Relations between Collections and Services• Relationships exist

– Between collections and (informational) services– Between collections

• In NISO MI conceptual model– A collection is-made-available-by zero or more

services– A service makes-available exactly one

collection– A collection is-part-of zero or more (super-)

collections (parent)– A collection has-parts zero or more (sub-)

collections (child)

Collection Description

• TG2 decision to build on Dublin Core Collection Description Application Profile (DC CD AP)– Activity of DCMI Collection Description WG

• A "core" set of collection description properties– For simple collection-level descriptions – Suitable for a broad range of collections– Primarily to support discovery of collections

• Building on RSLP data model & schema– examine collection attributes (only) of RSLP CD Schema

as starting point– excludes Location, Service, Agent description

DC CD AP: Progress Report

• Data model– extend Heaney E-R model to cover Service

• Specify collection attributes– starting from RSLP CD Schema– but excludes Location, Service, Agent description

• Specify terms (properties/classes) required– conform to DCMI Abstract Model– references some existing terms, requires some new terms

• Assign URIs for new properties/classes– proposals to DCMI Usage Board– non-DCMI naming authority for some new terms?

• Define bindings– use DCMI recommendations

NISO MI CD Schema & DC CD AP

• DC CD AP still work in progress– data model: (Location/Service)– Abstract Model: one-to-one rule– Some proposed terms still to be assigned URIs

• Scope and specificity of DC CD AP v NISO MI CD Schema– NISO MI addressing (primarily) library service providers– Some library-specific requirements

• e.g. completeness of collection

– NISO MI CD Schema as superset of DC CD AP– NISO MI CD as second (similar) DCAP
