Dear Year 5!
A humungous air ‘high five’ to our phenomenally active class! I’ve checked the ‘scores on the doors’
for our Get Set log and we’ve recorded a whopping 490 hours and 50 minutes to date! Y6 are just
edging their noses ahead but we’re pretty much neck and neck. Both classes and the rest of the
school are recording some mightily impressive statistics and more importantly, your physical exercise
is contributing towards a healthy body and mind. A massive ‘Mo-bot’ to us all. Keep it up!
An astronomically-awesome ‘whoop whoop’ for the Y5 blog posts and incredibly entertaining letters.
It really is wonderful to hear from you, find out about your exploits, tomfoolery and see your creative
creations! In alphabetical order: Marina – I practically ‘flippered out’ over your dolphin drawing, was
absolutely flummoxed by your geographical brainteaser of a haiku and immensely enjoyed your
intergalactic flip book video blogs. Your letter and anecdote about your parrot and pigeon-feeding
misadventures were hilarious! Your tale reminded me of a memory I have of walking over Kew
Bridge, on my way to work at Kew Gardens (before I became a teacher). As I strode purposefully
over the bridge, a pigeon relieved themselves from high-above with a precision-guided projectile that
perfectly landed in the breast pocket of my suit jacket. It was a million-to-one shot, hitting a tiny
moving target from afar. I remember feeling quite confused about the whole thing … it was both
impressive and irritating (and although it’s meant to be lucky, I wasn’t so sure at the time). Please
definitely share your maths word problem on the blog – it’s excellent!
Mayar – your Bobby and Albert Einstein artwork is nothing short of genius! They look so similar! I
shared your brilliant baking collages with Sophie, who loved them! She wanted to say a super
sourdough thank you for all your creativity and effort. ‘The Good Einstein’ film cover is AMAZING!
I’m not sure the voice acting and plot will rival Pixar’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ but I might, with your
permission and artistic direction, try to develop a storyline and draft script so that we can pitch the
film concept to Hollywood. Milan – bravo on being part of a record-breaking online art class! Plunge
your whale (virtually) onto our Y5 blog! I’d love to see it. I’m sure you’ll continue your literary rat-
run with ‘Ratburger’ and I hope there’s a positive twist! The recent rain will be good for reading time
and even better for your garden fruit cocktail of watermelons and strawberries! I was emotionally
moved by your touching blog. I hope you enjoy my response 😊.
Roman (or should I say ‘Riemann’) – your mathematical blog was more than ‘relativity’ entertaining.
Your visual formula of pictures added with explanations equalled an entertaining and educational
post. Willow – congratulations on soon-to-be acquiring a kitten! A pet is both a wonderful privilege
and responsibility. I know you’ll be both caring and dutiful. I’m so pleased to hear that Noah is
racing around on a bike and I’m sure you’ll master the puzzling pavlova with a little positive
persistence! That’s a lot of ‘Ps’!
I’m rapidly running out of space so, for a quick-fire update – all the usual customary details, activities
and highlights are below. Bobby is now ‘tutu-free’ and had a wonderful time in the park with one of
her best friends … a white cockapoo called Teddy. She’s still trying to eat things she shouldn’t, such
as leaves and sticks, but she’s relishing being able to race like a horizontal, supersonic rocket after a
ball again. Sophie’s baking activity is still booming and I even helped her deliver bread to the
doorsteps of some of her rugby teammates. I’ve signed our class up for an eco-DT design challenge
in collaboration with other schools, led by Queensgate School. Details in the General Learning from
Home pack. There’s a 10-day time limit for the task so get designing!
On a more serious note, many of you may have seen or heard about the anti-racism protests that
have been taking place around the world following the death of George Floyd in America. In school
you have learnt about The Civil Rights Movement, with influential people such as Martin Luther King
Jr. and Rosa Parks, who campaigned to change laws that were unfair. To find out more about anti-
racism please visit BBC Newsround and First News (we post First News in the Learning From Home
section of our website each week). We continue to teach and learn about equality and respecting
other people in our PSHE learning /learning about ourselves, and through our school values of
Friendship, Trust and Peace.
