Transcript of A developer proposes to build a large apartment complex next to the Cedar River. What are the likely...
A developer proposes to build a large apartment complex next to the Cedar River. What are the likely effects on the health of the river if the project is built?
Consider the likely water quality/habitat impacts from a proposed construction project at our study site (Rotary Park). How would YOUR proposal affect water quality/habitat?
• Clearing (removing trees/shrubs) and grading of the construction site will result in soil erosion, leading to increased turbidity and total solids.
• Soil naturally contains nitrates/phosphates. When soil/sediments wash into the river this adds to nitrate/phosphate levels in the water and can result in increased algal growth. Too much algae can result in low DO levels as they die and decompose. BOD increases.
Loss of shade (from removal of streamside trees & shrubs) will result in increased water temps & lower DO levels.
The Cedar River?!
The finished Project… Just Beautiful!
Oil & gas and toxic metals (from cars) from parking lots will pollute water through runoff.
Once the Apartments are built…
Phosphate & nitrate levels will increase due to use of fertilizers on grass/landscaping, resulting in increased algal growth & lower DO.
Pesticides & herbicides used on grass/landscaping could enter river through runoff and harm aquatic plants and BMIs.
