REGISTRATION FEES:

The charge per person for the conference is $25.00 for self-advocates, $60.00 for parents, and $90.00 for professionals. This includes registration, a continental breakfast, and a box lunch. Special early bird registration is $20.00 for self-advocates, $45.00 for parents, and $65.00 for professionals. Your registration form and payment must be postmarked by October 9, 2017 or you must register online by October 9, 2017 to qualify for the special rate. Scholarships are available for childcare as well as the conference. For more information, please call 703-670-4800. A half-day attendance option is available again this year; $30.00 per person includes continen-tal breakfast, the keynote speaker, and a choice of workshop in Session I. Childcare costs remain the same.

Each person must complete a registration form and return it no later than Thursday, November 9, 2017. Don’t delay; mail your registration or register online today. Registration is lim-ited to 600 people. A waiting list will be maintained after that number is reached. If you need to cancel, please do so as early as possible so someone else may attend. Because our registration fees are low, no refunds will be made for cancella-tions.

CHILDCARE:

Childcare will be available at the conference site; however, space is limited to 60 children. A waiting list will be main-tained once the maximum number of 60 is reached. There will be a $15.00 per child charge for the day. We cannot provide childcare for children who require total one-on-one attention.

If you need to cancel childcare, please do so as early as pos-sible so another child may have your placement.

No lunch or snacks will be provided, so pack and clearly la-bel your child’s food. Juice and water will be provided. Do not include peanut butter or other nut products in your child’s lunch due to food allergies of some of the children attending. David Egan

“MY STORY: IMAGINE THE PossABILITIES”

David Egan is an eager advocate for people with intellectual disabilities at the local, national, and international

levels. He has always dreamed big. Even at the age of eight, he dreamed of winning his races as a swimmer in

Special Olympics. As he grew, he sought larger goals: having a job and finding ways to advocate and change

attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities. He is living his dream and inspiring others to live theirs.

Mr. Egan is a J. P. Kennedy, Jr., Public Policy Fellow, the first person with an intellectual disability to be

selected to this position, serving for a year working with the Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee on

Capitol Hill and then with the National Down Syndrome Society. He currently serves as a board member for the

Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia and the Arc of Northern Virginia. A Booz-Allen Hamilton

staff employee in the distribution center since 1998 at the McLean, Virginia, campus, he is a trailblazer in the

competitive employment of people with intellectual disabilities. Mr. Egan has received numerous awards

including the Hero’s Award from the Virginia Special Olympics in 2002, a Voices Award in 2003 from the

National Down Syndrome Society, and, in 2006, was the first recipient of the NDSS Dan Piper Award. In 2013,

he was the NDSS Self-Advocate of the Year. Join David Egan as he discusses his life, advocacy, and more. His

keynote address will feature a short film and time for questions from the audience.

2. The New Autism Umbrella (ALL)

Dr. Joni Johnson If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, sensory integration disorder, auditory processing disorder, or anxiety, and none of the treatments are working, what is going on? This work-shop will discuss the new autism umbrella and how many common childhood challenges can equal autism when they all present together and change the treatment strategies once autism has been identified. Join Dr. Joni Johnson as she showers you with information! Dr. Johnson is the founder of Pediatric Partners for Attention and Learning in Stafford and Great Falls, VA. A product of the United States Military Academy and the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, she has spent her career caring for military families and others. Through her multi-disciplinary clinic and athletic program, Dr. Johnson hopes to forever change the way we diagnose, treat, and encourage individuals with ADHD, autism, and learning differences.

3. Fundamentals of ABCs: Antecedents, Behaviors, Conse-quences (ALL)

Chris Everhart With a master’s degree in mental health/community counsel-ing, Chris Everhart has over 10 years’ experience with au-tism spectrum disorders and oppositional defiance disorder, working in a private day school treatment, early intervention ABA clinic and mental health setting, and home/community-

based ABA and mental health services. His presentation will provide an introduction to the concepts of antecedents, be-haviors, and their consequences. A brief introduction to function of behavior will be followed by key concepts in reinforcement strategies. Practical applications of these con-cepts with individuals diagnosed with mental health disor-ders will be discussed.

