The Emerson Cup 2012 - India and Southeast AsiathCelebrating Its 5 Edition

The Emerson Cup, an annual awards competition instituted by Emerson Climate Technologies

recognizes outstanding designs and innovations in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration. The

competition, now in its 5th edition, is one of the biggest pan-Asian HVACR industry events.

Since its inception in 2008, The Emerson Cup has been a remarkable journey of excellence and

commitment. Started as an annual competition in 2008 that recognises HVAC consultants'

innovative central air conditioning designs that used Copeland Digital Scroll VRF technology, the

scope of The Emerson Cup 2010 two years later was expanded to truly fulfil the vision of "Innovation

in Climate Technologies." The competition was opened to any energy saving technology or

application from the air - conditioning, refrigeration and building industry, and it continues to be so

from there on.

The Emerson Cup has been patterned after an extremely successful conduct in China. First launched

in China in 2003, it is now celebrating its 10th edition there. The Emerson Cup - India and Southeast

Asia has a distinguished panel of judges from across Asia, consisting of industry experts from the field

of Green Building, Energy Efficiency, Engineering, HVACR Design and Architecture. Participation in

the competition is open to engineers, architects, consultants, developers, institutional owners and

students of Architecture and Engineering.

The Emerson Cup 2012 has awards conferred across five categories - New Building, New Building -

With Emerson Technology, Retrofit, Commercial Refrigeration and Students. However, 'Commercial

Refrigeration' as a category was dismissed on recommendation from the Judges.

Submissions for The Emerson Cup 2012 were exceptional. The number of nominations and the

quality grew significantly this year with entries received from diverse fields of application. This not

only indicates the growing interest of the HVAC professionals in attaining recognition for their

outstanding work, but also the constantly increasing awareness of the importance of Green

Buildings across Asia. The energy-efficient design and innovations recognized at The Emerson Cup

are setting a great example for professionals as well as students who have the will and the capability

to shape our future in a positive direction.

It is time to welcome you, on behalf of Emerson Climate Technologies, to the fifth edition of The

Emerson Cup - India and Southeast Asia awards. It has been an exciting journey since the beginning of

the awards in 2008, with continuous innovations and additions to the Cup.

The Emerson Cup has grown in size as well as reputation, and is celebrated as a platform that recognises

leadership and innovation in the building industry, promoting efficient technologies in air-conditioning

and refrigeration systems. It enables us to recognize leaders in HVAC design and gives these creative

designers an opportunity and incentive to showcase their outstanding work.

It is exciting to witness the phenomenal growth of The Emerson Cup competition across India and South

East Asia in the past five years. The response from the industry has been exceptional and we have a large

number of entries from senior professionals as well as students who are taking the lead on energy

efficiency and conservation to create a sustainable future for all of us.

We have once again an eminent panel of international judges who have been extremely supportive of

this initiative and whom I would like to sincerely thank for their unparalleled support. I would also like to

thank once again the participants of The Emerson Cup from across India and Southeast Asia, for their

strong contribution to making The Emerson Cup a continued success.

Project criteria for professional categories:

Submitted projects were evaluated based on innovations in the following:

PROJECT EVALUATION CRITERIA

1. Design Approach (25%)

2. Energy (35%)

3. Environmental Quality –Indoor and Outdoor (15%)

Accounting for a quarter of the evaluation criteria, design approach includes an inclination to sustainable design

that values the environment and the use of natural resources – such as solar power or wind patterns – as a

fundamental aspect in designing or modifying a building while maximizing the use of energy efficient and

ecological materials. Also taken into consideration is an improved load optimization and reduction that

enhances the building’s capacity, performance and energy efficiency ratio while reducing cooling demand.

One of the key focuses for project evaluation is the overall energy efficiency of the building that reflects its

sustainable design. The project should exhibit fine practices such as the use of renewable energy, good strategy

in system integration and control, high energy efficiency etc. The actual measured energy usage is also required

as a design proof.

Environmental quality underscores the use of eco-friendly refrigerants or those that have low global warming

potential and ozone depletion potential. At the same time, the observation of precise thermal comfort and air

quality while maintaining a low sound for acoustic quality will be accounted for.

4. Economics (15%)

5. Technology (10%)

Note:

Design a “Green and Sustainable School”

Note:

Another factor that affects the project evaluation is the building’s life cycle cost, or the total life span cost to

purchase, install, operate, maintain and dispose the project. An analysis of the life cycle cost of a building

translates to the selection of the most reliable option among different solutions – providing the best return on

investment.

Another area to be measured is the project’s reliability of design or its ability to withstand time or other related

factors while maintaining simple procedures for operation and maintenance. An ability to cater to a wide range

of modulation capacity based on demand - scalability - will also be assessed.

Measured performance data shall be submitted to verify the innovation• Not applicable to commercial refrigeration category

Project criteria for student categories:

Topic for Engineering/Architecture Students:

The project nominations for the students’ criteria shall be in the form of project report and must be executable.

Nomination Pre-Requisites (not applicable for Students)

Projects / building executed / commissioned and in running condition with measured performance data, for

minimum 6 months

Building should be conditioned (not applicable to commercial refrigeration category) – conventional

/non-conventional systems

Projects nominated for previous years could be re-nominated this year, subject to meeting this year’s

nomination criteria – other than previous Emerson Cup awarded projects Design projects in the field of

heating, ventilation, air - conditioning and refrigeration technologies were evaluated based on the

following criteria:
