Essex 2020 is the UK’s first year-long, mass participation celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths.
The programme will be a series of events, exhibitions, projects and challenges and conferences for every Essex resident to encounter in some way.

SkillsScience and maths related occupations accounted for 0.1% of apprenticeships started in Essex in 2016. It is getting better, but there is work to do.
Through collaboration, Essex 2020 will be a big platform for working together better to put STEAM learning into context across all education levels.
From big picture themes, such as the UK’s 2020 mission to Mars or cybersecurity – to inspirational moments, such as children writing a climate manifesto for Essex or immersive technology helping under-represented groups to develop problem-solving skills.

The futureEssex 2020 will be a platform for unlocking stories – from Marconi’s pioneering telecommunications in 1920 to the engineers and entrepreneurs designing software and cameras for space travel far beyond 2020.
This programme will be a catalyst for both young people and adults to think about their own ambitions, skills and the world they want to design.
Podcast interviews, Essex 2020 Ambassadors, video content and showcase events will tell aspirational stories to a wide audience.

1. Essex 2020 Hub Challenges
Essex 2020 has six Hubs that cover the whole county. Each Essex 2020 Hub is led by a non-profit organistion, working on activities with communities, schools/colleges, business networks and cultural venues.
Each Hub could run projects, using creative, interactive, puzzles and problem-solving events to improve finance, creativity and technology skills of 100s of children from disadvantaged parts of their Hub region.

2. The Essex 2020 Podcast, in association with your business
16 exclusive interviews are being lined-up with ambassadors, influencers and Essex 2020 event organisers from the worlds of science, business, finance, technology, the arts, engineering and the media.
Professionally produced bite-sized chats will be distributed on every major audio streaming platform with an anticipated audience of over 10,000. These stories of aspiration, invention and change-making will be the heart of a major digital marketing and story-telling campaign.

3. Essex 2020 Project Grants, in association with your business
Over 200 project ideas have been submitted to the Essex 2020 already – from large public realm participation events, to schools science festivals and interactive technology conferences.
With a central investment pot of grants between £500 - £5,000, we can enable inspirational activity to happen at scale, and in parts of the county not usually reached. Match-funding has already been pledged from local and regional funding sources, so every grant – and project impact - could be easily doubled.