4. ABLE: A New Financial Tool for People with Disabilities (ALL)

Sara Weir, MS In this session, Sara Weir will discuss the development of the ABLE Act, how it has increased economic opportunities, the benefits of its passage, and what still needs improvement. She will also provide an update on ABLE 2.0, detailing and explaining the legislative proposals that will improve it. Sara Hart Weir is the president of the National Down Syndrome Society. As its president, Ms. Weir oversees the mission, vision, and administration of NDSS, a leading human rights group for all persons with Down syndrome and their fami-lies. Her philosophy to effective advocacy is to “beat the table.” She does so each day to ensure that those with Down syndrome earn and are represented at the very table where crucial decisions are made, whether it is at the White House, in the halls of Congress, or at the United Nations.

5. Solution-Focused Parenting: Raising Happy, Healthy, and Successful Kids (ALL)

Dr. Christopher Haley Dr. Christopher Haley is a clinical psychologist and owner of both the Social Skills Center and Psychological and Life Skills Associates. With nearly 25 years’ experience in indi-vidual and family therapy, he facilitates over ten social skills groups each week. He is an author, speaker, and proud fa-ther of four children. This dynamic and interactive work-shop will present participants with solution-focused parent-ing strategies on such topics as rewards and punishments, dealing with screen time, academic pressures and grades, extracurricular activities, social skills, and more. SESSION I, continued 6. Executive Functioning Skills: What They Are and Why They’re Important (ALL)

Erin Clemens, OTR/L, BCP, CIMI & Joy Burkley, OTR/L, OTD

Executive functions are the higher level cognitive skills that ena-ble a person to be independent and functional throughout life, including such components as organization, time management, and self-monitoring. This workshop will discuss the components of executive functions, their practicality to everyday life, and strategies to improve those areas in which there are deficits. The owner of Pediatric Achievements in Woodbridge, VA, and the president of the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association, Erin Clemens has practiced pediatric occupational therapy for 16 years. She is one of only three AOTA board-certified pediatric occupational therapists in Virginia. With a doctorate in occupa-tional therapy and an advanced certificate in autism, Joy Burkley has worked with children who have executive function deficits for the last 9 years.

7. Say What? I Don’t Have to Talk to Say Something (ALL)

Stacey Collazo Stacey Collazo is currently a teacher of students with severe in-tellectual disabilities at Leesylvania Elementary School in Wood-bridge, VA. She has worked in the field of special education for 25 years with a focus on communication and multi-modal in-struction. The mother of three children, Ms. Collazo’s youngest was diagnosed on the autism spectrum in 2013. Meaningful inter-actions happen every second of every minute of every hour of every day. Too often, individuals who do not communicate in the “typical” way have opinions and information to share that is overlooked. This presentation will offer an enlightened way to view true communication and how to pick up on cues given to us from others who choose to communicate using various modes with which we may be unfamiliar until now.

8. Virginia’s Medicaid Waivers (ALL)

Rose Sutton This session will discuss what waivers are, who qualifies, how the waiver works, duties and qualifications of an attendant, how waivers can help, and the agencies involved. Rose Sutton is a regional manager for Moms in Motion/At Home Your Way and a LEAP trainer for adults with disabilities at VCU. With degrees in special education and autism and the mother of children with special needs, Ms. Sutton has been a teacher and advocate for her family and others. She believes that none of us can know every-thing so that it is the sharing of information that is empowering. She joins us today as both a professional and a mother who shares your concerns.

9. By Dads, For Dads, About Dads (ALL)

Tony Geisler, John Maher, Michael Thorpe, & Michael Toobin

Fathering a child with an intellectual or developmental disability can be demanding and frustrating. It can be stressful on your

marriage and other relationships, as well as on yourself. Come talk with other dads who have faced this challenge for a number of years and exchange opinions on how to better meet the needs of your child and your family. Tony Geisler has been involved with individuals with developmental disabilities since his daugh-ter received her first diagnosis in 1995. He currently serves as President of the Governing Board for The Arc of Greater Prince William. John Maher is the father of a 37 year-old son with both an intellectual disability and autism. John has served as district member and chairman of the Prince William Country Public Schools Special Education Advisory Committee. Michael Thorpe is Program Office Manager for the Office of Loan Guarantee, Office of Native American Programs, HUD. He is the father of a 20 year-old son who has Down syndrome and coaches soccer, basketball, and tennis for Special Olympics. Michael Toobin is the father of a son with disabilities and an attorney whose prac-tice emphasizes working with families with special needs mem-bers.

