HOME-BASED URBAN CONTAINER GARDENING
A HOUSEHOLD-BASED WASTE MANAGEMENT AND FOOD SECURITY SYSTEM
A CASE PRESENTATION ON
AN EFFECTIVE AND DOABLE CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION MEASURE
600 B.C.
MIGRATION AND URBANIZATION • 60% of the world’s population are already
living in urban centers / cities; • Agri-production will be impossible due to
compressed settlements; • Settlements will be vulnerable to natural &
man-made risks threatening livelihood, health & lives.
Major challenges in urban areas:
• High in-migration rates; • Dysfunctional environment, congestion; • Poverty, lack of opportunites; • Insecurity, rising crime rates; • Solid waste management; • FOOD SECURITY – access to safe, nutritious & affordable food.

URBAN CONTAINER
GARDENING (UCG)
URBAN CONTAINER GARDENING (UCG) A Food Production System considered as nutrition garden of a household.
A household activity that utilizes containers in growing fruits, vegetables and herbs for family consumption.
It is the cheapest and healthiest way of food production as it utilizes bio-wastes as sources of fertilizers in growing crops.
LEARN BY DOING…
Step 1. COMPOSTING
Step 2. BOTTLE PERFORATION
Step 3. GROWING MEDIA PREP.
