It was a fantastic Friday of fund-raising for Children in Need 2016 organised by Mrs Morgan and her Year 7 tutor group.Beckfoot Upper Heaton managed to raise £491.99!Thank you to everyone who supported the Big Spotacular and organised the Lego man competition, treasure hunt, bake sale, book sale and the jelly bean in the jar competition.

CHILDREN IN NEED

Welcome to our school magazine. It’s fantastic and I really hope you enjoy reading it. I am thrilled that our students and staff have worked together to create this to be enjoyed by all members of our community. Under the leadership of Ms Irfan and Ms Armitage our student production team have been busy deciding what to include and have demonstrated unique skills in editing content and shaping design from concept to end product; I’m proud of them. The vision is for this magazine to become even more student-centred and they want to ensure that they create something that reflects their school, is celebratory and special. This edition is a review of our amazing year

and is a great read from start to finish. Indeed, it makes me feel incredibly fortunate and proud to lead this school and also to be a member of the Beckfoot Upper Heaton community. We have incredible people here and I really hope you enjoy the various articles about what we have been getting up to since September. Exciting times lay ahead. Enjoy! Simon Wade

Message from the Head

The Beckfoot Upper Heaton student leadership (BUHSL) group have been busy! We are eight students who have been elected by the students. Every member of the BUHSL group had to come up with a project to carry out. After a lot of discussion and presentations to the senior leadership team we agreed to focus on three main projects. The impact projects are a new reward system, gaining a Healthy

Schools award and an Eco award. We ultimately want to make sure our school is a healthy one and that we are doing our bit for the environment. So far we have designed a new rewards system which will be launched in September and are currently working on Healthy Schools and Eco Awards. We are hoping to have these awarded by Christmas.

We have also been part of the interview panel for new staff, interviewing and giving student tours. To help give us direction we have also been working on a 3 year vision which sits alongside the whole school vision. We look forward to updating you on our progress in the Autumn term.By Mohammed Umair on behalf of the BUHSL group.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP GROUP

I want to start by thanking you for taking the time to read our school magazine.

This year has been an epic journey for Beckfoot Upper Heaton, we have moved to our new school, embraced new challenges like new GCSE specifications and have extended the school by welcoming girls from the local area.

This magazine aims to celebrate all of the amazing things that our students have achieved this year; I alongside many others, could not be more proud of our students, parents and community.

I was visited by two Year 7 students (Kohinoor Hussain and Mariam Khalifa) this week who wanted to present me with a poem they had written about the new school. Have a read:

Beckfoot Upper Heaton

Rapidly walking into school

Excited as anything

We immediately saw and smelt

The shiny new paint

Quietly wondering

How long it would take them

To build it and now it’s finally here

All for you and me

Look at how much time and effort

They put in

It looks like a future business school

We are spoilt!

We are over the moon

And at noon

All we think of is this new school

Message from the

Editor

Lastly, I look forward to delivering more good news in the near future!

Miss Irfan

Exhibition

On Wednesday 28 September, a few of our students along with Miss Duthie and Miss Khan were invited to attend the SUSOMAD Awards Evening at Aagrah Midpoint for a night of celebration and achievement. The students below were rewarded for their contributions following their amazing year as SUSOMAD Ambassadors:Mohammed Shahid, Amaan Ali, Muaaz Subhaan, Hasib Ahmed, Mohammed Luqmaan, Adam Mahmood, Hassan Mahmood. Well done boys!

On Friday 27 January the following students represented our school at the Holocaust Memorial Day service at City Hall:Year 7: Sophie Smith, Kohinoor Hussain, Hafsah Khan, Sumbal Mughal.Year 10: Muaaz Subhaan,Mohammed Shahid, Kasongo Bukomo, Hasib Ahmed. All students involved were a real credit to our school on such a moving occasion. The girls led speeches focusing on Bradford as a city of sanctuary alongside the theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day “How can life go on?” and the boys showcased the Srebrenica Exhibition.

For Comic Relief our students showed what it means to be considerate of others and understand what it means to put other people first. Loads of activities took place including a penalty shoot-out, basketball challenge, cake sales etc. to raise money. We raised over £500 for charity which is a staggering amount given the size of our school.

