Just the other day, I took a moment to look up, and behold, it was Rosh HaShanah again. Time flies by. I bumped into an old acquaintance the other
day. He had been away from town for a while. ‘My oldest daughter starts college this week,” he noted. ‘My youngest is a junior in high school.” I remembered them both as infants; I had named them. I remem-bered them both as youngsters; I had watched the eldest become a Bat Mitzvah. I fumbled for words. “Where has the time gone?” We don’t take time to think about time. We ignore it as if there were an unlimited supply of the stuff, as if for us it was endless. But it is not endless. It is our most precious commodity. It is the floor on which our life dance is performed. It is the arena in which we play out our years. Each instant is significant; each year, each decade, all the more so. A pundit once wrote: To realize the value of one year: Ask a student who has failed a final exam. To realize the value of one month: Ask a mother who has given birth to a pre-mature baby. To realize the value of one week: Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one minute: Ask the person who has missed the train, bus, or plane. To realize the value of one second: Ask a person who has survived an accident. To realize the value of one millisecond: Ask the per-son who has won the silver medal. To realize the value of a lifetime, ask someone who recently sat shivah for a loved one. And so, we casually look up and it’s Rosh HaShanah again. And how very fortunate we as a people truly are. For we are the only people on the face of this planet whose religion encourages us to celebrate time as we do. For most people, time is marked with party
and gaiety, loud and raucous. It is as much a denial of time as a celebration. It is, I think, human nature to deny time, to mark it with acts of bravado. As if to say, what’s to worry about? I’m still here, older but strong and still flourish-ing. I am impervious to the effects of
time. My clock ticks slowly. I persevere. But such is not the Jewish way to view time. We are taught to mark its passage differently. We are taught to make the special times of our life sacred—to invest them with God’s spirit. To bring that which transcends us into our life passages. What a powerful message that can be to those who really hear it. We are taught to value time as a precious treasure, and to celebrate it in such a way as to elevate our lives. Think about it. Every Jewish life cycle event is marked with a sacred occasion. Baby naming or Brit Milah are occasions for celebration, but they are marked with elements of the sacred. A baby is not merely given a name, but is named after a biblical or Rabbinic figure or after a beloved relative. A baby is not merely named, but rather is brought into covenant with all the generations of our people. A newborn infant is already linked to 4,000 years of continuous tradition. How ennobling is that?! And now comes this time of year. We look up and behold it is Rosh HaShanah again. Time passes so quickly. And that is exactly why this new year season, this holy time is so very precious. We come to the sanctuary not to celebrate, but to cerebrate, to con-template, to reflect, to imagine ourselves anew, to recreate ourselves as only we might do that. These services ... this holy day season are not therapy ses-sions, but they can be a growing experience. They are not rocket science, but they can be just as up-lifting. They are not medicinal, but they can be part of a healing process. They are not magical, but they can be eye-opening. So how might we best prepare ourselves for this gift of

A committee is a group of people delegated to perform a function.
Going to your first meeting with a room
full of people can sometimes be hard. Some faces you recognize, others you don’t. You might smile and acknowledge one familiar face, but now, where do you sit? Is that seat taken next to the familiar person? Does someone you don’t recognize always sit in the same seat? This predicament should not stop you from checking out the 28 committees that cover Temple Beth Sholom. Committee chairs are always looking for new ideas and certainly an extra pair of hands.
Below is a list of committees, the chairperson for the committee and some short descriptions. This TBS Committee Guide will help you place those questions, suggestions, concerns and ideas to the appropriate contact person.
Board of Education – Sharon Wise – Assist the Hebrew School in fundraising or bring your talents into the classroom.
Hebrew School PTA – Jessica Malkin

