Joint Origins of “The FLOW Syllabus”● 2011-2012 growing Open Source

Initiative (OSI) interest in a learning reference to support improved free/libre/open project management competencies

● January 2013, OSI Board meeting discussion about possible collaboration on development of a FOSSBoK (Free Open Source Software Body of Knowledge) for managers;

● January 2013, The Opman Company discussed requirements with clients about an advanced training course for managers of free/libre/open projects;

● April-June 2013, The company created a re-usable compendium of libre & gratis online resources to support its own commercial services to clients, then also licensed it free/libre (dual CC-by-sa & GNU-FDL) and posted it publicly;

● October 2013, First discussions between OSI and The Opman Company about making the FLOW Syllabus an OSI resource with its own OSI Working Group.

● January 2014, FLOW Syllabus first posted on the OSI's public wikihttp://osi.xwiki.com/bin/Projects/draft%2Dflow%2Dsyllabus

Independent Learners, Advisors & Teachers● A Renewable Resource: Maintained free/libre/open, like

evolving core code in software. Designed to provide logic and method to help associate content, objectives, activities, formative and summative assessment,learning outcomes.

● Navigational Aid: Like a nautical chart for modular learning to steer clear of submerged rocks and erratic currents. It shows more than one interesting channel, and lots of open space to explore.

● Modularity and Flexibility: A “course” can be built from the modular learning sequences organized around topics of interest, and integrated through conceptual threads that run through it. The initiative belongs to the learner and teacher to follow routes of interest and identify new trajectories.

Independent Learners, Advisors & Teachers● Extensibility and Personalization: Although a working group

maintains the FLOW Syllabus, alternative or additional content, activities, and alternative learning outcomes can be integrated seamlessly through referenced links.

● Social and Affinity Learning Design & Development: Educators and independent learners can create, supply and recommend “packages” of learning sequences and provide insights about the nature and their use of the Syllabus and its content to promote affinity learning approaches, learning paths, and sequences.

● Designed for Reuse and Derivative Works: Modules within the FLOW Syllabus can be repurposed to fit within, extend or supplement a pre-existing course. Sections can be treated as “micro-courses”. Completion under certain conditions can result in a micro-credentials (e.g. acknowledged with a certificate).
