I love everything about the holidays; the celebrations, special foods, decorations, time with family and friends. I get nos- talgic about earlier times in my life and for those spe- cial people who are no longer with us. This time of year also makes me think about others who are less fortunate. In our busy lives, I think we sometimes don’t take the time to realize how lucky most of us are. For me, there are so many things to be thankful for this year, my family and friends, over- coming some health issues and, most importantly, the new family that I now have at Surrey. In my brief time at Surrey, I’ve witnessed the incredi- ble amount of caring that goes on here. Read the story on page 7 to learn about one family that the Surrey team helped this summer. Volunteers, board members, donors, funders and staff are all constantly engaged in offering crucial services and support to older adults. For all these folks, I give thanks because without them Surrey could not make such a huge difference in our community. At the holidays, I think about all the older adults who don’t know about Surrey and who might be alone or need help to stay safely in their homes. Our goal is to keep spreading the word about Surrey, to keep in- creasing the amount of services we offer and to con- tinue our mission into 2017 and beyond. Bob Madonna, President & CEO [email protected] A Gift with Dual Benefits Did you know a gift to Surrey provides benefits to older adults in need and may have a tax bene- fit for you? At the end of last year, Congress made perma- nent a temporary law allowing individuals to make direct charitable contributions from indi- vidual retirement accounts to qualified charities. These donations are called Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs). The benefit? If you were to take a taxable IRA distribution and then contribute the proceeds of that distribution to a charity, you would still need to include the IRA distribution as adjusted gross income. Also, QCDs automatically satisfy required minimum distributions for the year that the QCD is made. That’s an advantage for a charitably minded IRA owner who doesn’t need the distribution for personal expenses. There are a few other requirements including: Only individuals 70 ½ + can exclude a do- nated amount within the IRS defined limits. A contribution to a qualified charity is de- ductible in the year in which it is paid. There are limits to how much you can de- duct, but they are very high. A written confirmation of the donation from the charity is required to document the dis- tribution. Surrey Ambassadors Ready for Action The Surrey Ambassador program is off to a great start. In this new program, Surrey volunteers receive specialized training and then attend community events, such as church coffees or community fairs, to spread the word about Sur- rey. They met staff from different departments within Surrey and heard updates from each area about the services we offer. Now they are ready to share their knowledge. November is one of my favorite months since it signi-fies the start of the holiday season. I love everything about the holidays; the celebrations, special foods, decorations, time with family and friends. I get nos-talgic about earlier times in my life and for those spe-cial people who are no longer with us. This time of year also makes me think about others who are less fortunate. Senior Friendly Mobile Phone Options Cell phones are no longer considered a luxury item. They provide safety, security and a way to connect to the outside world. If you would like a cell phone but want to keep the costs low, con-sider one of these options. Prepaid plans If you would like to have a cell phone for emer-gencies, power failures or infrequent use, try a pre-paid or pay as you go plan. With these ser-vices, you buy a certain amount of minutes that must be used within a specified period of time. Pure Talk USA offers a Senior AddVantage Plan. This plan provides any combination of 300 min-utes of talk or 900 text messages for $10 per month. Free Cellphone You may qualify for a free cellphone through Lifeline Assistance Program. This is a govern-ment sponsored program that provides free cell-phones to low-income Americans. To find out whether someone is eligible or for more infor-mation visit LifelineSupport.org Senior Friendly Cellphone Several companies manufacture phones with senior friendly options such as a large, raised keypad, voice activated keypad and simplified features such as an “SOS” emergency alert but-ton. Some can even show someone’s location via the GPS feature which allows for assistance if the user gets lost. Three top rated are: the Doro PhoneEasy 626 sold by Consumer Cellular, the Jitterbug from GreatCall and Snapfon. Prices range from $50 to $149 for the phone and $10 and up for the monthly service, depending upon the type of services chosen.

LIHEAP The LIHEAP (Low Income Heat Energy Assistance Program) program provides grants to income-eligible homeowners and renters to help pay heating bills. LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants. Cash Grant: The grant payment is sent directly to the utility company or fuel provider, and it will be credited on the utility bill. The only exception is when a renter’s heat is included as part of the rent. Payment is then made directly to the individual. Crisis Grant: Helps families who have an emergency and are in danger of being without heat. Call LIHEAP hotline for infor-mation and income requirements 610-447-3099.

Honoring Our Veterans In honor of Veterans Day, all Veterans are invited to enjoy a free lunch at any location on Friday, November

11th. Thank you for your service to our country!

Link Program Growing Successfully In mid-August, a Surrey team began calling se-lect Chester County residents as part of the PA Link program. This program provides valuable resources and information to older adults. In each case, we try to provide those contacted with at least two options. The reaction has been great! Link counselors have shared information on topics from local dentists (including the free CVIM dental program) low vision sources, trans-portation and . . . vocal coaches. Along the way, we’ve even learned from some of you about local veterinarians who do house calls! Surrey’s Link team is here to help you with infor-mation whether you need help paying certain bills, making a decision on where to live, down-sizing, the name of local vets who makes house calls or any other of a wide range of questions or concerns. Surrey’s role is to provide information and resources and does not represent an en-dorsement of the providers.

