Be Filled with The Spirit!

Near the close of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he said: Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every

opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to

debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with

psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name

of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

(Ephesians 5:15-21)

When God freed us from sin, He freed us to live in the new way of the Spirit.

When one becomes a Christian, we don’t expect perfection, but a beautiful

metamorphosis begins. As we submit to God, God’s Spirit transforms us

more and more into the image of Christ.

How does all that happen? How can we be filled with the Spirit? Ephesians

5 is extremely helpful! The larger context in Ephesians (5:15-6:18) begins

and ends with the reminder that we live in an evil world. Paul encourages us

to be careful how we live (5:15), and to put on the full armor of God in order

to take a stand against the devil’s schemes (6:11).

Paul says, Don’t get drunk on wine; instead, be filled with the Spirit. Be

filled with the Spirit is an imperative verb followed by five participles

describing what we can do in order to be filled with the Spirit. All of these

phrases say something about our relationship with God and with one another

in the body of Christ. From Paul’s vantage point, life together is such an

important ingredient to living in the Spirit. Here are the five participles—

verbal forms that modify the imperative verb to be filled with the Spirit:

Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. When

we engage in worship, we praise God, but we also speak to one another

about the promises of God. Something happens when we do that. We quit

being an audience, and we become a community of faith. Singing and

making music in your heart to the Lord. There is something about

heartfelt praise that brings fresh air to our stale lives. Always giving thanks

to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. As we surrender to

one another, and serve one another, we become more and more like Jesus.

How are we filled with the Spirit? By speaking to one another, by praising

God (singing and making music in our hearts to the Lord), by giving thanks,

and by submitting to one another! May we be filled with the Spirit of God!