Ways and Means – Andy Piscitelle – The perfect opportunity to help meet the budget needs.
Publicity Chair – Hinda Piscitelle (temporary) – If you are computer savvy, then this is your opportu-nity to get the word out to our neighboring towns.
Celebrating the Rabbi’s 25th Anniversary – Marni and Stuart Katz
Chesed Project – Diane Alderman – Contact and drive members to appointments.
Don’t see anything that fits the great idea that is floating in your head? No worries, there’s always room to form a new committee at Temple Beth Sholom that would also fit the needs of others in our community.
Don’t hesitate! Step up and join in all the fun. You will be saying “hello” to a lot more people sooner than you think.
As the Nike advertisement reads, Just Do It!
You have a lot to contribute to Temple Beth Sholom. Be a part of our growing and caring community.
Please contact the Temple Office at 203-288-7748 for the chairperson’s contact information. You will be glad you did!

time to introspect? How might we best take advantage of these ten days of teshuvah, of returning to the best that is within us? Perhaps by asking ourselves to main-tain focus during our worship together. Here are the questions to ask yourself as you sit in this sanctuary surrounded by family and friends or even if surrounded by strangers. On the holidays, Jewish people are not strangers; we are all family no matter how far from home we may be. For even if we are visitors here, we are accompa-nied to this sacred moment by all who came before us— by all who sat in synagogues in years past, in Denver or in Vilna, or in Minsk, New York, Granada, Firenzi, Sarajevo, Casablanca, or in Jo’berg, Rio, Cochin, or in Bagdad, Shanghai ... or even in Anatevka.
Here are your focus questions: How do I best experience myself as Jewish? As a member of this age-old people, what do I want from this Machzor, this prayer book? What do I want it to tell me? What words really speak to me and why? What memories or feelings or hopes or insights does the prayer I am now reading evoke in me? Can I let the words take me where they will? Do I resist and if so why? What does the music say to me? Can I hear the hopes and prayers of those who came before me rise on the memorable melodies? Can the music enter not just my ears, but also nourish my soul? What do I want
(Continued Rabbi from page 2) of the people sitting beside me? How can we help each other to experience the most from this time together? What do I want from God, whatever I conceive that which is inconceivable to be? And what do I have to offer in return? What mysteries do I try to unravel? Why is the process so daunting? In what ways have I succeeded? What keeps me from going further? What do I bring of my inner self to this service? How have I prepared myself for this worship experience? What do I want the experience to do with me or for me? What parts of my life need healing? When shall I begin the process? For what am I most grateful? Have I given thanks often enough? When shall I begin to appreciate what blessings are already mine to enjoy, instead of seeing only what I feel I am missing? And how shall I express my gratitude? What shall I do with my thankfulness? What dark places within need light? What angers need to be assuaged and put aside so that I may get on with life? What do I intend to accomplish in the New Year? In what ways will I act so as to benefit others? To whom must I apologize and make atonement? What habits or patterns will I change? What talents will I nurture? In what ways will I be stronger and more fulfilled when we gather as community this time next year? How will

The Mitzvah Committee is always looking for entertainment for our Arden House programs and once again caring members of our Temple
“Answered the Call”. On July 28th Rickey Kramer delighted the residents with many tunes on his trumpet. It was a treat for all that Rickey, who is 19 years old, volunteered to enter-tain at our get-together. How wonderful it was to have three generations of Temple members under one roof. Grandparents Irene & Sid Greenberg (Mitzvah Committee members) and parents Robin & Ken Kramer kvelled as Rickey played so beautifully. At the Friday services in July and August Andrea Joseph and her daughters Jessica and Sarah joined us and helped out serving and with some of the prayers. In August Jessica played the guitar as she, Sarah and a friend sang darling camp songs. The residents enjoyed listening to them while having their dessert of ice cream sundaes on pound cake as well as juicy water-melon. On August 25th Ellen Casper once again “Answered the Call” when she agreed to played the piano for a fun sing-a-long. Her talent and charm were such a pick me up for all in the room. It is amazing how the residents always remember the words to all the golden oldies. Food for the day was tuna and egg salad hors d’oeuvre, Jell-O molds made by Eve Schefts and Marian Stein followed by cream puffs, éclairs and watermelon. Thanks to Michelle Murphy for “Sharing Her Simcha”

