STAGE POSITIONS

Upstage means away from the footlights, doz, vnstage means toward the footlights, and right andleft are used with reference to the actor as he facesthe audience .. R means right, L Ineans left, U meansup, D means down, C means centeY, and these abbreviations are used in cornbination, as: U R for upYight, R C for right center, D Lefor down left cenley, etc. A territory designated on the stage refersto a general area, rather than to a given point ..

NOTE: Before starting rehearsals, chalk offyour stage or rehearsal space as indicated above inthe Chart of Stage Positions.. Then teach your actors the meanings and positions of these fundamental terms of stage movement by having them walkfrom one position to another until they are familiar\vith them. The use of these abbreviated terms indirecting the play saves time, speeds up rehearsals, and reduces the amount of explanation the directorhas to give to his actors ..
