Safe and Caring Schools

School Parking Lot: Please Do Not Enter the School Parking Lot at school opening and closing time! Safety Reminders With the emergence of spring-like weather, we are now seeing several of our students are already bringing their bikes, skateboards, and scooters to school. With a long winter hopefully now behind us, students are excited to be able to bike, skate, or scooter to and from school and we want to ensure that their travel to and from school can occur as safely as possible. According to the Government of Alberta:

In Alberta, 85 per cent of children under 14 ride bikes. During 2005, bicyclists between 10 and 14 were the group most frequently involved in bike crash casualties. These crashes are the leading cause of brain injury among school children. The

majority of bike crashes do not involve motor vehicles. About 95 per cent of bike injuries take place when a cyclist falls or runs into something such as a pothole, post, pedestrian or another bike. Most serious bicycle crashes happen close to home on quiet streets.

To ensure their safety and enjoyment, we want to extend a few reminders to our students and their families:

• Due to limited storage and safety considerations, we cannot store scooters and skateboards in classrooms, the general office or boot rooms. To assist students with the storage of their scooters and their skateboards for the day, we will once again be opening up the garage in the morning for students to store them there for the day. For garage storage, please ensure that your son/daughter arrives to school no later than 8:00 am. After 8:00 am, the garage is closed.

• Students that are bringing their bikes to school, please ensure that they bring a lock to secure their bike to the bike stands located next to the parking lot. Students may not secure their bikes to other locations around the school such as signs or light standards.

• When on school property, students must walk their bikes/scooters and carry their skateboards. The speeds in which students can reach while on these modes of transportation, especially in congested areas, could result in significant injuries to your child and others should a collision occur.

• Please ensure that your child has the proper safety equipment when riding these items to school, and especially, a helmet. As an example, according to the Government of Alberta, bicyclists who do not wear helmets are three times more likely to suffer head injuries than those who do.

• Please take a few minutes to review safety with your child when going to and from school. Some items to review include:

• Refraining from darting out into traffic. • Stop and look in all directions when crossing

a street.

• Ride within their comfort and ability levels. • Always wearing a helmet. • Be alert as they are travelling on these

devices. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Scholastic Book Fair- THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who supported our Scholastic Book Fair. The total sales were $3008.30. This gives us a profit of $1428.94 which will be used to buy books for the Library.

GHP Dress Code For all students, please consider the following clothing expectations:

- Shirts need to have a positive messaging with slogan and images

- Undergarments or torsos/midriffs should be hidden under shirts and pants/shorts

- Shorts need to be med-thigh in length (with arms relaxed to sides, fist length) or longer

- No beach wear or sleepwear If a faculty member finds that a student is wearing clothes that does not fit these expectations, he/she will be sent to the office. Administration will ask that the student change into their gym clothes or call home for a change of clothes. When your child leaves home in the morning, please try to ensure that they are dressed modestly and following the above expectations. We thank you for your assistance with this as we enter in the final months of school. National Youth Art Week- May 1st-7th From May 1-7 2016, Canadian communities will join together to host the country's largest annual celebration of creative expression of children and youth.

National Youth Arts Week will feature youth-driven projects and events happening in communities across Canada. The week provides a space for young people to express and exchange ideas, showcase talents, get excited about the arts and celebrate their positive contributions to their communities.

By working together and taking an active role in creating events, these young leaders will build a strong connection to their community and, in doing so, they will become part of a growing national network of youth artists and leaders.

Local artist, Mrs. Dolly Bolen will be hosting “Art in the Library” everyday from May 2-6th during lunch break! All students are welcome to participate!

Chemistry Presentation Dr. Gelmini is coming out to awe students once again on May 5th with his chemical reactions and experiments. Show starts at 12:30pm. Join us if you can!

Student Learning Opportunities

Look here to find out more about life worthy learning happening at GHP! Our school has been a buzz with poetic brilliance during the month of April. Check out these inspiring poems written by students: The smell of coffee, I love it so much! The milk, the steam, the cold whip cream. The hissing and puffing of the espresso machine. I will give you my card so that I may pay. Should I make it a Tall or a Venti? (Poem inspired by a photo by Jada - Gr. 7 student) Robin by Alyssa There was a robin long ago and she would always say hello. She would tweet away, from midnight to day, the Robin was a total pro! Wolves by Laynie Dark skies in the night. Howling at the moon so bright. The wolves cry out. Potatoes by Amber Mashed potatoes are very good. My table is made out of wood. Baked potatoes rock! Potatoes can't talk, even though they probably should.

Boys that read poetry are excellent role models. Thanks to the grade 8 students who visited Mrs. Hutton’s class to share figurative language!

