St. George Parish Prays Together from Home Every Friday

May 3, 2020: Fourth Sunday of Easter

From Your Pastor On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, it is important for us to listen to Christ in a world where so many voices try to compete with his. Being able to listen to him requires prayerful effort, patient endurance and courageous discipleship. We can be easily be enticed away by the various voices that tell us that we must have one thing or another as well as the constant ring from cell phones or the other voices that can call out to us in different addictions and self-serving life deci-sions. In these extraordinary times we can be so easily tempted to pursue such options. During this Easter season, especially, we need to re-commit ourselves to listen more closely and carefully to Christ. He is the one and only gate who can eventually lead us to a more abundant life! Fr.Niccolls During the Month of May

Consider saying an extra “Hail Mary” each day or Pray the Rosary

A PRAYER IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

O God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation,

hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters

and deliver us from this time of trial. Open our ears and our hearts

to the voice of your Son: “Be not afraid, for I am with you always.”

Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants;

give us the wisdom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again

to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress

and confident in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Faith is Caught

We have heard it said by some that we should let our youth follow and believe in what they came to know and find acceptable. We say it is their choice.

The problem with this kind of thinking is that they may not come to know or discuss or appreciate what faith is about. You as parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles become more distant as our youth become more independent and busier.

It is good that our youth in their early and growing years see that we believe, that we know about Jesus’ life, the good news that he brought and that it all means a great deal to us. It is important that we don’t put it off or keep it a secret, but believe it and live it. It does not mean we are forcing it on them but rather let-ting them know and see our faith and the strength, mean-ing, and peace and joy it brings us. Our faith is a great source of serenity, direction and strength. We follow different teams in sports, we believe in study and hard work, and the values and ideals of our American way of life. They catch that from us. Don’t wait until they are older, when they are very busy and likely set on their own way of life.

Remember ‘faith is not taught it is caught’. It is a source of peace, healing, empowerment, and a wonderful hope in dark days. They catch it from us.

When we truly live our faith, it becomes a light, a direction, a focus that does not take away from life but significantly adds to it. As someone once said, it becomes “the wind beneath our wings.“

Let us stay close to the Lord and the ways he gave us by attending Mass, receiving him in the sacraments and let-ting our homes become places of love, prayer and good works.

“Faith is not taught it is caught”

Offertory Alternatives During this time, as we await the day when our parish may open its doors again, we continue to pray for those affected by the virus, the healthcare workers, and all whose livelihood is disrupted. Our parish will be ready to welcome it’s vibrant community ‘home’ as soon as it’s feasible and safe. Our buildings must be maintained and no one could predict this extraordinary event. As you are able, our offertory donations can be delivered in several ways. Online giving is an easy and safe method – simply go to our parish website at www.saintgeorgesparish.org and follow the icons for Online Giving. You may now make your donations weekly or monthly. If you need assistance with online giving, please contact Kathy Hessel at [email protected] Alternatively, should you wish to drop your envelopes at the rectory, the mail box on the front porch is avail-able and checked regularly. Finally, some parishion-ers send their donations through the regular mail. Please know that we are sensitive to the households already impacted by this temporary loss of employ-ment. Thank you for your support of our parish. If you or anyone in your family is in need of assistance, please contact our Pastoral Outreach Coordinator, Annie Doyle, at 508-450-4134.

Jesus says, “ I came that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Good stewards are grateful for the gift of life and joyfully share their abundance with others.

Legacy of Hope

Campaign Update

Last month our parish goal

was revised to $400,000 which we and the Diocese be-lieve is attainable.

With just one week remaining in our Legacy of Hope

effort, we are now at $380,000 or 95% of our goal! We appreciate the generous support provided to date by 180 families in our parish.

If you have yet to participate in the Campaign, please help us attain our goal by making a gift or multi-year pledge on-line using the Diocese’s secure website:

legacyofhope.worcesterdiocese.org Remember, St. George will receive 40% of the funds we raise for the Campaign. Thank you!

Prayers for the Sick

Please, especially during these troubling times, call our parish office to let us know if a family member, friend or neighbor is hospitalized, homebound or ill. Since we can’t always be together these days, you can help us to hold one another close in prayer.

Due to HIPAA regulations, unless you allow the hos-pital or health care institution to release information and list St. George’s as your religious affiliation, we are not told that you are a patient. Thank you for your understanding.

Pieta

Pieta is an ongoing support group for bereaved parents. Anyone who has experienced the death of a child is welcome to attend.

The May 4th Pieta Bereavement Mass has been rescheduled to September 28th, 2020.

Simple Face Coverings Needed at the Mustard Seed and at IHN

Now that wearing face masks has been recommend-ed for everyone, the guests at the Mustard seed are asking for help.