10. An Overview of DARS (Department for Aging and Rehabili-tative Services) (HS, AD)

LaPearl Smith This presentation will explain transition services, coordination, and overall information about the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS). Participants will receive an overview of types of assessments, career services, vocational or job training, job placement assistance, and job coaching services. Independent living skills and assistive technology services will be briefly discussed. LaPearl Smith is currently the Business Devel-opment Manager for the Northern Virginia and Rappahannock districts of the Virginia Division of Rehabilitative Services (DARS) which includes Manassas-Prince William County. She has presented to government agencies and private sector compa-nies on disability awareness and etiquette. She is the DARS rep-resentative to the business solutions team for northern Virginia.

11. Humor: Prescription for Healing and Self-Care (ALL)

Maureen Deutermann, MSN, RN In this upbeat, interactive session, participants will review stress, stressors, and both healthy and unhealthy ways to cope with stress. The importance of perception in stress management and the intentional use of humor will be discussed. Maureen Deuter-mann is Manager of Leadership and Organizational Development at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. She is certified in stress management training, Myers Brigg Type Indicator, Frank-lin Covey, and the EQi 2.0 (Emotional Intelligence) assessment tool. Prior to joining the Sentara Leadership Institute team, she held positions that gave her extensive experience in both manage-ment and training in a variety of healthcare organizations.

SESSION I, continued 12. Think College! Postsecondary Educational Opportunities for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MS, HS, AD, SA)

Dana Yarbrough Dana Yarbrough is a community support specialist for the Partner-ship for People with Disabilities located at Virginia Common-wealth University. Among her many roles at VCU, Dana directs the Center for Family Involvement and its initiatives to support diverse families of children/young adults with developmental disa-bilities to become effective advocates. She is also the mother of a 23 year-old daughter who, despite significant disabilities, owns her own dog-boarding business with 27 four-legged clients. Ms. Yarbrough holds masters’ degrees in non-profit leadership and special education secondary transition. Many believe that college is only for those with high SAT scores and a standard diploma. However, there are now over 200 programs across the country for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At-tendees will learn about program models, which colleges/universities in Virginia offer a comprehensive training program, how to plan for college, and how to pay for it.

13. Hire Autism (HS, AD, SA)

Diane Lingenfelter This workshop will begin with an overview of the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) including its mission areas, program initiatives, and resources. Employment challenges for those with autism and companies that are making strides to improve employ-ment outcomes will be discussed. The majority of the workshop will be a discussion of Hire Autism (mission, goals), how to use the website, current status, success stories, and a call to action. Diane Lingenfelter is on a mission to help people with autism find meaningful work. A former special educator in Iowa and Virgin-ia, Ms. Lingenfelter manages Hire Autism, an employment initia-tive sponsored by OAR, now in its testing phase in northern Vir-ginia. Once the testing phase is complete, she will lead the nation-al expansion of the program.

14. Spelling to Communicate (ES, MS, HS, AD)

Elizabeth Vosseller, MA, CCC-SLP Elizabeth Vosseller is the director of Growing Kids Therapy Cen-ter (GKTC) in Herndon, VA. Ms. Vosseller and the staff at GKTC teach nonspeaking, minimally, and unreliably speaking individuals the purposeful motor skills to spell to communicate. This method has been successfully used with clients of various disabilities, including Down syndrome and autism, and ages 4 to 40+ locally, nationally, and internationally. In this presentation, Ms. Vosseller will explain the neurological basis that supports Spelling to Communicate and provide an overview of how stu-dents progress from letter boards to keyboards to communicate increasingly complex information. She will be accompanied by some of GKTC’s nonspeaking clients who will share their journey from silence to communication.

15. Navigating the Criminal Justice System with an Individual with Diverse Needs (MS, HS, AD)

LaChondra Everett In this workshop, LaChondra Everett will discuss statistics related to individuals with diverse needs in the criminal justice system and ways in which the criminal justice system is beginning to acknowledge individuals with diverse needs. She will also discuss what an interaction with the criminal justice system looks like from the initial 911 call to post-sentencing and means by which family members can successfully collaborate with members of the criminal justice system to advocate for their child. Ms. Everett is a Licensed Professional Counselor who worked with law enforce-ment for over seven years to conduct emergency mental health evaluations and over three years within the criminal justice system delivering services and supervising mental health services to those detained in detention center or jail. She is currently the supervisor of Prince William Community Services’ youth case management and home-based services.