Counsellors's Corner GHP had the opportunity for Mrs Delhez to supervise a Master's of Counselling practicum student from City University October to March, Mrs. Jen Kuznicki. We would like to thank Mrs. Kuznicki for sharing her time and talents with us at GHP. She will be missed. All interested 13 to 17 year olds are encouraged to apply for the Youth Connect Conference from May 6-7, 2016 - The conference gives youth tools to face everyday choices and challenges through motivational speakers , group activites , and open and frank discussions amongst thier peers with guidance from skilled facilitators. Please contact Mrs Delhez at [email protected] or call the school. Anti-bullying Our grade 6 students in citizenship have been designing Ant-Bullying Logos. Fourteen finalists were judged by staff. Parental Engagement

PowerSchool –An Important Communication Tool Have you checked your child’s PowerSchool report lately? This tracking system provides communication between home and school. Check your child's attendance and marks with a couple easy clicks. All students have been taught

how to log on and check their marks. All students are required to have their agendas with them all day, everyday. Teachers and parents can write notes back and forth, and parents can see if their child is arriving late as they are stamped at the office as they come in. (If lost, students must replace them at a cost of $9.00). If you do write a note to the teacher, please ask your child to show the agenda to the teacher. You can always email our teachers by using the following email:

First initial, last [email protected] Example: [email protected] Exception: Denise Groten: [email protected]

All teachers have set up “Google Classrooms” that communicate all assignments and even have digital copies of textbook chapters! Check out these valuable Google Apps that communicate the learning that is happening in your child’s classes Thanks to Parents Who Call in their child’s absences. As a school, we follow a Safe Arrival Protocol. We are most willing to advise parents when their child does not make it to school. Our primary focus is to help keep our students safe. We call home to make sure your child did not encounter trouble on the way to school. In the event a student does not arrive to school and the parents have advised us that their child should be there, we initiate our emergency protocol to locate the missing child. It takes valuable office time to phone home to check whether or not your child is sick at home. We require that all parents call the school if their child will be absent. Messages may be left on the answering machine. Thank you for your assistance! Final Exam & PAT Schedule 2016 Please note the attached schedule for exams at the end of the newsletter. Our Part A exams, Grade 5 HLAT writing assessments and some of the grade 6 provincial achievement tests take place in MAY so please put these dates on your home calendar or FRIDGE! Morinville Community Library Summer Reading Program Here is a great way to keep your child reading all Summer! Check out our poster with information included in this newsletter.

Faith Formation

We shared a beautiful Easter Celebration in April. Father Martin encouraged all of us to imitate Jesus, come to know & love God and serve others everyday! Our grade 5 students registered in religion will be attending the June 9th Year End Mass with École Notre Dame School. More info to come!

Mastering your money,

how do you do it?

St. Albert Family Working Group

Did you know?

Everyone has an

emotional relationship

with money that started

in early childhood and

still affects the way we

spend today

Creating a budget can

become part of family

time

Spending 20 minutes a

week to meal plan will

not only save money it

will also save time.

If a budget does not

work...change it and try

it again. It just wasn't

the budget for you!

Give! Paradoxically, being

generous makes us feel

abundant and the

universe rewards us by

giving us more.

Experts say you should

not be spending more

than 30 percent of your

income on rent. Moving

to a cheaper place is

extremely freeing!

Before you spend a single

cent -- put away at least

10 percent of your

income into a savings

account.

Although Finances are a large part of being an adult, and have long

reaching effects there are no standard formalized practices for teach-

ing us about managing our finances. We have had to learn by making

mistakes.

Tips for getting control of your finances

Track Your Money. You can't decide where you want to spend your

money if you don't know where it is going!

You need to make a goal. Where do you want your money to go?

Live beneath your means.

Decide what's most important for you and your family and then

spend your money there.

Pay off your credit cards: Credit cards are usually the most

expensive form of debt. Commit yourself to always paying more

than the minimum required on your credit card.

Use cash whenever possible and avoid credit cards.

Limit the entertainment overdose. Only commit to things you can

afford and don't say yes to things just because you are invited.

Save six months living expenses: It’s critical to have a “rainy day”

fund.

Make a will: This is an essential step for all adults, especially those

with dependents.

Seek wise counsel: Don’t try to go at it alone when making tough

financial decisions.

Fund company-sponsored savings plans to the maximum.

Educate yourself: Read financial publications and consider taking a

course on basic financial management or investing.

Review progress: Every year, list the value of what you own and

what you owe. The difference between the two numbers is your

financial net worth. Save this list, date it, and compare it to your

current year’s progress.
