NURTURING CATHOLIC LEADERS FALL 2012 A Home Away From Home e Falcone-Arena (FA) House is the hub of Catholic life on Duke’s campus. Located right across the street from East campus, it is home to three seniors who live in the residential area on the second floor. It is also a haven for many Catholic Students who utilize the rest of the house to study, hang out, cook, and pray together. With beautiful spacious rooms and large windows, the FA House becomes a “home away from home” for student during their time at Duke. A large number of the activities hosted by the Catholic Center occur at the FA House—Daily Mass, Tuesday Night Dinner, Bible study, weekend retreats and community gatherings. Many Catholic students also find refuge in the FA House when their Duke academic load is overwhelming. Especially during exam periods, Catholic students flock to the FA House instead of the library to study because they enjoy the supportive and familial atmosphere. Senior Emily Mattoon said, “It was the perfect place to go study because there were always people around who were more than willing to help with problem sets or just help keep you motivated to work hard. e house has a really relaxed and supportive atmosphere that helps you to keep everything in perspective even when you have a lot on your plate.” e FA House is also home to a small Chapel that seats 20 people. Alumni and former FA House resident Rob Won said this was one of the best aspects of living in the house. “e biggest draw to living at the FA House was the chapel. During my time at Duke, I learned a lot about the Eucharist, and Adoration became a big part of my prayer life. Whether I was feeling stressed, sad, or joyful…Jesus was there waiting for me…and kept me going through the ups and downs of college life.” 2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT Super Bowl Party at the FA-House DID YOU KNOW? I grew up in a small “row house” in Baltimore that was maybe 900sq.ft. When I left home after high school to enter the seminary (yes, I went from high school into seminary!), I remember coming back home for the first time and thinking how small my house was in comparison to the huge seminary building in which I lived. I could feel the walls closing in, but even still – it was home. I am sure some of our students have similar experiences as they come and go from Duke, but I know that they always feel at home when they are with their family wherever that may be. We want that very same experience for the Catholic students who come to Duke. We want them to feel at home because they have found a family here. Creating a community that supports one another is a key component of our ministry. We want our community to be founded in and guided by the Spirit, and we are grateful that we have the resources that assist in that endeavor. Our Falcone-Arena House adjacent to East Campus is the place that can be a home for so many of our students. We are blessed to have it. What is more important is the home you have helped us to create for Catholics at Duke even

beyond our building. If “home is where the heart is” then certainly “Church is where the Spirit is.” As this Annual Report indicates the Holy Spirit has been at work in our midst helping us to celebrate God’s Kingdom as the Catholic Church on Duke’s campus. Our generous supporters—alumni, parents, faculty, staff and the Diocese of Raleigh—have given us the resources to build a spiritual home for our students. The question is— “Is it big enough?” We want a bigger house! Not a building, but we want to create more spiritual square footage on campus for our Catholic students to live their faith and feel at home doing it. We are in the process of completing a strategic plan that will guide our growth efforts for the next three years. Once it is affirmed by our Board, we will share it with all of you. We need your continued support to build that kingdom for Christ so that our hearts will be at home here at Duke and wherever the Spirit may lead. Thank you for your generosity and be assured of my prayers for you wherever you may call home.

Home is wherethe heart is

During the Spring Board meeting, the Duke Catholic Center Advisory Board elected two new board members who will each serve a three year term. Elizabeth Riegel, graduated from Duke in 1989 with a degree in English and Fine Arts. Liz comes to the Board with substantial experience in Catholic youth ministry. Her many involvements include serving as a college campus minister, founding and directing the Life Teen program in her local parish which involved 300 parish youth, training youth lectors, and has been active at her children’s school by putting together programs and speakers on topics such as bullying, healthy friendships, sex and internet education. Liz lives in Cary, NC and has three children currently ages 13, 11, and 9. The second newly elected board member, Beat Reinhart, graduated from Duke in 1983 with a degree in Economics and German. Ten years ago he received his M.B.A from St. Peter’s University in New Jersey. Beat brings wealth of experience in the financial industry to the Duke Catholic Center Advisory Board. He has served as Vice President of Commerzbank AG in New York where he supported the merger of Germany’s two largest banks and lead strategic business development group for North America. He currently spends his time in consulting and enjoys horseback riding, family, friends, and Switzerland.

Welcome! Duke Catholic Center Advisory Board Elects Two New Board Members

The Duke Catholic Center is blessed to have offices in the basement of the Duke Chapel in the heart of West Campus. This summer, this space was renovated to create offices for Catholic Center staff, and a new space for student gatherings. During the day, the Catholic Center receives a lot of foot traffic from students meeting to plan Catholic Center activities or meetings with Fr. Mike and other DCC staff. Many students also find the office a great place to hang out between classes. We are also excited that the renovations created a permanent Blessed Sacrament Chapel on West Campus so students have a quiet place to pray before of the Eucharist.

A Facelift! The recent renovation provides room for additional office space

and student gatherings

While most students are away for the summer, the Catholic Center leadership team has been busy preparing for the next school year. This is what we are most excited about for 2012-2013:

> The addition of a Music Director to the Duke Catholic Center team. The Music Director will lead Duke Catholic Choir for Mass, Adoration and other liturgical events to add beauty and reverence to our liturgical celebrations and facilitate the entire community’s worship experience.

> The addition of “Catholic Coffeehouse” programming about Catholic theology to educate and nurture students in their faith.

> The renovation of the Falcone Arena basement in order to have more space for community gatherings, Bible Study, small faith groups, and Catholic fellowship.

> Celebrating Sunday morning Mass in the beautiful Divinity School Goodson Chapel for the second year in a row.

> Increased programming for our Catholic graduate students.

> The publication of our 3-5 year strategic plan to help guide our growth in the Spirit in the coming years.

> The Class of 2016 Catholic freshman class!

Why does the Catholic Center raise money? We are committed to finding the resources to support the thousands of Duke students who are Catholic. Through continued stewardship education and a comprehensive development effort, we have seen a steady increase in the programs we are able to provide.

Are there many Catholics at Duke?Catholics account for nearly 20% of all undergraduate and graduate students. Catholics are the largest single faith on campus, double the next largest group (Jewish 11%).

Is the Center funded by the University? The Duke Catholic Center receives no money from the University budget. The Center applies to the University Student Affairs office each year to receive a few small grants for specific programs which combine to cover less than 5% of the Center’s budget.

Is there a Parish as part of the Center to also lend support? The Duke Catholic Center is not a traditional parish of families with children. Our mission is geared towards the university community. While we do have a weekly collection, this totals less than 6% of our budget since most attendees are students with limited resources.

Does the Center receive a subsidy from the Diocese? We are grateful that the Diocese of Raleigh is able to provide us grant of $80,000 a year.

How will my donation be used?Your unrestricted gift to the Duke Catholic Center will be used to provide the opportunity for Duke students to learn about their faith and spirituality through programs, lectures and other members of the vibrant Duke Catholic Community. Duke graduates are destined to be leaders. Will these future leaders be fully prepared for life’s decisions ahead of them without a faith and spiritual understanding? As most Universities today, the Duke education is mostly secular.

Does my gift count as donating to Duke University?Yes, you will receive all the benefits of giving to the University by simply designating your gift to the Catholic Center. You will receive an official tax receipt from the University as well as a thank you letter from the Catholic Center.

What is the fiscal year of the Duke Catholic Center?July 1-June 30 is the fiscal year of both the University and Catholic Center.

How will my gift be acknowledged? Each gift will receive a tax letter from the University and a thank you letter from the Catholic Center. Unless you choose to donate anonymously, you will be listed in our annual report of donors produced each fall.