16. Is your Child a Target of Bullying? (ES, MS, HS)

Lizzett Uria Lizzett Uria is a bilingual information specialist at the Parent Edu-cational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC). The Latino Out-reach Program at PEATC provides information, resources, train-ing, and workshops to parents of children with special needs in Virginia, helping the parents become advocates for their children. This workshop offers intervention strategies for the parents of children with disabilities who may be the target of bullying at school. Participants will learn how to identify types of bullying, develop strategies to prevent it, identify responses and speak with their child about bullying, obtain help from professionals, and learn about disability harassment laws.

17. Moms Supporting Moms (ALL)

Rose Ann Stern, Heidi Thorpe, & Heather Trammell Join a panel of experienced moms with positive approaches to viewing, managing, and parenting children with developmental and intellectual disabilities of all age groups. Rose Ann Stern is the parent of 4 who has years of experience navigating the special needs experience at home (developmental/autism and mental/emotional), school (PWCS Special Education Advisory Commit-tee), and the community (Circle of Support committee member, Special Olympics). Heidi Thorpe is mom to 2, one of whom is a 20 year-old with Down syndrome homeschooled for 1st through 8th grades. She is a Circle of Support Conference committee member and was previously the librarian for the Down Syndrome Associa-tion of Northern Virginia. Heather Trammell is the proud parent of two, a 15 year-old with Down syndrome and a 12 year-old with autism. She has been the director of parent support for the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia since 2003.

Rhonda Satterthwaite, MS, CCC-SLP, and Maxim Valiente, MOTR/L

Rhonda Satterthwaite and Maxim Valiente are therapists at Helping Hands, Inc. in Stafford, VA. For over a year, they have collaborated on a number of clients with regards to their indi-vidual feeding needs. Ms. Satterthwaite is trained in The S.O.S. Feeding Approach. This workshop will demonstrate how to support your child at home to prepare for meals and be success-ful when trying new foods. It will provide perspectives from both an occupational therapist and a speech therapist on suc-cessful feeding.

19. Developments in Special Education Law (ES, MS, HS, SA)

Cheri Belkowitz & Harold Belkowitz This session will discuss recent developments affecting the rights of students with disabilities in the public school system, including two important 2017 decisions from the United States Supreme Court. Cheri and Harold Belkowitz are attorneys with Belkowitz Law, PLLC, in Fairfax, VA. They are zealous advo-cates for children and their families in all school-related matters including special education, disciplinary actions, bullying cases, restraint and seclusion, and transitioning out of public school. They are active in community organizations as well. Ms. Belkowitz is the chair of the Fairfax County Public Schools

Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities and a board member of the Arc of Northern Virginia. Mr. Belkowitz is a commissioner on the Fairfax County Consumer Protection Commission and serves on the Board of Directors for the Jew-ish Community Center of Northern Virginia. They are both graduates of Brandeis University and Syracuse University School of Law.

20. Depression: What It Looks Like, Where It Comes From, and How You Can Help (ES, MS, HS, AD)

Tiffany Swink Tiffany Swink is a Licensed Professional Counselor, practicing in the field for 12 years. She provides clinical supervision to residents working toward their LPC and provides outpatient services to both children and young adults. Tiffany’s profes-sional passions include the role of the brain in mental health symptoms, whole health, mindfulness, expressive therapies, and cognitive behavior therapy practices as she works to prevent the growth of depression and anxiety symptoms. Joy Ocetnik & Rashawn Webster Joy Ocetnik has been with The Arc of Greater Prince William for nearly 23 years, currently serving as the Recreation Director/Training Coordinator. This mother of four and the recipient of a degree in Physical Education/Recreation is joined by her Recrea-tion Assistant Rashawn Webster who has been with The Arc for over 6 years. Mr. Webster also provides administrative support for The Arc’s family support program, including this conference. He was the recent recipient of the Labor of Love Award present-ed by the Coalition for Human Services. Have you ever asked yourself what do I say, what do I wear, or what do I do on a date? Ms. Ocetnik and Mr. Webster will give you 5 steps to help make a date successful. There will be actual practice of going on a date. Tips for finding a date will be given as well. Even if just attending with a friend, this experience will be lots of fun. 22. Autism and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ES, MS, HS, AD)

