Thomas is a family-run company based in the German city of Herdorf. It dates back to 1962, when today’s leading automotive industry supplier was formed out of Robert Thomas Metall- und Elektrowerke in Neunkirchen. This company ori-ginally manufactured electromagnetic actuators for hydraulic valves in industrial and agricultural machinery as well as for elevators and church organs. The ear-ly nineties brought increasing demand for electromagnetically controlled valves that could be used for applications in the automotive and mobile hydraulics mar-kets. Thomas spotted this trend at an early stage and decided to specialize in the field. Twenty years later, this consistent focus and a series of innovative products are the main foundation of our company’s success.

Just as we did in those early days, we continue to break new ground when it comes to meeting the needs of the future. It is with this in mind that we have now expanded our portfolio into the field of medical technology. Keeping one step ahead – for over fifty years!

Our family-run company develops and manufactures customized electromagne-tic and fluid actuator systems for the automotive and mobile hydraulics indus-try. Just over fifty years since the company was founded, our core expertise in these fields has helped us evolve into one of the leading suppliers with a global presence. Our highly competitive, best-in-class products are all developed and manufactured in Herdorf by our team of more than five hundred employees. Our production systems and indeed our entire philosophy are based on zero-defect quality – right down to the tiniest detail.

In order to achieve long-term success, a company must always be on the lookout for new trends and developments. To this end, we invest more than ten percent of our revenue in research and development. Our highly qualified experts deve-lop innovative best-in-class products to meet the increasingly specialized require-ments of the automotive and mobile hydraulics sectors, with a focus on reducing fuel consumption and emissions while enhancing the driving experience. We also put our core expertise to good use in the field of medical technology.

As part of our highly efficient development process, we simulate our initial pro-duct concepts using the latest computer programs on the basis of our established design standard. We then produce a number of prototypes, and together with our customers we test how well they perform. Our project teams have everything they need in Thomas’ cutting-edge R&D laboratory, which is equipped with our own testing stations, climate chambers, a salt spray mist chamber, a vibration testing station, an acoustics room, and a scanning electron microscope.

We adopt a pioneering approach towards potential applications and markets with a view to identifying new trends and translating our research and develop-ment activities into added value for our customers.

Thomas products are specially designed to ensure dynamic and efficient perfor-mance from the engine and transmission. They create optimum conditions for thermal management and exhaust aftertreatment in vehicles and provide ex-tremely reliable and finely tuned control systems for mobile machinery. By way of example, we make metering pumps for exhaust emission aftertreatment and auxiliary vehicle heating systems, proportional solenoids for camshaft phasing, propor-tional valves for a range of applications in the mobile hydraulics field, and valves for variable flow pumps.

Thanks to electrohydraulic proportional valves supplied by Thomas, automated production and agricultural machinery can be relied on to move and carefully position heavy loads and to provide dynamic clutch control.
