“Another way…”

Happy New Year!

Epiphany means “manifestation.” During the season of Epiphany we celebrate the revelation of Christ to all nations. There are three epiphany narratives that are significant this time of year.

1. January 6th- The Magi’s adoration of the Christ child 2. January 13th- Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan River

3. January 20th – Jesus first miracle of changing water into wine

Recalling the first epiphany when the magi knelt down to pay the Christ child homage and offering him frankincense, gold, and myrrh; the magi were impacted in a major way! After their visit, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod and they left for their own country by… “another way!”

There is a twofold meaning to “another way.” The first reason is that Herod was going to kill the firstborn… Jesus. The second reason points to faith. The magi’s hearts were changed. They went home… in another sort of way. Instead of fear, they walked home another way….by faith! Later it would come to be in the Acts of the Apostles that the first Christians were called followers of “the Way!” The magi were also called wise men. Perhaps not by societal standards of the day, for they were known as astrologist stargazers, but now through the lens of Epiphany… they were certainly wise.

Perhaps this new start to a new year will bring about “another way” for you! Whether it’s a new year’s resolution of eating healthier or getting balance in your life with work and family; 2019 presents the opportunity for another way to walk… a new route or road to travel on! Epiphany presents the same invitation! Like the magi, it wasn’t fear that changed their hearts… it was love…born unto them in the manger, this Jesus who was born for them and all as a savior of the people. Epiphany invites us on a spiritual Journey of “get-to’s” not “got-to’s” where we encounter the light of Christ revealed… or made manifest in our lives. On January 23rd, you are all invited to a special presentation of men who are walking “another

way!” From 6:45-8:00 on Wednesday night in the sanctuary, come and see and hear the

amazing testimonies of the TEEN CHALLENGE men! This Epiphany event promises be a

beautiful witness through song and story of how Jesus Christ saves!

See you in Church! Pastor Hans

TRANSITION UPDATE: CALL COMMITTEE As I have shared in previous Temple Talks and in a recent letter to the Congregation, the

Vision Council believes Trinity is a strong, healthy congregation and can bypass the interim/transition pastor stage. Having collected congregation feedback and suggestions through the recent survey, the Vision Council feels it is time for the Call Committee to begin its work. They will begin meeting in January and it will be their responsibility to conduct interviews and recommend a senior pastor candidate. Trinity members will have an opportunity to meet the candidate and then to vote on the candidate at a congregational meeting. Under Trinity’s constitution, an associate pastor has the option to apply for the senior pastor

role, during the call process. Please keep Trinity and the members of the Call Committee in your prayers as we take this

next step in our transition. Don’t hesitate to reach out to members of the Call Committee or

Vision Council if you have any questions regarding the call process.

LAKES AREA MUSIC FESTIVAL'S WINTER SERIES World-renowned baritone John Taylor Ward returns to Minnesota for a recital entitled Winter

Journey, with pianist Scott Lykins. On Sunday, January 6, 2 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa, the duo will continue the Lakes Area Music Festival's Winter Series with a performance of Franz Schubert's monumental song cycle Winterreise. The performance is open to the public; no tickets required, donations accepted. Regarded as the pinnacle of German lieder, Schubert’s

cycle of 24 songs tells the story of a narrator's journey through the bitter cold of winter. Having lost his beloved, and acknowledging his impending mortality, he departs under cover of darkness and provides a reflective account. The piano provides vivid portrayals of the natural landscape – the wind, rivers, trees, flowers, birds, and snow – that the narrator encounters, impacting his internal struggles. More at lakesareamusic.org/winter/winter-journey PLEASE DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT BAGS – We are looking for

donations of empty gift bags that you are willing to part with after the Holidays to be used for next year's Boutique. Mid-size bags are especially needed. You can drop off the bags in the church office.