Chris Everhart This presentation will provide a brief overview/understanding of a mental health diagnosis. This will include why we provide/seek a diagnosis for treatment, billing, and accessing services. Specif-ic information for the diagnostic criteria of autism and opposi-tional defiance disorder will be reviewed to conclude with a dis-cussion/Q&A specific to family members or providers on this topic. Chris Everhart has a master's degree in Mental Health/Community Counseling with over 10 years’ experience working with autism spectrum disorders as well as oppositional defiance disorder. He has worked in a variety of environments including private day school treatment, early intervention ABA clinical setting, early intervention mental health setting, residential care facility, therapeutic boarding school, and home/community based ABA and mental health services. 23. Parental Rights and Dispute Resolution in Special Education (ES, MS, HS)

Henry Millward, Jr. Henry “Hank” Millward is employed with the Virginia Depart-ment of Education (VDOE) as the Director of the Office of Spe-cialized Education Facilities and Family Engagement. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Associate Director for the Of-fice of Dispute Resolution and Administrative Services. Mr. Millward has a depth of experience working with students with behavioral concerns, having worked within the juvenile correc-tion and private day school settings. This workshop will focus on the basic parental rights of parents who have children with disabilities. Emphasis will be placed on what federal and state special education regulations require of school divisions and how parents can ensure they have an opportunity to exercise their rights. There will also be discussion on resolving disputes that arise, beginning with working collaboratively and continuing through the more formal dispute resolution options of mediation, state complaints, and due process hearings. Ample time will be allotted for questions.

24. Traveling with Special Needs: Beyond Visiting the Grandparents (ALL)

Jamie Scheff This interactive session will discuss the challenges of travel plan-ning in general and the additional challenges of planning for spe-cial needs. Jamie Scheff will walk through the Seven Steps to Sanity in travel planning, from selecting the experience to return-ing home and reflection. Participants will walk away with a bet-ter understanding of how travel can be possible for all families. Free follow-up consultations will be available. As the parent of a child with special needs, Jamie Scheff spent much time planning trips, determined to provide the family with a wide range of ex-periences. After many years of doing this, she left her corporate job to work in travel full time. Thus, Trippin’ with Jamie, her travel company, was born in 2014. Her goal is to help other fami-lies benefit from her experience and open up the world to them. 25. Managing the Angry Child (P, ES, MS)

Sonia Hinds Sonia Hinds has a master’s degree in mental health nursing and is a registered play therapist. She is the founder and director of Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars and Barstow Acres Children’s Center in southern Maryland. Her workshop will begin with the dynamics of anger and how it is manifested in young children, elementary-aged children, and middle school children. Specific techniques to coach and teach children will be discussed and demonstrated. This workshop is appropriate for both parents and professionals. 26. Futures Planning: An Overview (ALL)

Tia Marsili Futures planning is planning in advance of your death for the future of your child - no matter the age - with disabilities so he/she may live as independent and fruitful a life as possible when you are gone. Simultaneously, your own future and retirement need to be considered. Tia Marsili, Director of Trusts at the Arc of Northern Virginia, will provide an overview of these issues. Lucy Cantrell Lucy Cantrell is the Director of Information and Referral for the Arc of Virginia. Working for four decades with individuals with disabilities and their families, Ms. Cantrell began her career as an elementary school teacher of special education students. She served as the Executive Director of the Arc of Hanover for fif-teen years. As a Medicaid waiver mentor, Ms. Cantrell has trained hundreds of individuals and their families so they have the knowledge and tools to access private and public resources. Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plus (CCC Plus) is Virginia’s new waiver and managed care program. Additionally, the EDCD and Tech Assisted Waivers were combined effective July 2017 into one singular waiver with expanded services. Covered will be CCC Plus eligibility requirements, the screening process, services provided, and the managed care program. 30. Tracy Lee Tracy Lee is the Family Engagement Specialist/Special Projects Coordinator at the Virginia Department of Education. She pro-vides leadership and technical assistance to Parent Resource Centers throughout the state and trains both parents and school divisions in parental rights, dispute resolution, best practices in collaboration through the special education process, and behav-ioral issues. A former elementary school teacher, preschool di-rector, and Family Resource Coordinator for Colonial Heights Public Schools, Ms. Lee co-authored 1-2-3 Magic for Kids and the 1-2-3 Magic Workbook. This workshop will include infor-mation on helping your child with organization and time man-agement, addressing homework struggles for parents and chil-dren, and specific strategies for a variety of homework issues. 32. Kim Lemaster Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Kim Lemaster is the Administra-tive Coordinator for the program for students with hearing impair-ments for Prince William County Public Schools. She began learning American Sign Language at an early age in order to com-municate with her brother, who is deaf, and has been a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing in both center-based classrooms and itinerant settings. In her presentation, Ms. Lemaster will give an introduction to American Sign Language that will include the alphabet, numbers, signs for family members, colors, and basic vocabulary. Aspects of deaf culture will also be discussed. 35. Can Vision Therapy Help My Child? (ALL)

