The other day, the 50th anniversary of the

assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King,

I ran across an interesting article by Fr.

Dear, S. J., “The Last Words of Dr. King”.

On January 2008 John Dear was

nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

byArchbishop Desmond Tutu and is the

author of a soon to be published

autobiography, “A Persistent Peace”.

While a theology of the resurrection has serious social,

economic and political implications, strangely enough those

most alienated and marginalized in our society, namely

Blacks and Hispanics, have developed a powerful theology

of the cross, but sadly absent is the element of resurrection.

Need less to say, the theology comes from lived experience.

Some years ago while living and studying in Mexico I wrote

an article on Mexican spirituality that was published in the

National Catholic Reporter. The article was a reflection on

my observations of popular religious art, customs and

traditions. Like Fr. Dear, I found that poor folk resonate

much more with the story of Good Friday. The suffering

and dying of Jesus touches directly on the everyday

experience of the poor. In the article I also noted how

North American white churches tend either to remove the

suffering Jesus, replacing it with the Risen Christ, or just

leaving the cross empty.

Yet oddly, while both Black and Hispanic theologies

(Liberation theology) focus on the Exodus story and the

Cross, there is a sense of Easter, a sense of hope and

resurrection. Fr. Dear points out how for the people of El

Salvador there is a strong belief that the martyred

archbishop, Oscar Romero, continues to live in his people.

As the preface to the funeral Mass states concerning death

“life is not ended, it is simply changed”.

It seems to me that the timing of the death of Dr. King,

much like that of Oscar Romero, was no accident. Bishop

Romero died at the beginning of Holy Week and Dr. King

in Easter time. Incidentally, the attempt on the life of John

Paul II occurred also in the season of Easter. One

remembers the powerful and moving words of the last

sermon ever preached by Dr. King “I fear no man…for

I’ve been to the mountain top and mine eyes have seen the

glory of the Lord!”

What was it that gave courage to Dr. King, Oscar Romero,

and so many other prophets and martyrs of our times? It

was an abiding sense of sharing in Christ victory over sin

and death. In the words of Paul “O Death, where is your

victory?”.

During lent as one followed Jesus to Calvary, at each station

in that journey we prayed “by your Cross you have redeemed

the world”. It is the courage of people like Franz, Martin

and Oscar, who dare to take up the cross of Jesus that gives

hope that with the Lord all things are possible.

El otro día, en la celebración del 40 aniversa-rio del asesinato del Dr. Martin Luther King, me encontré con un artículo escrito por el Padre Dear, S. J., intitulado: “Las Ultimas Palabras del Dr. King”. El pasado enero, John Dear fue nominado para el Pre-mio Nobel de la Paz por el Arzobispo De-mond Tatu, autor de una autobiografía que muy pronto se publicará con el título, Una

Persistente Paz”.

Mientras que una teología de la resurrección tiene implica-ciones sociales, económicas y políticas, por extraño que pa-rezca, los más alienados y marginados de nuestra sociedad, llamados Negros e Hispano-parlantes, han desarrollado una poderosa teología de la cruz, pero tristemente, el elemento de resurrección se encuentra ausente. No es necesario men-cionar que la teología proviene de la experiencia vivida.

Hace algunos años, cuando estuve viviendo y estudiando en México, escribí un artículo sobre la espiritualidad del Mexi-cano, mismo que se publicó en el Reportero Católico Nacio-nal. El artículo era una reflexión sobre mis observaciones del arte religioso popular, sus costumbres y tradiciones. Igual que el Padre Dear, encontré que los pobres basan sus razonamientos en la historia del Viernes Santo. El sufri-miento y la muerte de Jesús toca directamente la experien-cia de la vida diaria de los pobres. En dicho artículo he mencionado también cómo las Iglesias de los blancos Nor-teamericanos tienden, ya sea a quitar al Jesús sufriente, reemplazándolo con el Cristo Resucitado, o simplemente, dejan la cruz vacía.

Sin embargo, extrañamente, mientras que las teologías de los Negros y los Hispano-parlantes (Teología de la Libera-ción), se enfocan en la historia del Exodo y la Cruz, existe en ellos un sentido de Pascua, un sentido de esperanza y resu-rrección. El Padre Dear subraya cómo, para la gente de El Salvador, existe una fuerte creencia de que el arzobispo mártir, Oscar Romero, continua viviendo en su pueblo. Es como el prefacio de la Misa funeral que declara que “la vida no termina, es simplemente un cambio”.

Me parece que el tiempo en que mueren el Dr. King, y Os-car Romero, no es accidental. El Obispo Romero murió al comienzo de la Semana Santa y el Dr. King murió en la Pas-cua. Incidentalmente, el atentado contra la vida del Papa Juan Pablo II ocurrió también en el tiempo de Pascua. Re-cordemos las poderosas y conmovedoras palabras del últi-mo sermón que predicó el Dr. King “No le temo a los hom-bres...porque he estado en lo más alto de la montaña y mis ojos han visto la gloria del Señor!”

Qué fue lo que le dio valor al Dr. King, a Oscar Romero y a muchos otros profetas y mártires de nuestros tiempos? Fue un ávido sentido de compartir en Cristo y su victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte. En las palabras de San Pablo: “Oh Muerte, dónde está tu victoria?”.

Durante la cuaresma, seguimos a Jesús en su camino al calvario, con cada estación de esa jornada que oramos “por tu Cruz has redimido al mundo”. Es el valor de la gente como Franz, Martin y Oscar, quienes se atreven a tomar la cruz de Jesús, que nos mantiene la esperanza de que con el Señor todas las cosas son posibles. ALELUYA!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION for the 2018-2019 school year

will be held on the following dates and times in the Parish Center:

April 24, 25, 26, 27

9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday April 28, 9:00 a.m.—12 Noon.

In order to register your child(ren) for religious education, your

family must be registered in the parish and your balance from last year

paid in full before these registration dates. We will take no registrations

during the above dates if you have a balance due to the church or you are

not registered.

The cost of religious education for the 2018-2019 school year during this

registration is a $45.00 book and materials fee per student and a $150.00

family tuition fee. If you have a child in a Confirmation or Eucharist class

there is an additional $25.00 sacrament fee. Due at time of registration is

your child’s book fee and $50.00 of the family tuition. After this registration

the family tuition rate will increase by $25.00 ($175.00). Any balance not

paid in full by August 1, 2018 will incur a $25.00 late fee. If you are

paying by cash, please bring small bills! We do not accept credit cards. If

you have any questions regarding registration, please contact the parish

Si tiene hijos que reci-birán la Confirmación o Primera Eucaristía en el año escolar 2017-2018, habrá una cuota adicional de $25.00 por niño. Infant Baptisms: Congratulations! We look forward to welcoming your child into the life of the Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation classes before having their child baptized. Please call the Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of your child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.

WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance with one of the priests.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in the Church, or anytime by appointment.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately in case of emergency, or to schedule a visitation for the homebound or for the hospitalized.