Our student leaders were pivotal to the success of the day and they showed exactly what is expected from our young people in terms of leadership and responsibility.

Monday 6 March was focused on remembrance 100 years on and how the lessons learnt over the weekend can be brought into our community. Awais and Zishan took part in the Coming World Remember Me Workshop financed by the Flanders Government similar to the Tower of London Poppies project; their pottery figure will be part of a memorial dedicated to the 600,000 people killed in Flanders during the First World War.Following on from the tour Awais and Zishan took part in the Legacy 110 Project in which they lead remembrance both at school and in Bradford. The boys were identified as being a credit to Bradford, their families and our school. I feel proud of them both and thanks to Miss Duthie for accompanying them.

Two of our Year 11 students Awais Hassan and Zishan Ali represented our school community on the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme over the first weekend in March.

First World War Centenary Battlefield

Tours Programme

On Saturday 4 March they took part in the ceremony of the Last Post at Menin Gate Ypres, experienced what trench life was like at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele and identified individual stories in Lijssenthoek Cemetery. Focusing on individual stories the students evaluated the human cost of World War One.On Sunday 5 March the tour moved into France and assessed how far the Battle of the Somme was really a disaster for the British Army by visiting Vimy Ridge, Sunken Lane and Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. The day culminated in paying respects on behalf of Beckfoot Upper Heaton at the Thiepval Memorial with a very moving reflection.

As part of the SUSOMAD programme with Bradford Cohesion, our ambassadors undertook an intense day learning the ins and outs of presenting the Anne Frank: A History For Today Exhibition in school. The Exhibition told the story of Anne Frank against the background of the Holocaust and the Second World War. It showed photographs of Anne Frank’s childhood in Frankfurt and in Amsterdam, and portrayed the rise of the Nazis, the persecution of the Jews and the way the people responded to this.Hafsah Khan, Kohinoor Hussain and Sophie Smith gave speeches at the launch of the Anne Frank + U Exhibition highlighting the impact of the ambassador role on them personally. The event took place on the evening of Wednesday 29 March 2017 with the Lord Mayor in attendance. The feedback received was outstanding! Our ambassadors subsequently lead KS3 classes around the exhibition as part of the peer education programme encouraging our community to Stand Up, Speak Out and Make A Difference!

Wider Learning Day

A Careers Fair took place on Thursday 19 January as part of the broader Futures Day. We had 21 providers in attendance including employers such as Yeme Architects, further and higher education institutions, work-based training providers (Apprenticeship providers) and the uniformed services (Police, Royal Navy and the Army). The National Citizens Service (NCS) and Connexions were also in attendance.Students from Year 9 upwards greatly benefitted from the Careers Fair and despite some being initially shy approaching the organisations, by the end they didn’t want to leave. Also Leeds City College, Keighley Campus delivered a session on Aptitude Tests through their Careers Software

Package run by Timothy Jickells and his colleague for Year 11 students to explore their interests, subject choices and the type of careers this may lead into.Furthermore we had Shaban Din who delivered the keynote address to students. Shaban is an ex-student who has, since leaving school in 1999, become a very successful entrepreneur. Shaban is CEO of SD Prestige & Performance which is a dealership for high end vintage cars and bespoke styling specialist for Range Rovers. Shaban has had customers from all over the world and is a keen supporter of the school. He has offered to take our students on a guided tour of his dealership and is keen for our students to succeed in life just as he has.

FUTURES DAY

The aims of the day were to provide an opportunity for students to find out more information about different careers and the routes taken after Year 13, enhance their employability skills through interview techniques and CV building and lastly equip students with the knowledge and skills associated with managing a budget/ personal finance.A special thanks to our guests Dave Forrest (Director at Volunteer Centre Bradford), Dr Shabir (Airedale Hospital), David Carter (IT at Redcentric PLC), lawyer Shakeel Dad and Kamil Dunworth (Head of Marketing, Lahores).Extremely positive and complimentary feedback was left by all the guests, so a proud moment yet again for our Sixth Form.