This resource information service is completely free to our members (there may be a charge for the actual products or services). If you know of someone who might benefit from this resource, please call us directly on our Link line at 610-268-5806. Liz, Nancy, Kosta, or Colleen will be very glad to speak with you!

Our ensemble is small and all musical backgrounds are welcome. What we have in common is our love of music. If you are inter-ested, call 610 - 647 - 9172.

Volunteer Drivers Needed Surrey is currently seeking volunteer drivers to transport individuals to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other activities 4 - 5 days per month in Delaware County and Chester County. We will soon start offering weekend rides and will need drivers to help with this ser-vice. An excellent driving record is required and strong knowledge of area roads is helpful. Five Easy Steps to Take When Shopping Energy Suppliers

Personal Finance Corner By Jacqlyn Kennedy Sisson Surrey’s Daily Money Manager The weather is getting colder and the days shorter, so maybe it’s time to think about switching energy providers. The thought of finding another energy supplier can be daunting, but it’s really a simple process. Here are some easy steps to take. If you are currently a Peco customer, determine if you qualify for a lower rate from Peco through the CAP Program. The program offers seven dis-counted rate levels with a maximum monthly in-come level to qualify of $1,362 for a one person household and $1,839 for a two person household. The rate discount applies to both electric and gas service, but you must buy energy from Peco in or-der to participate in this program. If you switch providers, then you will be removed from the CAP Rate program. For more information or to apply for the program call the Peco Assistance Program at (800) 774-7040. Before shopping for a new pro-vider be sure to have the current rate from the Peco bill. The Peco “price to compare” is located on the first page of the Peco bill in the Message Center section. If Peco is not your current pro-vider, then check the generation and transmission charge on page two of the Peco bill to obtain the current rate. Think about your preference for a fixed or variable rate before beginning to shop. The variable rate will increase or decrease depending on market conditions, but the consumer may switch compa-nies at any time without penalty. It should be noted that during times of high demand, such as a cold winter, rates can rise sharply. Fixed rates will stay the same during the term of the contract, which can vary from 3 months to 36 months de-pending on the company. Fixed rate offers usually (but not always) have an early termination fee, which average about $100. The fee is charged to the consumer if they switch to a competitor during the term of the contract. Go online to www.papowerswitch.com to obtain a list of electric providers and rates or to www.pagasswitch.com for a list of natural gas pro-viders and rates. The lists may also be obtained through the mail by calling the customer service area at the PA Public Utility Commission at (800) 692-7380. The websites allow the user to screen based on different criteria, such as fixed or variable rates, plans without fees, and renewable energy options (electricity providers only). Review the lists to find attractive offers and then click online or call the companies with any questions or to enroll in a plan. Make sure that you understand the terms, such as variable or fixed rate, time frame on the contract (if there is one), and any possible fees. The supplier can only be switched on the next me-ter reading date, so it may take a month or two to make the change. Stay warm and enjoy the savings during the com-ing winter!

We thank our members for their generous gifts!

Navigating the Health Care System Navigating the health care system can be confus-ing and frustrating. Surrey’s care managers are experts who help individuals and their families to choose the best options to be able to live inde-pendently. The story below shows how Surrey’s care managers and other members of the Surrey team helped one individual and her family. Surrey’s Daily Money Manager, Jacky, received a call from a woman who wanted help for a friend. So Jacky made an appointment to visit “Kate” and see how she could help. Once she arrived, Jacky determined that Kate needed additional services to stay safely in her apartment. Wendy Walsh, one of Surrey’s Care Managers, visited Kate and conducted an assessment to de-termine her needs. Kate had not been to see a doctor or dentist for a number of years, so Wendy made an appointment with a doctor and scheduled an appointment for a free dental check up with CVIM at Surrey in Devon. Mean-while, Jacky had looked at Kate’s expenses and income to help her pay her bills. Grant funds

awarded to Surrey by TEVA Pharmaceuticals, helped offset some costs. Kate was alone much of the time in her apart-ment because her brother and sister lived in dif-ferent states. She was not eating nutritious meals regularly. Wendy worked with Surrey Transporta-tion so Kate could enjoy a hot lunch and social time with others at Devon. With Wendy’s guidance, Kate and her family de-cided the best long term plan was for her to relo-cate to a long term care facility near her brother. Surrey’s Downsizing service helped facilitate the move. “I was so impressed by Surrey’s team and how well the members coordinated services to help Kate. They kept her welfare paramount but al-ways treated her with respect and got her ap-proval before moving forward with decisions,” said Kate’s sister. Navigating the array of services available to sen-iors can be overwhelming. For more information contact one of Surrey’s care managers, Wendy Walsh or Ann Schoonover at 484- 321-6105.