Dr. Tod Davis, OD, FCOVD Vision is our most important sense. It directly impacts problem-solving, movement, emotional well-being, personal relationships, and other aspects of daily living. In spite of neuroscientific ad-vances in our understanding of vision, especially identifying and treating vision problems, it continues to be poorly understood by educators, clinicians, and the general public. In fact most schools and clinicians continue to assess vision only with the 20/20 chart. Come learn in a lively and fun format how vision impacts atten-tion and learning, and how vision problems can be addressed. Dr. Tod R. Davis is a developmental optometrist, board-certified in vison therapy. The challenge for parents and educators is determining how to incor-porate opportunities for movement while still accomplishing cur-riculum goals. This session will explore the unique benefits of exercise in general and yoga in particular. Kelly Henderson, Ph.D. A special educator by profession, Kelly Henderson is a former public school teacher (emotional/behavioral disorders) and an adjunct professor of special education at George Mason Universi-ty. Her family, formed in part through foster care and adoption, has children with a range of learning, behavioral, and cognitive disabilities for which they received early intervention, special education, and related services. She is the Executive Director of Formed Families Forward, a non-profit organization that trains and supports foster, adoptive, and kinship families. Children and youth who have experienced short-term or chronic traumas are likely to experience significant educational, mental health, and social challenges. Unchecked, traumatic stressors can contribute to poor health, social, and academic outcomes. Dr. Henderson will review the signs and symptoms of trauma and share trauma-informed approaches to support. Participants will gain practical strategies for building resiliency in children, youth, and families.

Jessica Machado Students with autism face many obstacles that impact not only the transition to college but also the ability to achieve the highest quality of life on campus. This presentation will touch on steps that students can take in high school to prepare for postsecondary educational opportunities and provide a review of services that colleges are making available to support them. Jessica Machado, a nationally-certified and licensed school psychologist, has worked with children, adolescents, and young adults since 2010. In public schools, Ms. Machado has conducted psycho-educational evaluations, developed individual strategies to facili-tate student success, participated on multi-disciplinary teams, provided individual and group counseling, chaired meetings to determine eligibility for special education services or accommo-dation under a 504 plan, and advocated for students. A PEERS-certified provider, she also works in the disability services office at George Mason University leading support services for young

adults with autism in transition, social skills, independent living, self-advocacy, and executive functioning. 40. Where’s My Voice? Funding your Child’s Communication Device (ALL)

Teresa Dubovsky, MEd, CCC-SLP Teresa Dubovsky has been a practicing speech-language pathologist since 1999, having worked in pediatric rehabilitation and public school settings. While working in the schools, she conducted assistive technology assessments and training. With degrees in management science, speech-language pathology, and assistive technology, Ms. Dubovsky is a regional consultant with Assistive Technology Works, Inc., providing AAC consultation and support in VA, DC, and WV. David Hamrick is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service and an individual with autism who presents regularly at workshops and conferences. Since 1999, he has been providing parents, educators, professionals, and others with autism infor-mation and best practices for what works best in school, work, relationship, and interpersonal settings. His wife Lindsey is also actively engaged with the autism community. In this workshop, Mr. Hamrick will give participants an idea of what living with autism is like and what does/doesn’t work for people on the spec-trum. Topics such as special education, transitions, special inter-ests, pet peeves, and accommodations will be covered as well as coping strategies for challenging behaviors. This session is high-ly recommended for parents of children newly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and for autism self-advocates. 42. Super Powers Activate! Embracing ADHD and Autism (ALL)

Cheryl Johnson, MSW, & Loretta Morris Williams This workshop will provide a general overview of legal authority as it pertains to the role of a guardian or conservator, while re-viewing alternatives and legal definitions from least restrictive to full representation. Included will be the steps to become a guard-ian/conservator, necessary qualifications, roles, activities, report-ing requirements, stand-by guardian, and scenarios. Dee Bogetti & Debbie Stachkunas Dee Bogetti doesn’t train service dogs: she teaches families and individuals how to train their own service dogs. The wait time for a fully trained service dog can be years so she offers this service as an alternative to the traditional approach. Like any service dog program, it doesn’t work 100% of the time, but when it does, it’s magic! She will present the pros and cons of owner training from a trainer’s perspective and address the most common misconcep-tions in the service dog community. 48. Cooking Across the Curriculum (ALL) Stacey Collazo

