationalobjectives, promote knowledge, improve processes and adapteffectively to business environment

• Modern management is predominantly over-ridden with the scientificattitude and scientific methods of approach as science has helped theworld countries in their scientific and technological advancement byfinding out the solutions to the problems faced by humanity

• Research is a tool from science for good management as it makes useof methods and systems for deriving truth like science and also gives asystematically organized body of knowledge

Science of Management

The science of management may be defined ineither of the two ways:

1. An accumulated knowledge, in the form of conceptions and facts organized with referenceto the explanation of general properties, or

2. As a method of establishing management processes by techniques of observation,classification and interpretation of facts and bylogical processes of induction and deduction.



What is management research?

• Management research is an activity which isdirected towards the development of business andhence encompasses all areas of managementcontrol such as business intelligence, materials,

production, marketing, financial planning andcontrol, information processing, statistical qualitycontrol, human resources and statisticalforecasting

• In this course, research techniques and principlesare learnt, as these are important in any businesssituation

• Discuss the significance of business research inmodern times with special reference to its needsand importance

• How do you classify types of research ? Explain

with examples.• Elucidate the concept of management research as a

science with special reference to its meaning,nature and purposes.

• Take a listing of share prices for one month for some companies and estimate basic statistical

parameters.
