  • Dale L. Johnson, PhD, received his BA in psychology from the Universityof North Dakota in 1951 and went on to the University of Kansas to receivehis doctoral degree in clinical and developmental psychology in 1957. After 7years as a staff psychologist and director of small-group research at the Hous-ton VA hospital, he began his academic career at the University of Houston in1964. He was chairman of the Department from 19661972 and a professor ofpsychology from 19692005. He is now Professor Emeritus. From 1976 to2000, he was also an adjunct professor of psychology at the School of PublicHealth, University of Texas. He continues to conduct developmental researchas clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of TexasMedical Branch in Galveston, an appointment he has held since 1996. In addi-tion to his academic appointments, Dr. Johnson has been Director of the Hous-ton ParentChild Research Center and has acted as a consultant to Head Start,The World Health Organization, and mental health programs in nine statesand six countries. He is a former president of the National Alliance of theMentally Ill (NAMI) and of the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Al-lied Disorders. He is the author or coauthor of eight books, 140 peer-reviewedjournal articles, over 200 conference presentations, and has received more than30 research grants. He wrote the first practice manual in psychology. He is afellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psycho-logical Society. Dr. Johnson is a member of Sigma Xi and the recipient of aFulbright Award to Bergen, Norway (1973), and another to Istanbul Univer-sity, Turkey (1974). He was elected to Whos Who Among University Students(1950). He has won the Mental Health Association Researcher of the YearAward (1987); APA Exemplary Program Award (1987); NAMI Logan Awardfor Outstanding Psychologist; APAs Hildreth Award for Public Service(2000); Exemplary Prevention Award, Center for Substance Abuse (2002);City of Houston Award for Public Service (1993); a Greenwood Award forDistinguished Faculty at the University of Houston (1993); and was appointedto the National Advisory Mental Health Council (NIMH), 19971999. He hasdone research with the following Native American groups: Mazahua (1954);Navajo (19891991); Zuni (19891991); Dakota Sioux (1965); Maya-Quiche(1967); and Quinault, Quilleute, and Makah (1968).
