2013 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

Many thanks to the parishioners and area businesses that supported us with needed supplies, baked goods and contributions.

Also to Peggy Menard, VBS Coordinator and her team of volunteers for spearheading this years activities. The Parish children who attended “Kingdom Rock” Vacation Bible School

were treated to a week of fun-filled activities while at the same time learning about our Christian faith.

The seeds being planted today will someday grow into full faith.

“My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived,

and let me watch him do it. Clarence Budington Kelland

Christ Shares Our Experiences Does God know anything about pain? Does God

know what I suffer? Did God ever have a migraine headache, as if his head was crowned with thorns? Does God know anything about the wounded hands and feet that are brought into the accident wards of the hospitals? Does God know anything about the

starvation in Africa and India? Did he ever go without food for two days? Or three? Or five? Does he know anything about thirst? Does God

know anything about homelessness or what it is to be a refugee? To flee from one country to another? Does he know what it is to be in jail? To be the

victim of scourging? Does God know any of these things? Yes.

God is in Christ reconciling the world to himself. Fulton J. Sheen

Kings are not easily cornered. Hamlet has to put on a play to catch the conscience of the king, his own uncle, who had killed Hamlet’s father and married his mother. In the passage just prior to today’s first reading, the prophet Nathan catches the conscience of Israel’s King David by telling the story of a rich man who takes a

poor man’s beloved and only lamb and serves it up in a stew. When David angrily demands to know who this man is, Nathan replies: “That man is you.” David repents. And God forgives.

Jesus catches the conscience of a Pharisee—perhaps. We don’t really know if there is any change in Simon after hearing the story. But it is hard to conceive that he did not “get it.” Those who know their need for God’s

mercy receive God’s mercy and love in return. Those who do not recognize their need for mercy live their lives refusing to love others.

The woman had already known God’s forgiveness; she walked in freedom and acted in freedom. No judgments could stop her from honoring the one who had brought her this freedom. So she stood weeping

tears of gratitude, trying to mirror the extravagant love she had received. Simon, dry-eyed and dry-hearted, can only denigrate Jesus (“if this man were a prophet”) and the woman (“he would know who and what sort of

woman this is who is touching him” [7:39]). Simon saw only “a sort of woman.” The heart that has been forgiven is deep enough to hold the love of God and to share it with others.

Extravagance begets extravagance. Ask for the gift of a forgiven and forgiving heart. —James A. Wallace, C.SS.R.

What makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a Summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in Spring,

The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity,

The death of a family need, Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece

was complete, And so, He called it ...Dad.
