This e-Learning course has beendeveloped for midwives inpartnership with the Foundation forAlcohol Research & Education(FARE).

This course is designed for midwives who want to refresh theirknowledge on how to advise women about alcohol in pregnancy andwhilst breastfeeding and is an essential component of the WomenWant to Know project.  This project is supported by funding from the Australian GovernmentDepartment of Health and aims to encourage health professionals toroutinely discuss alcohol and pregnancy with women and to provideadvice that is consistent with the National Health and MedicalResearch Council’s Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risksfrom Drinking Alcohol. The content within this course covers: •  effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy; •  effects of alcohol consumption when breastfeeding; •  what women want to know about alcohol and pregnancy andfacilitating discussions about alcohol consumption with women; •  Assessing and advising women about their alcohol consumption •  Dealing with complex presentations and referral.

REFRESHER PROGRAM FOR MIDWIVES

This program has been designed by the Australian College of Midwives(ACM) for Midwives holding general registration with the Nursing andMidwifery Board of Australia  (NMBA).  The program refreshes midwives existing knowledge and skills by drawingon current evidence, research and practice. This is a theory based package.

Any midwife can undertake this theorybased package. This program does notinclude any clinical placement. Midwives looking to refresh their clinicalskills can find options listed on the ACMwebsite.  They must meet the NMBARecency of Practice RegistrationStandard and hold a generalregistration. Midwives needing to update clinicalskills to meet regulatory requirementssuch as conditions on registration willneed to follow the guidelines of theAustralian Health PractitionerRegulation Agency for re-entry topractice. Midwives will be able to align theirexisting skills and experience to theirrefreshed knowledge of contemporarymidwifery practice.  $999.00 ACM members / $1998.00non-members 37 Core hours + access to 16 electivehours Online study over six months from thetime of enrolment.

This course has been designed for Baby Friendly Health Initiative(BFHI) Assessors, both new assessors and a refresher for existingassessors.