The residents were thrilled to receive the beautiful bouquets that I was able to make and deliver to them. “Sharing Your Simcha” is another lovely way to “Answered the Call”. SISTERHOOD
Greetings again from the Men’s Club. Remember, the Club meets at the synagogue on the 2nd
Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. All male Temple members are automatically members of the Club, have received a dues statement, and are urged to mail their dues to the Club promptly.
I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer, and the Club extends its heartfelt wishes to everyone for a happy, healthy, prosperous, and sweet new year.
The Club was pleased to work with the Membership Committee on August 24th by preparing the breakfast for the prospective members Open-House event. Cur-rently the Club is preparing for another year of pro-gramming and charitable undertakings. You should have received or will soon receive your Temple calen-dar, compliments of the Club. Thank you to those who placed ads and who contributed by patron support.
Speaking of calendars, please mark your calendars now for an October 26th Sunday open breakfast and a December 25th Thursday open breakfast. Additionally, on November 16th at 1pm, the Club will honor its own Elliot Alderman as the “Keeper of the Flame” at a luncheon. The luncheon will be held at TBS this year. Area Temples will honor their “Keepers” here too, and each household will receive an invitation to the event.
An open event January live band dance party and a February Club paid-up dinner are also being planned. This year the Club is interested in a charitable under-taking and expects to work with the Temple’s Social Action Committee. Similarly, the Club is discussing creation of a Holocaust memorial for permanent dis-play at the Temple. The Club welcomes ideas. More programming is also planned, including the World Wide Wrap and the Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle pro-ject. Pay attention for Club event publicity.
While I have your attention, and though perhaps inap-propriate in this space, I would like to urge congre-gants to remember the Temple when preparing wills and when charitable giving. (For instance, the Club it-self gives an annual donation of $2,500). As immediate past Financial Secretary I have seen how increased operating costs, shrinking membership, and increased financial need among members have strained the Temple’s budget like never before. I apologize for that digression.
“Now, for something completely different”, I want to extend the Club’s wishes for a speedy recovery to Al Harary, and extend a congratulations to Marty Rudnick on his recent nuptials.
Shalom, Steven C. Sosensky.

Temple members have been busy this summer volunteering their time for several social action projects. Our Chesed project volunteers
continued to care for the members of our congregation and of our community, who have long-term health needs. They have been taking TBS members to medical appointments and treatment. Our soup kitchen volunteers have served dinner at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen on the fourth Sunday of the month; we have made contributions of food staples to the Hamden Food Bank; and our fruit volunteers have brought fresh fruit to the New Haven Home Recovery shelter. On July 25 at a special Shabbat evening service, we were joined by our adopted social worker, Charlene Rigsbee, as we renewed our commitment to work through Covenant to Care for Children to provide critical material needs that help stabilize the living situations of children and protect them from abuse and neglect. That evening we presented Charlene with thirty-five backpacks filled with supplies for the start of school. Fourteen of these backpacks were specially selected for children in Charlene’s caseload; the remainder are to be distributed to other children in the caseload of the Department of Children and Families. members contributed to the overwhelming success of this effort. Now it’s time to begin thinking about the fall. There is no way for me to ask each of you personally, but I know there must be many more of you who would like to get involved with the Chesed project or the soup kitchen. Please let me know if you are interested. We will also be collecting food for the Hamden Food Bank before Kol Nidrei. This is an opportunity for all of us to make a difference by helping to stock the shelves with staples such as pasta and sauce, cereals, peanut butter, canned or dry milk, rice, canned stews and chili, and tuna fish. Finally (for now) please consider becoming a literacy volunteer. By tutoring in the New Haven public schools for just one hour per week, you can help a child learn to read and thus have a tremendous impact on his or her future success. On September 21, we will have a short, informative program featuring Brenda Brenner from the Jewish Coalition for Literacy and some of our previous TBS literacy volunteers, who will talk about their very positive experiences. I hope to see many of you there that morning beginning at 11:15AM. Diane Kaplan 248-8319 evenings [email protected]

