Comunión y Confesión

Recuerdo que cuando era chiquito tuve que aprender los “cinco mandamientos de la Santa Madre Iglesia” (Catecismo #2041-2043), y todavía los recuerdo perfectamente. El que me resultaba mas difícil entender era el segundo, que dice “confesar los pecados mortales al menos una vez al año, y en peligro de muerte, y si se ha de comulgar”. Me parecía un mandamiento muy largo y no me daba cuenta que explicaba tres ocasiones en las que uno debe confesar los pecados mortales. Pero muchos de nosotros, por diferentes razones, a menudo culturales, no hemos entendido bien la relación entre la confesión y la comunión.

Si nos fijamos bien en lo que dice el mandamiento de la Iglesia, la confesión antes de la comunión se debe hacer si uno ha cometido algún pecado mortal. Estos son aquellos que nos apartan totalmente de Dios y destruyen el amor que existe en nuestros corazones (#1855). Para que esto suceda, tenemos que obrar muy gravemente, en clara contradicción de los diez mandamientos, y hacerlo sabiendo que lo que vamos a hacer es algo grave, algo que afectara nuestra relación con Dios y aun así hacerlo (#’s 1844ff).

Como sabemos, los pecados mortales son distintos de los veniales. Los pecados veniales son aquellos que, aunque ofenden a Dios, no destruyen el amor que existe en nuestros corazones ni nos alejan totalmente de Dios. Estos son los pecados que, aun pudiéndolos evitar, son parte de la vida de cualquier ser humano. Como explico el Papa Benedicto XVI a unos niños que se preparaban para la primera comunión, los pecados veniales son como el polvo que poco a poco ensucia la casa. Los pecados veniales son como ese polvo que, aunque no dañan el hogar, tampoco hacen que se vea muy limpio. Así podríamos decir que los pecados mortales son como una tormenta de arena que sepulta el hogar y lo hace casi inhabitable.

La mayoría de nuestros pecados son los pecados veniales y, como indica el catecismo de la Iglesia, no estamos obligados a confesar estos antes de recibir la comunión. De hecho, la Eucaristía borra estos pecados (#1394). Son los pecados mortales aquellos que estamos llamados a confesar antes de recibir la comunión.

Todos estamos llamados a participar activamente en la Misa, no solo con nuestras oraciones y cantos, sino también recibiendo la comunión. Seria como estar invitados a una fiesta de cumpleaños y no comer pastel, símbolo de la alegría de la unidad de los invitados con el homenajeado. Pequeños desacuerdos no impiden celebrar el cumpleaños. Solo una gran pelea, que haya destruido la amistad con el cumpleañero nos lo impediría. Igualmente, nuestros pecados veniales no nos impiden recibir la comunión, aunque si lo hacen los pecados mortales.

Participemos todos de la Eucaristía, de forma plena, reconociendo nuestras fallas y, si existe la necesidad, participando del sacramento de la reconciliación . Pero también sabiendo que esto es solo un requisito si hemos pecado mortalmente, pues los otros pecados se nos son perdonados durante la misma celebración de la Misa.

Communion and Confession

I remember that when I was a kid I had to learn the “five commandments of the Holy Mother Church” (Catechism #2041-2043), and I remember them word by word even today. The hardest to understand for me was the second one, which said, in are part of the life of any human being. As Pope Benedict in Spanish, “You shall confess your mortal sins at least once a year, when in danger of death, and when you are going to receive communion.” It seemed to me that it was very long and I did not understand that it was explaining three occasions when one must confess mortal sins. But many of us, because of different reasons, often cultural, have not understood correctly this relationship between confession and communion.

If we look closely at what the commandment says, one must go to confession before receiving communion if one has committed a mortal sin. There sins are those that pull us away from God completely and destroy the love that exists in our hearts (#1855). For this to happen, we must carry out some grave action, clearly going against the ten commandments, and knowing that it will affect our relationship with God, we decide to do it nevertheless (#1844ff).

As we know, mortal sins are different from venial ones. Venial sins are those that, although they do offend God, they neither destroy the love that is in our hearts nor do they keep us completely away from God. These are those sins that, although we can avoid, XVI explained to a group of children preparing for their First Communion years ago, venial sins are like dust that slowly dirties our homes. The venial sins are like that dust that, while it does not hurt the home, it doesn’t make it look clean. Similarly, we could say mortal sins are like a sand storm that buries our home and makes it almost unlivable.

Most of our sins are venial ones and, as the Catechism of the church indicates, we are not obliged to confess them before receiving communion. In fact, the Eucharist wipes these sins away (#1394). It is the mortal sins what we are called to confess before receiving communion.

We are called to actively participate in the Eucharist, not just with our prayers and songs, but also by receiving communion. It would be like going to a birthday party and not eating a piece of cake, which stands for the joy and unity of the guests and the birthday boy or girls. Small disagreements do not stop us from celebrating the birthday . Only a big fight, one which might have destroyed the friendship we might have had with the birthday boy or girl, would prevent it. Similarly, our venial sins do not prevent us from receiving communion, although mortal sins do.

Let us all participate in the Eucharist, fully and actively, recognizing our failures and, if needed, participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But also knowing that this is only a requisite if we have sinned mortally, since our venial sins are wiped away when we celebrate the Eucharist.

Infant Baptisms: Congratulations! We look forward to welcoming your child into the life of the Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation classes before having their child baptized. Please call the Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of your child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.

WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance with one of the priests.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in the Church, or anytime by appointment.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately in case of emergency, or to schedule a visitation for the homebound or for the hospitalized.
