Biking and micro-mobility (such as e-scooters) are increasingly critical to the success of Hamilton’s multi-modal transport network, our ability to grow, how our residents want the city to function and our wellbeing. Our population is growing and if this means a lot more cars (as it has in the past), it will mean more congestion, more deaths on our roads, reduced wellbeing, more pollution and a city no-one wants to live in anymore. We’ve heard from past engagement that we don’t drive because we love driving: it’s because other transport options in Hamilton, like biking and e-scootering, are less convenient and more dangerous than they could or should be. We have clear direction from strategies like our Biking Plan to improve our city for biking and micro-mobility. And recent public engagement shows strong support for biking and micro-mobility from Hamiltonians. BIKING AND MICRO-MOBILITY PROGRAMME PROJECT SUMMARY

We are drawing on what we’ve already heard about biking and micro-mobility from

the community and working closely with partners and stakeholders

(e.g. un-gap the map and many others) to develop a long list of ideas to improve biking

and micro-mobility in Hamilton.

A business case process is being used to develop the programme and

is expected to conclude in late 2020/early 2021. After this we can move to implementing the highest priority projects

from the programme.

The programme will include actions for infrastructure, education, policy and

regulations, and end-of-trip facilities. We expect to start some things immediately, while more complex actions will require further study. The project will inform the

Long Term Plan, Biking Connectivity Programme, Eastern Pathways and other

projects and strategies.

To act in a coordinated way that gets value for our money, we are preparing a

city-wide overarching programme for biking and micro-mobility. This will include a long-term strategic network plan and prioritised

programme of projects.

We’ll then develop this into a short list of different programme options for people to consider, weigh up and give us feedback.

Ultimately ending up with a prioritised programme of infrastructure interventions

and supporting initiatives.

Elected members, Hamilton City Council staff, stakeholders and the community will be involved at key points throughout the project.

We aim to have the community feel well informed, that they’ve had opportunity to have

their say and know what will happen next.