Is the Internet Jewish? I was watching an episode of Doctor Who called the Forest of the Dead. Doctor Who is an alien, the last of his people. He travels through time and space and solves problems and rights wrongs. In this epi-sode, he comes across the universe's biggest library containing every book ever written until the 51st century. The library is somewhat sentient and has the collective knowledge of the evolved “Internet”. At some point the Doctor is threatened and rather than explain why he should be the last person to be confronted, he suggests that the other entity look him up in the library. This library is the ultimate memorial book of all who are alive or died. It has a Jewish soul; nothing and no one is forgotten. Last July when I started to populate our new TBS
website, I was deeply disappointed that our previ-ous host managed to lose our old content, including all of Rabbi Scolnic’s sermons. Rabbi Scolnic gra-ciously provided copies of what he could find and they were added under the Rabbi’s Corner. During one of my recent convoluted searches of the Internet, I found six of his old sermons from 2000-2001 that I have now added to the site. I also found TBS pictures from that period and those were added to the Picture Gallery. We read and save pictures so that we can remember and our website helps in its own way.
And… remember to use GoodSearch on the Home page.

I use the time that flows so swiftly? How will I learn to make time sacred? Time waits for no one. Treasure every moment you have. Use these days to introspect and to reflect on just who you have become, and on the who you want to be, and on the journey you will take to get there. May our thoughts and prayers as individuals and as a holy congregation strengthen our personal resolve and light the way for us as we make our lives a sacred journey.

12th graders. We held our annual pool party in August at the Bartell residence. We discussed upcoming activities for this year. They will include, setting up for the High Holiday Services, Regional Boat Cruise, Sukkot under the stars, hiking up Sleeping Giant, bowling, ice skating, movie nights and so much more. We are always looking for new members. If you would like more information please email me.
If you would like to make a donation to the Tiby Mathog Fund to help defray the cost of Regional and International Conventions, USY teens in grades 9th - 12th will benefit with scholarships for future events.
We hope you will help support TBS Youth Groups by ordering or renewing your favorite magazine subscrip-tions online and sharing our site with your friends and relatives. Our “Online Fundraising Store” is at tinyurl.com/37zuym — With your help, we are sure to earn the funds needed to keep Kadima and USY going this year! We appreciate your support.

TROOP 41 BSATROOP 41 BSA Congregation B’nai Jacob 75 Rimmon Road Woodbridge CT 06525
Dear Congregants, Where can your son meet new friends, gain an appreciation for nature and the outdoors while learning new talents and passions, and develop leadership skills in a constructive and supportive environment? In Boy Scout Troop 41 - the only synagogue-sponsored scout Troop in the New Haven area. Our Troop meets every Tuesday night at Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge. Our first meeting and “Open House” will be September 16. We are now recruiting boys age 11 and older (age 10 if entering 6th grade) who would like to join other scouts from the Hamden and New Haven area and get involved in camping, hiking, canoeing and other fun and exciting activities.
In a society where it’s easy to get caught up in the excesses of the modern world, scouting offers a real alternative to video games and MTV. It emphasizes core human values and produces young men who are grounded in their sense of self and community. I have watched my own son grow and mature as part of Troop 41, and can honestly say that he would not be the person he is today were it not for the positive influence of scouting. Our Troop is fortunate to have a very dedicated and experienced team of adult leaders and a fantastic group of boys. As Scoutmaster, I can assure you that the Troop is nondenominational and inclusive of all boys while still fostering the ideals of the Jewish faith. If your son might be interested in joining us, please give me a call at 288-1832 or [email protected]. Sincerely, Lawrence Lefland Fellow Beth Sholom congregant & Scoutmaster Troop 41
