70Making a Gift to NewYork-Presbyterian
More than a decade has passed since NewYork-Presbyterian was
created through the merger of the New York and Presbyterian Hospitals.
When we look back to measure our progress, we are proud of the
extraordinary growth and achievements the Hospital has made in many
arenas – advances in medicine, establishment of new clinical programs
and patient-centered services, and expansion of facilities to meet the
ever-growing needs of our patients and their families.
A Defining Decade highlights some of the innovative initiatives NewYork-
Presbyterian has launched during the last 10 years and the patients
who have benefited from them. And while many circumstances have
changed throughout these years, certain standards remained constant:
our unwavering focus on quality care, our compassionate staff who
truly put their patients first, and our commitment to the communities
we serve to ensure their health and well-being.

Time flies. Here at NewYork-Presbyterian we forgeahead day by day, week by week, year in and year outto make this a great hospital for our patients and theirfamilies. Only occasionally do we pause to look backand then it is largely to measure our progress. At thesame time, we cannot help but note that a decade haspassed since we were created by the merger of the NewYork and Presbyterian Hospitals. Where did the timego? More importantly, how well have we used it?
At that time, there were a number of similar mergersin the country that had failed, and many questionssurrounding our own. Could we continue to strengthenthe two medical centers while blending them into onehospital, and could we make that hospital a nationaland international leader? Could we take what somepeople thought at the time was a stressed and brittleinstitutional culture and transform it into a culture ofservice, compassion, and empathy? We knew we werebig and intended to get bigger. Could we also becomevery good and establish ourselves as a high performingorganization, functioning at the highest standards ofexcellence, quality, efficiency, and compassion?
We could and we did. By any measure you choose toselect, the progress of NewYork-Presbyterian over thepast 10 years has been extraordinary. We have grownfrom just over 90,000 inpatient hospitalizations in2000 to over 114,000 in 2009. Our revenues over thesame period grew from $1.8 billion to $3.2 billion.
Our average case mix went from 1.73 to 2.07. Thismeans that we are taking on ever more complex anddifficult medical challenges. We have become thelargest transplant program in the country. We have become a leader in minimally invasive surgery, roboticsurgery for prostate cancer and gall bladder removal, for multi-unrelated donor kidney transplants, heartvalve repair, brain and orthopedic surgery, gene therapy, stroke treatment, multi-viscera transplants, pediatricheart disease, neonatal intensive care, high risk pregnancies, in vitro fertilization, and many more.
Over the past 10 years, NewYork-Presbyterian hasnamed several outstanding physicians to direct theHospital’s clinical departments. At NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, we welcomed Mitchell C. Benson, M.D., Chief of the Department of Urology;Mary D’Alton, M.D., Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology;Donald W. Landry, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Medicine; Jeffrey A. Lieberman, M.D., Chief of Psychiatry;Lawrence H. Schwartz, M.D., Radiologist-in-Chief, and Craig R. Smith, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief; and at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, Lawrence R.Stanberry M.D., Ph.D., Pediatrician-in-Chief, andCharles L. Stolar, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief.

And while the best doctors, the latest robots, and the newbuildings are all important, to be a truly great institutionwe needed to strengthen quality, safety, and patient andemployee satisfaction through cooperation, communication, and teamwork. And we did. We have made this a saferhospital with significant improvements in quality. Ournationally reported outcomes for heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia are among the best in the country. We have pioneered innovations to improve quality – ourPatient Safety Fridays and House Staff Quality Councilsare nationally recognized Best Practices that are beingadopted by other institutions nationwide.
We have made this a warmer, more friendly, more compassionate hospital as evidenced by major increases inour measured patient satisfaction scores. Staff turnoverhas gone down by almost half over the decade, and employee satisfaction as measured by a large nationwidesurvey is the highest of any teaching hospital surveyed.
We have one of the most diverse patient populations in thecountry, perhaps the world. We have become a nationalleader in medical interpreting, providing over 240,000

Opportunity Abounds At the dawn of the new decade, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital – now morethan two years into its existence as a merged entity – passes its first Joint Commission survey, withall indications that the integration of two major academic medical centers is well on its way to becoming a healthcare leader with tremendous opportunity to be an exemplary, humane force forpatients and their families. A major capital fundraising program is helping to support and facilitatethe uniting of clinical programs and further collaborations with its affiliated medical schools – Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College. Thecreation of service lines organized around patient groups and disease categories is moving forward –a further example of the Hospital’s efforts to facilitate the development of focused, high quality care.

Triumphs and Tragedy In many ways, 2001 is a very successful year for NewYork-Presbyterian.An initial budget projection of a $10 million loss is turned into a $2 million gain. The Hospital continues to push the frontiers of medical and surgical medicine, and upgrades many facilities thatmark the beginning of a major overhaul of the Hospital’s infrastructure. But there is no doubt thatthe year 2001 will be inextricably linked to the heartbreaking events of September 11. In the wakeof this tragedy, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital employees demonstrate a singular strength that provides hope. The Hospital goes into full disaster mode, with staff mobilizing to prepare for thethousands of victims who would never come and save the lives of the hundreds who did.
The first of 18 survivors of the World Trade Center attacks whowere patients in the William Randolph Hearst Burn Center is discharged from NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

In addition, NewYork-Presbyteriantakes a leadership position in defining measures of clinical quality and patient safety, evaluatingclinical outcomes using scientific methodology, and defining clinical protocols that will set standardsfor delivering quality care.
The Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services is one of the very first on the sceneof the September 11th, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, deploying 28 responders to the site that day. As a result of the unwavering dedication of thecrew, four of our EMS personnel lose their lives. In 2002, the Hospital erects amonument in their honor. Leave a Legacy by Making a GiftGifts, bequests, and trusts are important sources of support for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Such gifts allowyou to leave a legacy and help fund a wide range of programs, including those that provide patient care, educatefuture physicians and scientists, expand community outreach, and make possible pioneering clinical research that results in new and improved treatments for disease. Providing support for these programs in your estate planmakes a moving statement about your care and concern for the health and well-being of future generations.
Gifts can be made in cash, securities, or other property and can take many forms: an outright gift, pledge, bequest, or various life income arrangements (trusts, pooled income funds, or gift annuities). Support can be designated for specific purposes or can be unrestricted, which gives NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital the greatestflexibility in planning and administering programs in patient care, education, and research. Gifts to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital may be directed to either NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center or NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, or both. There are many options for naming opportunities and public recognition of gifts at the Hospital.