Stacey Collazo is an intellectual disabilities teacher (severe) for Prince William County Public Schools and has been teaching for 25 years. She began her teaching career in Pittsburgh, PA in the area of general education but left after 2 years to work in the field of special education at The Children's Institute of Pittsburgh. She moved to Virginia in 1997, teaching special education from then until the present time. Ms. Collazo is the mother of three chil-dren, the youngest of whom has autism. Students in the intellectu-al disabilities (severe) program at Leesylvania ES are provided with opportunities to address various curricular areas through cooking. Cooking is an activity that is meaningful and fun: learn-ing is embedded throughout each step in the process - from count-ing the number of ingredients, reading a recipe, and discussing chemical/physical changes to asking for a turn (with word approx-imations, vocalizations, gestures, sign language, or switches), waiting for a turn, and using motor skills to mix/stir ingredients. The skills learned through cooking generalize to other important areas of development. 49. ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis): Modifying the Environ-ment to Foster Progress (ALL)

51. Navigating the World of Special Needs Legal & Financial Planning (ALL)

Mark Friese, Chase Phillips, & Michael Toobin Since joining Merrill Lynch in 1987, Mark Friese has helped many families implement multigenerational wealth management strate-gies. Mr. Friese is a member of the Merrill Lynch Special Needs Council, which helps families assess and address the financial chal-lenges of caring for a family member with disabilities, understand-ing these challenges first hand since he has a son with autism. Chase Phillips, also with Merrill Lynch, specializes in developing and implementing advanced financial strategies for families, busi-nesses, and individuals, including those with long-term disabilities, including special needs trusts, guardianships, charitable trusts, and more. A member of the 2005 and 2006 U. S. national rowing team, Mr. Phillips also volunteers at Children’s National Medical Center as co-chairman of the Volunteer Advisory Board and is an active member of the Dreams for Kids advisory board. Michael Toobin’s law practice focuses on special needs estate planning. He is a mem-ber of the Academy of Special Needs Planners, the board of direc-tors of the disability Law Center of Virginia (formerly the Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy), the Fairfax County Long Term Care Coordinating Council, and a former member of the board of the Arc of Northern Virginia. This session will cover the numerous government benefits available to families with special needs, as well as review the legal aspects of setting up a Special Needs Trust ver-sus other options. Learn how to apply for benefits, when to apply, and how to reach a successful outcome for your family. Other topics to be addressed include finding the most cost effective funding tech-niques for Special Needs Trusts; determining future financial needs and providing adequate resources; putting together a team to coordi-nate services for your child; and establishing a roadmap for future medical, legal, and related services for your family member with special needs. 52. Dyslexia for a Day: A Simulation (P, ES, MS, HS, AD, SA)

Elin Paier, MA Elin Paier has two sons with dyslexia. She is a parent advocate for Decoding Dyslexia-Virginia, a nationwide grassroots movement of parents striving to improve the lives of those with dyslexia. They aim to link families to resources, support, and educational interven-tions for dyslexia. In addition, they work to raise dyslexia aware-ness, empower families to support their children and inform policy-makers on best practices to identify, remediate, and support students with dyslexia in Virginia. Ms. Paier has a master’s degree in Health Psychology Education. Are you the parent or educator of a child with dyslexia? Have you found yourself wondering what individuals with dyslexia experience during the reading or writing process? This highly rated simulation provides similar frustrations and feelings through targeted reading and writing tasks to help participants gain a better understanding of and empathy for those children and adults who struggle with dyslexia. If you are interested in learning more about dyslexia and what those with dyslexia often experience with reading, writing, and processing, attend this workshop! 53. American Sign Language Basics (ALL)

Kim Lemaster Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Kim Lemaster is the Administrative Coordinator for the program for students with hearing impairments

for Prince William County Public Schools. She began learning American Sign Language at an early age in order to communicate with her brother, who is deaf, and has been a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing in both center-based classrooms and itinerant settings. In her presentation, Ms. Lemaster will give an introduction to American Sign Language that will include the alphabet, numbers, signs for family members, colors, and basic vocabulary. Aspects of deaf culture will also be discussed. 54. The Perfect Storm: Awareness, Answers, and Action Steps for Autism, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Disorder (ALL)

