From the Principal One particular sign of a healthy school environment is an active student leadership who are given opportunities to articulate a collective student voice in the school.

In the last week of term there were two events that epitomised an active student voice. On Monday, the College held a student forum for sixty student leaders who represented each of the year groups from Year 8 to Year 12. The following day student leaders led the school community in a HAART campaign activity at the commencement of the day.

Student leaders from across Year 8 to Year 12 recently gathered in the school hall and met to discuss and comment on areas such as house spirit, uniform, environment, liturgy, social justice, ERA for Change, the arts and sport.

The student forums, which take place once a semester, bring together students from each year group who represent different portfolios in the school such as Culture and Curriculum, Social Justice, ERA for Change, Liturgy, the Environment, Sport and the six houses.

Amongst the topics that students discussed were suggestions on ways to increase house spirit through slogans, house chants and an expansion of the points system to incorporate more cultural and academic activities across the school.

Students were eager to see an expansion of options for students in areas such as film and photography in respect to activities, competitions and curriculum. They acknowledged chess competitions currently in place but suggested more opportunities for boys to play chess informally at school. In the area of debating they suggested more competition against a greater variety of schools.

They also expressed definite views on the use of the new school hats, which will be distributed to the students at the commencement of next term. Their discussions turned to their use for sun safety as well as for house and team competition in sports periods and their compulsory use on school carnival days.

Students acknowledged the year Masses as a positive addition to the liturgies at school but generally suggested that optional Masses also had their place in the school calendar.

Students expressed a passion for the importance of the Homeless Hub, the HAART Campaign and the other activities that promoted charities such as SCARF Foundation and the Missions Appeal that have taken place in semester one.

On this note on Tuesday of this week the students led the Edmund Rice community in the HAART Campaign. The early morning activity, led by the senior students, was a very successful school event. The HAART campaign recognizes the tragedy of the 2.1 million children in Africa and elsewhere in the world who are living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In countries where health systems have very little money or skilled staff, particularly staff trained in pediatric AIDS, children living with HIV struggle to get treatment, many of which are forgotten in global and national efforts to address AIDS.

A reminder to parents that next week’s Parent Teacher days will be held on Thursday, 30 June from 1.00pm to 7.30pm and on Friday, 1 July from 8.30pm to 1.00pm. Reports will be available on the Parent Portal from Wednesday, 29 June. I encourage parents and carers to make online appointments to discuss the progress of your child with each of their teachers.

I would like to wish all members of our College community – our parents, staff and students, a restful and enjoyable holiday break. Students commence back at the College for Term 3 on Monday, 18 July.

NSWCCC Basketball Diocesan Knockout On Thursday 23

rd June the Diocesan qualifying knockout was held at Beaton Park for the Junior (7/8s) and Intermediate

(9/10s) teams. Teams needed to win the day to progress to the NSWCCC State Finals in Term 4.

7/8s A’s Team: The A’s Team played John Therry in their first game and won 42-33. They were up against a very tall and athletic team but managed to contain their key scores in the second half and did a good job of controlling the tempo in the last 5 minutes of the game. Their second (final) game was against Holy Spirit. The boys were determined to get the win and this was evident as they got off to a strong start to the game scoring their first 6 points off fast break opportunities. The team’s goal was to play in more control on the offensive end and to create pressure situations on the defensive end. It was a great team effort and everyone contributed positively to come up with a convincing win 43-25! This team will now progress to the CCC Finals later in the year. Well done, and congratulations boys. Ethan Hedger, Noah Murphy, Josh Thompson, Lachlan Damir, Saxon Schettino, Callum Hilton-Picen, Levi Hannigan, Dylan Phipps, Jayden Wright, Christian Bahlmann

7/8s B Team: The B’s Team was asked to join late as another school pulled out. The boys were very keen and enthusiastic to compete and with little preparation produced a solid effort on the day against a skilled Holy Spirit team. All players gave it their best effort however were defeated 95-26. Thanks to all for coming together at such a late stage! James Bramble, Sam Ciguenza, Aiden Rice, Joseph Iacovelli, Joel Desfontaines, Alfred Gueco, Jack Gardner, Nathen Yau, Nicholas Ward. The 9/10s only had the one game against St John’s (Nowra). They boasted a Nationally ranked player, while the ERC team had a decent blend of local representative players. The plan or focus on defence was to shut down the main player from the opposition, and in offence play within our structure. After a slow start Team ERC finally got their rhythm and started to play some good team basketball. At half time there was a basket difference in the scores in favour of ERC. In the second half, Team ERC played better team basketball and in the end accounted for the opposition by 16 points (58-42). I would like to thank and challenge all the players to commit to a solid term of training (Term 3) before the state titles in Term 4. The team consisted of: William Lobb, Kyle Veerhuis, Brodie Howson, Ethan-James Laudato, Michael Sandona, Riley Crystal-Foy, Teejae Keeble, Angus Ferguson, Zane Granger, Konnor Stefanou and Mason Scott (injured). Chinese, Ms Aungles The Year 9, 10 and 11 Elective Chinese students enjoyed an authentic Chinese Dinner on Wednesday evening. The Noodle Plate Restaurant in Wollongong served up a Hunan style Chinese banquet consisting of; spring rolls, stir fry beef, spicy chicken, hot chilli potato and more. It was gratifying to see the look of surprise on the faces of the Chinese customers when they overheard the Australian students speaking in Chinese, one customer going as far as wishing the students "goodbye" in Chinese as we left the restaurant.
