Final Knock-Out held in front of capacity crowd ….

It seems that historically we follow a small February turnout with a large audience in March for the finals, and this year was no different. The largest gathering ever for an Ottawa Branch meeting, over 120 strong, was treated to the usual fine piping and drumming of those competitors who had made the final, with the winners listed below. A huge thank you to all the competitors, as it was a demonstration of the steady results achieved throughout the winter that had the top four in each Division in the finals. The Glengarry Grade 2 Pipe Band put on another well-received concert following the solo players, a good mix of tunes that were extremely entertaining. Our thanks go out to Colin Clansey and Mark Passmore of Glengarry for again acting as our judges, and a big thanks as well to the band for providing an excellent climax to the season.

*** OTTAWA BRANCH WORKSHOP WITH JIM MCGILLIVRAY ***

Saturday 03 April 2004, registration at 12:00 (noon), 12:30 pm start.

Session 1: Bagpipe TuningSession 2: Learning New Tunes

Cost: only $10.00 for the afternoon

Place: Canadian Police College, Stackhouse Building(at the north end of St Laurent Boulevard, Ottawa)

Join us for an afternoon of incredible instruction from one of the world’s foremost pipers and teachers. More than 20 years of international prizes in all branches of pipe music lend credence to the prestigious Piper & Drummer magazine’s claim that Jim McGillivray is “one of the best all-round pipers – ever.”

Jim began piping in Kitchener, Ontario in 1966. By 1972 he had risen to the top of the amateur competition ranks and began competing as a professional. Over the next two decades he won the major piping prizes on both sides of the ocean, including the coveted Gold Medals at Oban and Inverness, Scotland, the Clasp at Inverness and the North American Championship. The pipe band world

also felt his influence. For 10 years in the 1970s he played a prominent role in the Guelph Pipe Band’s rise to the top rank of premier bands, leading the band in 1981 to it’s second North American Championship. From 1988-92 he was a member of the groundbreaking 78th Fraser Highlanders, winning three more North American titles with this illustrious band.

In recent years, Jim’s attention has turned to teaching, publishing and performing. His 1992 solo CD, made as part of Lismor Recordings’ World’s Greatest Pipers collection, is seen by many as one of the best in the series. His tutor and companion CD, Rhythmic Fingerwork, published in 1998, became an immediate bestseller and set a new standard for piping tutors. His two instructional videos, “Pipes Ready” and “Pipes Up” were released in 2000 and 2001 respectively have attracted attention from pipers worldwide.

Jim is currently the Piping and Drumming Program Director at St. Andrew’s College, an independent boys’ school near his home in Aurora, Ontario. He is also the co-founder and Director of the Ontario School of Piping and Drumming at St. Andrew’s College, one of the continent’s leading summer piping and drumming schools.

A veteran workshop, summer school and private instructor, his pupils number among the best professional and amateur pipers in North America.

Moving on to Western Canada

Archie Morrison, and his wife Aileen, have decided to head west to Kelowna, BC after many years in the Ottawa area. Arriving in Canada from Glasgow in 1966, they first settled in the Montreal area. But in 1984 moved to Ottawa, at which time Archie joined the Air Command Pipes and Drums. At his very first Ottawa Branch meeting on his arrival to the city, Archie was “convinced” to accept the position of Secretary on the Ottawa Branch executive committee, taking over at that time from Wendy Finan. Little did Archie know that he would be a fixture as the Ottawa Branch Secretary for the next fifteen consecutive years, until ostensibly he was called back in to work off his retirement by Telesat Canada to spend three consecutive winters in the far reaches of Australia. A finer gentleman and piper couldn’t be found, and it will indeed be a loss for our area. To both Archie and Aileen, safe travels and all the best in your new BC abode. You will be missed.

Memories of the Angus Gray Hall, by Neil Anderson

For those who have had a chance to hear the Glengarry Grade 2 Pipe Band this year, you’ll have noticed them playing the following new four-part hornpipe. Written by Neil Anderson of the Glengarry Grade 2 band, and the Air Command Pipes and Drums, it honours all those days and nights spent in the Angus Gray Hall (Maxville Fairgrounds, Ontario), which was sadly destroyed by fire on Tuesday 30 September 2003 (see the October 2003 Ottawa Branch newsletter for more details). There will be very few pipers and drummers out there who don’t have more than their fair share of memories of this building, particularly after the Friday night tattoo or Saturday night after the final massed bands of the North American championships at the Glengarry Highland Games. Our appreciation to Neil for graciously allowing us to reprint his tune.