The talks from our guests allowed students

to gain knowledge of:✔ The company / career and what service it provides

✔ Other similar or alternative companies / careers

✔ Average wage and pay structure

✔ Career prospects and progression✔ Employment statistics

✔ Entry requirements

✔ The relevance of employability skills

Visit to Arla Dairies

On Monday 17 October, Year 8 students took part in a STEM event organised by Mr Aslam.A STEM ambassador attended our school and presented Year 8 students with the challenge of the creation of a solar vehicle.Students built solar powered vehicles using energy from the sun. This event took place to broaden the understanding of alternative energy sources as the world population is increasing and fossil fuels are running out.Students had to engineer a solution which was on cars.

The trip to Arla Dairies in Leeds was the first outing for our new BTEC National Diploma students in Year 12. To see the workings of a large industrial dairy processing plant, that processes every litre of milk for every brand of supermarket in the UK, as well as their own branded milk products, was quite an eye opener. To give you some idea of size, 1.9 million litres of milk are processed every day.

Not only did our students look fantastic in their sixth form dress but their level of enthusiasm and engagement throughout the talk and tour was brilliant. Our two Arla representatives were so impressed with them that we received some lovely comments via an email. They were particularly impressed with Toheed Hussain and Moheed Mumtaz who could not stop answering or asking questions throughout the morning. The boys expressed the right balance of enthusiasm and sense of humour to make the sessions fun and enjoyable for the Arla representatives. Our students positively represented Beckfoot Upper Heaton and built another bridge with a large international company who would welcome back students from our school in the future.

STEM

On Tuesday 14 March, year 10 and some lucky year 9 students attended a performance at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. Students found it a valuable experience and one student commented: “WHOA!...There’s bare sick people!” (translation - “I had no idea William Shakespeare was so popular.)

Furthermore, the performance of Romeo and Juliet itself was fantastic. It was modern, humorous and engaging for the students. So much so, another student remarked:

“It was better than TV.”

Lastly, the boys found the trip both rewarding and educational which was an added bonus.

I was selected to represent my school Beckfoot Upper Heaton at Cliff Castle Museum. I took part in historical observations and a debate about “whether or not Egyptian artefacts should be kept in England.” This developed my debating skills. I was placed on a team I wouldn’t have necessarily sided with however, I warmed to the argument and delivered some interesting ideas.

I was mesmerised by the different exhibitions. It was amazing how small objects, such as coins, held so much history and background. A specific object left me in awe, this was the real life mummified body of a small boy. X-rays showed damage to the body which intrigued me. We also looked at intricate jewellery and rusty pans, this made me realise that everything had a story.

I would love to go back to Cliff Castle and explore life before the modern age.

Review by Hafsah Khan

Student Review of Cliff Castle

A writer named Dan Ingram-Brown attended the school for an eight week writing course.Dan is a Yorkshire based author and playwright involved in a wide range of work, from writing for children to community theatre and contemporary performance. He ran First Story workshops with Key Stage 3 students and in the end these students had their work published.

First Story Writing Workshops

‘First story has been amazing, we had such fun writing with Daniel Ingram Brown. We got to work closely with him for eight sessions, one every Wednesday which lasted a little over an hour. Our sessions were jam-packed with back to back fun but most importantly imagination and creativity. We had times where we were inspired by place names and other times we wereinspired by props.

I think my proudest achievement is knowing that I am now a published author; my name can be entered in the British Library (all the way in London) and I will come up as an author. This opportunity that has been provided by our English department has really inspired me to enjoy creative writing and not to be ashamed of it, it is also a really valuable skill for English and will help me in my final GCSE year.

Finally, I want to take the time to say a big thank you to Dan for attending our workshop and to Mrs Morgan for encouraging me to attend them.’

