Section * Alkali-Silica Reactivity Fine and coarse aggregates to be used in all concrete shall be evaluated and tested for alkali-aggregate reactivity. Both coarse aggregate size groups shall be tested.

a. The fine and coarse aggregates shall be evaluated separately, using ASTM C 1260. Test results of the individual aggregates shall have a measured expansion equal to or less than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in a 1N NaOH solution. Should the test data indicate an expansion of greater than 0.08 percent, the aggregate(s) shall be rejected or the use of Lithium Nitrate shall be mandatory at a minimum dosage of 0.55 gallons per pound of alkali per cubic yard of concrete as allowed per ASTM-C150 portland cement specification in the concrete mixture along with either low alkali cement or blended cement in the concrete mixture, and additional testing shall be performed as follows: utilize the Contractor's proposed low alkali portland cement, blended cement, Lithium Nitrate, and/or SCM, in combination with each individual aggregate. (Example dosage calculation ; Type II LA allows 0.6% of alkali per lb of cement. A mix containing 564lb /cy of cement would require the following minimum dosage of Lithium Nitrate. 564lb X 0.006% alkali X 0.55 gallons Lithium Nitrate equals 1.86 gal of Lithium Nitrate per cubic yard of concrete.) The testing shall be in accordance with COE CRD-C 662 to determine the quantity of Lithium Nitrate that will meet all the requirements of these specifications and that will lower the expansion equal to or less than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in a 1N NaOH solution. Mixture proportioning shall be based on the highest percentage of Lithium Nitrate and/or SCM required to mitigate ASR-reactivity.

b. If any of the above options does not lower the expansion to less than 0.08 percent after 28 days of immersion in a 1N NaOH solution, the aggregate(s) shall be rejected and the Contractor shall submit new aggregate sources for retesting. The results of testing shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer for evaluation and acceptance.

Alkali-Silica Reactivity Mitigation

Section * Lithium Nitrate

The lithium admixture shall be a nominal 30 percent aqueous solution of Lithium Nitrate,

with a density of 1.2 kg/L (10 pounds/gallon), and shall have the approximate chemical

form as shown below:

Constituent Limit (Percent by Mass)

LiNO3 (Lithium Nitrate) 30 +/- 0.5
