Newsletter 03/2017 2 February 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners

I always hear people say: “I just don’t know how high school teachers do it? Dealing with teenagers all day must be so difficult!”

I have a four year old and I often say: “I don’t know how foundation phase teachers do it! These little ones need constant attention and ask a billion questions a day!” She will ask questions like “Mommy, where did you buy me from?” or “Mommy, why don’t we have twelve fingers?” or “Mommy, why can’t animals talk?”

At my daughter’s first parents’ evening this month, her teacher said something that really stuck with me. She said that parents need to make sure that they have meaningful conversations with their children every day. Give them more information than needed. If they ask why they need to eat their vegetables, don’t just tell them because it’s good for them. Tell them WHY it’s good for them by teaching them what vitamins and minerals are.

“A child educated only at school, is an uneducated child” – George Santayana.

In high school, one teacher spends about 40 minutes a day with your child, while there are 24 other learners in the class as well. We have to teach everything the curriculum requires and our time is very limited. To complement what we offer in the classroom, it is extremely important for you to discuss current affairs with your children. Listen to the news on the radio and discuss it with your child. For example, talk about how the current strikes are influencing our economy; explain how your pension and medical aid funds work, why we pay taxes and how to compile a budget.

I encourage you to use every available opportunity to teach your children something new and valuable.

Yours sincerely

Sports Lockers for Hire Lockers specially designed to hold bulky sports equipment, such as a large cricket bag, are now available for learners to hire. These lockers are located in the bike shed and the area is locked and secure during the school day. A locker can be hired at R150.00 for the year. This amount is payable to the book keeper, who will then allocate a numbered locker to the learner. The learner must then provide his/her own lock in order to secure the contents of the locker.