Ebrahim Daya, Year 10

On the early morning of Monday 5 December, Miss Shabir and Mr Ahmed set off for a residential trip to Malham with Year 12 BTEC and Year 13 A-level Biology students. The first day, the FSC staff, Abby and Frankie, led discussions about succession and its impact on the local ecology. They then took us to the cliff edge and the students used specialist equipment, such as quadrats, light intensity meters, pH meters and a penetrometer (which measures soil compaction) to take a variety of readings to gather information about the local biodiversity along the cliff.During the night, we set mammal traps to see if we could catch a mouse when they came out to feed.On the second day, the students again used the equipment and tools to measure the difference in biodiversity

between plants in a newly grown field and a field that had sheep grazing on it. We also had the delight of a one and a half mile walk to the beck, where we took samples of organisms including invertebrates living under the rocks in the fresh water stream. On the second evening, students planned their own investigation using all the field work techniques they had learnt over the past few days. Planning and preparation included choosing equipment, carrying out risk assessments, step by step methods and aspects of how they would sample and analyse data. On the morning of the third and final day, they carried out and collated results from their investigation to set out in a scientific report. All students independently carried out fantastic investigations and benefitted from this unique experience ending with a lovely group photo and leaving with great memories.

TRIP TO MALHAM

Page 6: A CELEBRATION OF OUR SCHOOL YEAR - Enjoy – Learn · Mohammed Umair, Amaan Ali, Azaan Akram, front row-Saail Bukhari, Sophie Smith ... Hassan and Zishan Ali represented our school

Just before Christmas one of our Year 11 students, Muhammed Subhani, made a decision not to wait for someone to make things happen for him and he applied for an apprenticeship with Aston Martin as part of their design team. He sent off his portfolio along with an application and a few weeks later learned that they wanted to see him at their headquarters in Gayden, Warwickshire. He competed against other much older applicants, most of whom were graduates, to secure a final interview in March.

Shortly afterwards Muhammed phoned Aston Martin as requested. A number of staff congregated outside the office trying to read his body language but he gave nothing away! At the end of his conversation he came out and told everyone that he had just changed his life and would be working for Aston Martin at their HQ in September. Shouts and hugs followed and the reaction of the staff was truly wonderful. Muhammed has achieved the most incredible result and proved that anything is possible if you aim high, work hard and never give up on your dreams. We are so very proud of him as is his family. Special thanks to Mr Hogan who drove him to both interviews

and looked after him throughout the process and to Ms Bone who provided support, guidance, inspiration and motivation as well as a place to work and talk.

Music UpdateSteel Pan Workshop

Miss Dickson’s Year 8 students took part in a Steel Pan Workshop on Tuesday 22 November.

The students had the opportunity to play on these traditional instruments and create some authentic Caribbean music as part of their current topic on Reggae.

Student Review My name is Mariam Khalifa and I am a proud student of Beckfoot Upper Heaton. In my amazing school, our wonderful teacher Miss Dickson has chosen some year 7 and 8 pupils to learn how to play a mixture of orchestral and rock & pop instruments. Students are playing the violin, viola, cello, guitar and drums. This gives us the opportunity to learn while we are young and be able to get better at playing our instruments when we are older. There is a lot of other music going on all week, pupils sing, play the piano and even have DJ sessions at dinner time or after school.

This term we have also had a Wind Quintet concert here at school, our very own performance of Bradford The Musical, which included music, drama and dance, and a Bamboo Tamboo workshop with a professional musician. That was to prepare us to take part in a World Record attempt of ‘most Bamboo Tamboo players in one performance’ for part of BBC Music day in City Park!

One Bradford, One BandThroughout this year, a group of year 8 and 9 pupils have worked alongside others from Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College, Belle Vue Girls’ School and Bradford Music and Arts Service, in the musical project ‘One Bradford One Band’. During the collaborative sessions, they developed their musical skills and composed original ideas, with the help of the professional musician, Tim Steiner.

Our pupils have visited various schools and venues across Bradford for the ‘One Bradford One Band’ rehearsals and workshops, including Factory Street Studios. We were also fortunate enough to host one of the day sessions here, at Beckfoot Upper Heaton, in our brand new school hall.

The music that has been created in the ‘One Bradford One Band’ project includes pieces of music developed from each individual school. Our Beckfoot Upper Heaton piece is entitled ‘New Day’, and over atmospheric music, the lyrics focus on a positive view of a fresh start featuring ‘Usman’s Theme’, composed by Mohammed Usman Saeed Year 9.

