    Lesson 4: A Diverse Culture

    Overview:

    During this lesson the students will begin to understand the diverse culture that makes up

    the United States of America. The students will focus on different religions, languages,

    ethnicities and arts and cultures found in the culture of this nation.

    Learning Objectives:

    Students will be able to:

    Identify the reasons for the diversity of the U.S. population, the richness that the diversity

    has provided, and the challenges facing the United States because of it.

    Describe the arts and popular culture of the United States.

    Standards:

    Warm Up: What are some ways the make us diverse? For the warm up I will ask the

    students this question and allow for an open discussion. They have had a discussion about

    this last time so this will draw on their background knowledge.

    Materials Needed:

    Textbooks Note sheet Comic Strip Worksheet CD with different genres of music on it

    Read Aloud/Along

    The students will lead the reading starting on page 139 in their Social Studies book.

    Students will volunteer to read. However we will stop and discuss what we have read

    periodically.

    While following along with the reading we want to focus

    The following questions will be asked when reading each section:

    What are some ways that immigrants have made U.S. cultures more diverse? Explain how immigrants have made U.S. culture more diverse. How has cultural blending affected U.S. arts? Explain how cultural blending has affected the arts in the US?

    While reading we will also pause to complete the three column chart. This chart will help

    students compare and contrast the different regions.

    Assessment: The students will be given the following task:

    The editor for the Journal Sentinel has decided they want to publish a comic strip based

    on the diversity present in the United States. It is your job to take the information

    provided in the chapter with the combination of the notes you took while reading. You

    must produce a four squared comic strip focusing on one or more of the diversities

    present in our culture. For example, music, religion, language. Two of the four squares

    must also contain dialogue.

    Rubric:

    This performance assessment will be graded on the rubric listed below:

    Exceeds Met Criteria Unmet

    All four squares of

    the comic strip are

    complete.

    Two of the four

    squares have

    dialogue.

    One or more

    diversities are

    mentioned in the

    comic strip.

    Conclusion: In conclusion I will ask for a few volunteers to share their comic strip with

    the rest of their classmates. Then I will ask the students to tell me how they feel diversity

    makes up their classroom.
