A Brief History
Of Galilee
The year was 1888. It was a hot Virginia Beach summer, in the middle of July. On a certain cottage porch on the oceanfront at 18th street, a small group of vacationers gathered for Sunday morning worship - led by the Rev. Beverly Dandridge Tucker, who would later become Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. As they talked about things that mattered most in life, they decided that "within 3 years should be erected a chapel or place of public worship for all Christian faiths, regardless of creed." The Norfolk-Virginia Beach Railroad contributed $500 to build a "Union Chapel" at the waterfront and 18th Street to be used jointly by denominations. On Sundays, a Catholic Mass was held early, Presbyterians gathered at 9:30, Episcopalians at 11:00, Baptists at 3:30 p.m. and Methodists held evening prayer at 7:30 p.m. When other denominations built their own churches and moved away, Episcopalians purchased the chapel in 1896, and named it "Galilee by the Sea." In the early years around the turn of the century, Galilee recorded 128 baptized members, eight teachers and 54 "scholars." In 1903, Galilee called its first rector, The Rev. Edward P. Miner, and became an Episcopal parish church.
In 1926, beach erosion and growth required the small frame church to be moved and a new brick and wood church was built on the same 18th Street property as a memorial to Bishop Tucker. The original frame structure was relocated behind the new church and named Tucker Hall. Thirty years later, the growth of both Galilee and Virginia Beach required another move - to our present location. The cornerstone of today's Galilee was laid at 40th Street and Pacific Avenue on July 8, 1956. A renovation program was completed in 1988, adding a new chapel and a large parish hall. In April of 2002, a new addition to the facility was dedicated, nearly doubling the church's physical space with a large multi-purpose room, foyer and youth and childcare facilities. God has richly blessed Galilee Church over the more than one hundred years of her history, and today our vision remains strong and heartfelt: to be a Christ-centered community bringing the renewal of Christ to a world in need.

WARDENS REPORT Blessings to the Galilee Family! By the time you read this we will have finished our 2014 Annual Meeting and the corresponding election of four new Vestry members. It is always a thrill to see how God works in bringing the Vestry together. A group of people with unique backgrounds and different demographics quickly form a cohesive group that works aggressively to fulfill God's will for Galilee. Please pray for this year's Vestry team as we seek to lead Galilee well. We will have our annual Vestry retreat in March using that time to get to know each other and to firm up our mission for 2014. Please continue to pray for Galilee, its clergy, and its lay leadership. We value your prayers, and we hope to serve the Lord with excellence in 2014! Best regards, Robbie Berndt Senior Warden
FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, Many years ago the Lord introduced me to Father Nigel Mumford, and I am grateful. As many of you know, God called Father Nigel to a ministry of prayer and healing, first in Connecticut and then upstate New York. I have enjoyed and appreciate both Fr. Nigel's friendship and his expertise when it comes to prayer. It is a tangible blessing to Galilee that Fr. Nigel and his wife Lynn have relocated to Virginia Beach, and now call Galilee home. Although the Mumfords will continue their ministry of visiting churches across the country, often leading weekend retreats on healing prayer, they will also be involved at Galilee when they are home. Fr. Nigel has volunteered to make hospital visits, to see parishioners for prayer and to be involved in our prayer ministry--and he will participate as able in Sunday morning worship. As Lynn and Nigel settle in, I encourage you to make time to connect and get to know them both.
February is a full month at Galilee--and I encourage you to have a look inside this newsletter and get acquainted with all that's going on. May the Lord bless and keep you in all His ways this month.
Warmly,
Father Buchanan+

CAROLING UPDATE
Dear Friends at Galilee Church,
Thank you from my heart for
including me in your Christmas Carol
presentation.
As I live alone, having recently lost
my dear, sweet little "Catey" (yellow
lab) to cancer, I have been
somewhat depressed lately. The
carolers boosted my spirits, giving
me considerable pleasure -
especially the two little ones who
sang right along...and brought me a
plate of delicious cookies.
Many thanks to everyone in the
group. I think it was wonderful that
you would take the time and effort to
cheer an old timer in the spirit of
Christmas, who has no local family
and little excitement going on in my
life.
Needless to say, "YOU MADE MY
DAY!"
My sincere appreciation.

Food Pantry Report Thanks to everyone who helped make this an extremely successful Food Pantry Drive! From one can of tuna to cash/check donations (thanks W.O.W.) it all came together to help a lot of people that are going through a tough time. We collected approximately 16,350 servings of food. That works out to over 4,000 meals! INCREDIBLE! The food is being picked up by the Eastern Shore Chapel Food Pantry this month. The City of Va. Beach Holiday Project - We received the names of 10 families. In a big white laundry basket with a big Christmas bow on the front that was piled high with everything from the turkey to dessert and lunches and snacks for the kids. Every family also received a $35.00 Gift Certificate to Kroger and a Bible. A special thank you to Harris Teeter for the bags that made it all happen. As always, if you have any questions or want to see the spreadsheet please call LeMoine Jones at 428-1780 or [email protected].

The Holy Gift
“Where is it that you might give the gift of life to another? It is one thing
to mail packages or put presents under a tree. It is something altogether different to enable someone else to be whole or to thrive, or to reach some new potential, to know joy or comfort or to have new life." From Bishop Hollerith's Christmas message.
A small group of Galilee members experienced the miracle of 'holy gifts' the bishop referred to when they became aware of the needs of one of our long-standing senior members. She said she had put off doing work on her house for a long time. With her permission, faith works coalition volunteers visited her, did an evaluation of the house and voted to assist in making the needed renovations.
It was a great example of team work with the property owner, faith works men and women, neighbors and Galilee friends working together. Miracles were witnessed from the beginning to the end and everyone considered it a privilege to be involved in bringing joy and comfort to this special person.
When all the work was done, she told her neighbor that thank you would never be enough for all the love that was shown to her and all the work that everyone did.
Lifetime friendships have developed from this humble beginning. In fact, one of the faith works volunteers stopped by to see the homeowner re-cently and she told him there was no way she could ever thank them enough. After a couple of hugs, he said: "just letting us get in to your home and to be part of your life was thanks enough."
Thanks be to God!