Following the pupils’ hard work, they took part in the final public performances for parents, carers, local primary schools and the public, at the Alhambra Studios and as part of BBC Music Day in City Park.

Mrs Bone took a group of Year 11 students to The Hepworth Wakefield, an art gallery in West Yorkshire. Items from Wakefield’s art collection which span the 16th century to the present day are on display, including works by Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Graham Sutherland, Paul Nash and David Hockney just to name a few.

Anything is possible

It’s been a very busy year for our twelve Princess Diana Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, with meetings, training, organising competitions etc. We have also been very fortunate that six of the Ambassadors were chosen for a pilot scheme for the Anne Frank Trust. This involved writing, producing, acting, filming and then editing a short film entitled Share? The film explores cyber bullying and asks the question, what would you do in the same situation as the children in the film? This will be used in PSHCE lessons in the coming months, with the students leading on the delivery. They have been a reassuring presence around school and I’m sure will continue to be, when the new students join in September.

Half term 5 was the shortest term for the whole academic year. It started on 24 April 2017 and consisted of 5 weeks. Within this time there was a bank holiday so students had to complete 24 days to have 100% attendance. With it being the 5th half term and the 5th month and there being 5 weeks, 5 days in a week and 5 lessons per day, Beckfoot Upper Heaton launched a challenge to all students. We asked all students whether they could commit to 100% attendance resulting in them being entered into a prize draw. We as a school wanted to recognise the majority of our students who do come to school every day. Therefore, to promote attendance further we launched a competition; The 5 Alive Challenge. Prizes for the winners were as follows:First prize: a day trip to RAF LyntonSecond prize: a £20 Cineworld voucherThird prize: a £20 Pizza Hut voucherThe winners were: Muhammaed Qureshi, Anees Muhammad, Adam Hussain, Rohan Mohammed and Abdul Rehman. Congratulations to the above students and thank you to all students that took part and to all parents/carers for their continued support.

Reward Trips On 24 May 2017 a large number of students were treated to a day out of school - a trip to Lightwater Valley. Every student with +97% attendance and a positive attitude to learning throughout the year were invited to enjoy the trip. The sun was shining and the park was full of all the usual thrills and excitement. Staff and students spent time together relaxing and enjoying the day alongside other schools from the Beckfoot Trust. The coach was full of laughter and excitement on the journey to the theme park, strangely quiet and sleepy on the return journey. Some were even cuddling large Teddies as they snoozed on the journey home – I’ll mention no names. As a school we understand the importance of recognising the achievements of all our students at every level. Attending school every day with a positive attitude towards their learning will enable every child at Beckfoot Upper Heaton to get the very best out of these important school years. We have some great plans for new and exciting reward events this year and I hope to see many students involved as a result of their hard work.

Michael Midgley

Mr Stupak has provided Basketball sessions throughout the year for all year groups to attend at break times providing endless opportunities for students. Next academic year Beckfoot Upper Heaton will be competing against other schools.

Football and Cricket clubs have also been hugely popular with all year groups and all abilities, with students keen to represent school in their respective league fixtures. Many students have been encouraged to take their talents to local clubs in the area and are now playing for teams on a weekend including Muaaz Subhan, Usman Riaz and Saad Khan to name a few.We have also had Hans Soova, a local Table Tennis coach, in school providing free Table Tennis sessions. Hans has been a pioneer of the sport for many years and has made an impact on the students to play Table Tennis regularly at Table Tennis Club.

Finally, PC Tony Hooson has been providing boxing sessions for all to enjoy. The completion of a 10 week course will provide participants with a boxing certificate ‘The Contender Award’. PC Hooson has already selected some students from Beckfoot Upper Heaton to join the boxing gym in Bradford where he has a major influence on the future of young talent. In the forthcoming academic year students will be able to enjoy more PE outside on the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and the new sports field once it has been levelled and seeded.Exciting times!

It has been a great year for sport at Beckfoot Upper Heaton this year. Extra-curricular numbers have massively increased since moving into our new facilities. New sporting disciplines have also been added to the curriculum to expose students to a range of sports and experiences.