Dr. Scott Stachelek, D.C. Does your child struggle with autism spectrum and sensory-related issues? Have you tried multiple therapies and perhaps even multiple medications? If you answered yes, then you need to attend this presentation that will take you through each of the most common “ingredients” that constitute these issues and identify the key ingre-dients of the “Perfect Storm” recipe. Once you know the ingredi-ents for ASD, ADHD, and sensory processing, you can choose the best path for your child. Awareness, answers, and action steps for your child’s health and happiness are the primary goals of this event. Founder of Core Chiropractic in Prince William County, Dr. Scott Stachelek is a family and pediatric chiropractor specializing in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, ADHD, sensory inte-gration disorder, seizures, and more. He received the Family Prac-tice Chiropractor of the Year and the Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year; he is also an alumnus of Leadership Prince William. 55. Who Let the Dogs Out? (ALL)

Brooke Yarbrough Brooke Yarbrough, a 2012 graduate of Varina High School, is a true GRITS (girl raised in the south) who loves fried chicken and sweet tea. Despite significant disabilities, Ms. Yarbrough, with the sup-port of her family, opened Brooke’s Happy Tails Dog Boarding that now serves 27 four-legged clients. She has spoken about her transi-tion journey to over 1,500 people in 4 states and is excited to share her story today. She will share her journey and what it took to tran-sition from high school to small business ownership. 56. 57. Adaptive Skills for Special Needs Students Transitioning to College (HS)

Dr. Sajjad Khan Dr. Sajjad Khan is an experienced clinician and researcher who treats behavioral aspects of autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and mood disorders. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Autism Society of Northern Virginia and chairs an advisory committee for Fairfax County Schools. Recent data suggests that a large proportion of special needs students transitioning to college are under-prepared for the numerous challenges that accompany the first-year experience. This workshop will provide educators, families, and students with background information on common challenges that face students with disabilities. Discussions of neu-rodevelopmental conditions, mood disorders, and core symptoms will be explained from the perspective of neurobiological function and how these symptoms interfere with optimal learning. Further-more, a discussion of reasonable accommodations and the Ameri-cans with Disabilities Act will provide foundational understanding of what is available to students with disabilities as they transition to college. Interventions, including executive function training, self-regulation, and social skills coaching have been developed within a program called the Adaptive College Experience (ACE) to assist students learn the adaptive skills necessary for a successful and sustained transition to college. Components of evidence-based treatments, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Applied Be-havior Analysis (ABA), are utilized in the ACE program conceptu-al model. 58. Occupational Therapy, Reflex Integration, and Rhythmic Movement Training™ (I, P, ES, MS, HS)

Sydney McDonald & Makensie McDonald This session will help participants to understand reflex integration, sensory integration, and Rhythmic Movement Training™ and how they may impact you on a daily basis. There will be an explanation of strategies that will aid in overall brain growth and regulation,

allowing for success at home, at school, and in the community. Rhythmic Movement Training™ is a movement-based program using gentle passive and active movements. These movements replicate the spontaneous, rhythmic movements babies make dur-ing the first year of life which are essential for the maturing and “linking up” of their brain and nervous system. In normal develop-ment, these natural, spontaneous movements help create new neu-ral pathways necessary for brain development. In addition, these movements integrate the primitive and postural reflexes into an infant’s whole body system in order for the young child to develop and mature physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Sydney McDonald has worked as an OT for 27 years serving pediatrics to adults in a variety of settings. For the last 7 years, she has worked in a progressive clinic implementing holistic and alternative meth-ods into a plan of care. The recipient of the VOTA centennial scholarship recipient, Makensie McDonald is a doctoral student in OT at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Vir-ginia, from which she also received a scholarship, and is an AOTA student intern. 59. Making New Friends in Adulthood (HS, AD, SA)

Joy Ocetnik & Rashawn Webster Joy Ocetnik has been with The Arc of Greater Prince William for nearly 23 years, currently serving as the Recreation Director/Training Coordinator. This mother of four and the recipient of a degree in Physical Education/Recreation is joined by her Recrea-tion Assistant Rashawn Webster who has been with The Arc for over 6 years. Mr. Webster also provides administrative support for The Arc’s family support program, including this conference. He was the recent recipient of the Labor of Love Award presented by the Coalition for Human Services. Making a new friend or keeping up with old ones can be challenging with busy schedules and tech-nology. Come join us as we discuss some ways to break down barriers, not only in face-to-face communication, but also in the world of social media.