Many thanks to Viv, Kathy and Donna who have donated beautifully sewed masks, and simple pieces of fabric and ban-danas to just tie on. No-sew instructions on line are very helpful.

Food Donations Appreciated and Still Needed

Thank you to everyone who donated food this past week! It refilled the Mustard Seed Food Pantry so that we were able to continue to feed all who come to our door. Many who come to us for assistance are

the essential workers who continue to strive to feed their children and serve others. They stock the grocery selves, clean hospital rooms, work as nurses aids and so much more. Non perishable food items, toilet paper, as well as cleaning and hygiene products continue to be a constant need.

Join St. George’s “Food Donation Team” For information on bargains and/or to join the team, just email Dave at [email protected]

Special needs for May are:

Tuna Fish, Canned vegetables, and Peanut Butter

Please leave donations in the “Outreach Collection Area” of the church basement. Thank You!

St. George Parish Scholarship Applications 2020

This year’s Scholarship Applications are available on our Parish Website. The due date is June 1, 2020.

The Family Connection

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day

Here are some ideas to cele-brate mom:

• Breakfast in bed,

• Make a list of all your favorite things about mom,

• Play cards and eat M&M’s together,

• Remember a deceased mom with prayer,

• Tell a favorite story about mom.

Lord God, bless our mother with all good things: health, joy, love and laughter. Keep her in your care and protect her from all which is harmful. And grant her peace and justice all her days.

A Christian Steward receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and ac-countable manner, shares them in justice and love with all, and returns them with increase to the Lord.

Interfaith Hospitality Network Shelter 91 June St. Worcester, MA

Our commitment to IHN continues especially during these challenging times when our prayers and sup-port are needed more than ever.

Plans and Policies have been put in place to keep families, staff and volunteers safe and healthy. With six families, each living in one bedroom each and all of the children home from school and daycare, you can well imagine that the needs are similar to your own family’s needs but multiplied many times over and complicated by homelessness and limited re-sources.

A collection box for IHN has been set up in our St. George Outreach Collection Area. As you might guess, here are some of the items that are needed:

• Paper towels, toilet paper, tissues

• Face masks

• Hand soap, bath soap, laundry detergent, and dish washing liquid

• Disinfectant spray and bleach

• Juice, rice, and canned soups

St. George Parish Service Week June 21 –27, 2020.

Our on-site volunteer presence will be covered by donations which will pay for the staff to cover the 84 hours that our parish volunteers and students usually supply. Grocery Cards that have been donated throughout the year will cover the necessary meals and the families will cook for themselves. As our ser-vice week approaches we will publish special needs here in our bulletin. Your prayers are especially need-ed and appreciated.

May - The Month of Mary

During this month of May we lean on the tradition of our faith and pray through the in-

tersession of the Blessed Virgin Mary who under-stands the fears and worries of families every-

where. Driving up to our St. George Mary Garden is a safe and prayerful place to visit and to

pray from the car. All are welcome!

Thank you to all of our faithful knitters who continue to spread comfort and kind-ness through their generous work!

During this difficult time we knit and pray as we work from home.

New members are invited to join this im-portant ministry of outreach to the sick, suffering and lonely.

When this time of social distancing is over we will gather and share the work that is being done now. It will be great to be able to be together again! There will be many folks in need of the gifts we are preparing for them. As we work, our pray-ers will comfort those who are suffering. “Blessings in the Chaos”- Jan Richardson

To all that is chaotic in you, let there come silence.

Let there be a calming of the clamoring, A stillness of the voices that have laid their

claim on you that have made their home in you.

That go with you even to the holy places but will not rest,

Will not let you hear your life with wholeness or Feel the grace that fashioned you.

Let what distracts you cease. Let what divides you cease.

Let there come an end to what diminishes and de-means and

Let there depart all that keeps you in its cage. Let there be an opening in the quiet that lies be-

neath the chaos, Where you find a peace you did not think possible

and See what shimmers within the storm.

Praying as a Parish Family

Recently, Bishop McManus asked that each Parish in the Diocese commit ONE DAY EACH WEEK to

pray for the wellbeing and protection of all affected, in any way, by Covid-19. Our Parish Day of Prayer

is EVERY FRIDAY. Thank You to the many parishioners who have already committed to an hour of prayer. If you would

like to sign up for a specific hour, please call JoAnn Nally @ 508-527-6973 or

email me @ [email protected]. Although we cannot gather together at this time, we still have the opportunity to unite in spirit as a Faith Community giving thanks to our Loving God. Like you, I look forward to the day when we will come

together to worship and celebrate God’s great good-

ness to each one of us and our Parish Family. If I can be of assistance to you, please contact me and

know that I hold you in prayer each day.
