Beginning May 5, fans will have the chance to choose the ACM’s Entertainer of the Year. (They’ll select from from five industry-nominated finalists. Further details are forthcoming.) Country Aircheck asked a number of radio and music industry folks for their take on the ACM’s bold move. Detailing the reasons behind the board’s landmark decision, ACM Chairman of the Board Mark Hartley told CA, “This was largely about driving viewership of the TV show. All awards shows are suffering audience erosion, and the concept was to engage the fans and create some extra excitement about the show even before it airs. We also wanted get the fans more involved in the show itself.” He added that CBS, the ACM’s TV network that had previously worked with the Grammys on a fan-based award, felt very strongly the ACM should give this a shot. But why put the ACM’s top award in the hands of the fans, instead of creating a new fan-voted award? “That was the subject of a lot of discussion,” said Hartley. “We were concerned that one award might be diminished by the other if we had two. But one of the strongest arguments against creating a new award came from an artist on the board, who said, ‘If I were to win a fan-voted award voted on by thousands and thousands of people and an industry-voted award voted on by 2500 of my industry peers, I’d be more proud of the award coming from the fans.’” continued on page 4 Rector, Michaels Battle To A Draw While not quite the “The Thrilla In Manila,” last Friday night’s “Music City Mauling” charity bout between Columbia’s Jimmy “The School Bus” Rector and WBR’s Gator Michaels provided plenty of entertainment for the more than 400 folks gathered at the event benefiting the Charley Foundation. were caught in sex scandals, ABC News Political Contributor Matthew Dowd blogs today that these women should say, “It’s Carrie Underwood Time” and “take a Louisville Slugger to both headlights.” “When is one of these wives of a high-profile politician going to finally no longer be Tammy Wynette and start being Carrie Underwood? “ he asks. Read all about it here.

Round two was all Rector. A left jab/straight right/left hook combination midway through the round sent Gator to the canvas. Asked if he was surprised by the flurry, Gator said, “I was more surprised by my age in Round 2; my legs were gone.” Round three was cut short (there were three 1:30 rounds) as Rector continued to work inside and delivered some body blows to Michaels. Checking in with the pugilists Monday morning, Rector said he bore no ill effects, expect for a “sore right elbow from throwing so many rights.” Michaels told CA it was “the most tired I’ve ever been in my life. And, in hindsight, the most foolish thing I’ve ever done.” That was a bit of déjà vu for Michaels, who before the fight watched as Rector prepared to enter the ring with a trainer, a cutter and a corner man. “All I had was three women from the label who were making sure the bow on my robe looked right.” The fight was declared a draw by ring announcer Bruce Buffer, filling in for brother Michael, who was attending a funeral, even as the celebrity judges were comparing scoring notes. Just as well, since it was three rounds for Rector on judge and Sony BMG EVP Butch Waugh’s scorecard and three rounds for Michaels on WBR EVP Bill Bennett’s card. That left it up to the third judge, CA’s Lon Helton, who decided before the bout that since both were clients, they were each getting a round and a half. Congrats to both on raising a lot of money for charity. Ya gotta give ‘em both a lot of credit.

I was 15. I already loved the voice. It was the songs that nailed me.2. Gram Parsons Grievous Angel: A high school friend who played country music with a rock attitude. Led me down dirt roads.

3. John Prine John Prine: Potent poetry. Timeless, wise, funny and sad.4. JJ Cale Naturally: “Call Me The Breeze,” “Cocaine,” “After Midnight,” etc... And incredible guitar sounds.5. More great Tulsa music, and it was followed by Hank Wilson’s Back (country covers), which converted a lot of rockers to country.A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Kind Of Blue, Miles Davis. An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys. The album you’ve played/heard more times than any other: Tie: Astral Weeks, Van Morrison and Sticky Fingers, Rolling Stones.

in support of the idea. “I love the idea that the fans will have a say in this year’s Entertainer of the Year Award,” said Warner Bros./Nashville EVP Bill Bennett. “The country music community has always been justifiably proud of the relationship our artists share with their fans. The integrity of the award, and awards in general, should be protected by the accounting of the votes, not necessarily by the constituency of the voters. This direct relationship with the fans and the ability to watch in real time their enthusiasm also adds another dimension to the show that can only add excitement.” Buddy Lee Attractions CEO/President Tony Conway also believes this is a good move. “We’ll get a real true feeling of the fans and who they stand for, assuming proper voting controls are put in place. I’ve always felt that fan votes should be incorporated in awards since they are the folks buying the music and the concert tickets; they have a strong sense of who is their entertainer of the year. Industry votes can seem to be based on hard music sales and hard ticket sales data and maybe not the unbelievable live experience that has touched the fans, which in turn gives them the motivation to vote. It also brings the fans into the process and makes them want to participate.”

Weighing in from a manager’s perspective, TK Kimbrell of TKO Artist Management, an ACM board member as well as a CMA board member, noted, “It’s a good move. I’ve been on committees that research the problems with the industry-voting procedures. I’ve personally had a big problem with these procedures for a long time. I think allowing fans to vote for

Entertainer and, hopefully, all awards in the future, is a huge step in the right direction and will enhance the integrity the ACM Awards. To allow conglomerates to have big blocks of votes is an injustice to the real integrity of the nominees and winners. I think the artist would much rather win a fan-voted award than win an industry vote that is primarily based in vested interests.”

Radio programmers were also unanimous in their support. “It’s a great move that will bring a whole new level of interest to the award show,” said KWNR/Las Vegas PD Cary Rolfe. “We’ve seen other shows do it for a few years now and it makes it exciting for the fans. I don’t believe it takes from the integrity of the award. If anything, it enhances it. Instead of jaded industry people voting or controlling the vote, you now have a wildcard with the fan vote that is not based on sales numbers or airplay -- just passion for their favorite artist.” KMPS/Seattle PD Becky Brenner added, “It adds a dimension to the award that the fans will appreciate while also creating a buzz that makes people want to watch the show to see if their person wins! The Entertainer of the Year should be

the person who has done the most to promote themselves and country music to the world at large.” Brenner offered this conundrum-creating caveat, however. “The question is, will this give an unfair advantage to heritage artists who have had years to develop their fan base? On the other hand, the newer artists may have an advantage if the younger end of the audience is more inclined to go online and take the time to vote. This will be fun to track.” Also on the bandwagon is WMIL/Milwaukee PD Kerry Wolfe, who said, “I’ve always felt that there was something ‘fishy’ with the [industry] voting anyway. I’ve heard many stories of employees at record companies that don’t get to fill out their own ballots; it’s done for them. That just doesn’t seem fair to me.” “Interaction with the audience is the future, and if we want to move this show forward the viewer/listener has to have a big stake in the process,” said WDTW/Detroit PD John Trapane. “It means more because it comes from the listener. I also think the fans should pick the songs the artists play. The younger audience wants control. On demand. If you’re not willing to have them vote on all the awards, give them control of the show and the content. Think reality TV. American Idol. Fans want to participate and be involved.” No kidding … 100% of the people we contacted were positive. If you have a different point of view, send it our way at [email protected].
