Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

When we’re depressed or feeling blue, this prayer from Padre Pio is a way to reach out  Margaret Rose Realy, Obl.OSB

If you find yourself in a state of darkness, the key is "to reach."

The small framed unsigned print reads “Reach up as high as you can today, and God will reach down the rest of the way.” It’s my go-to quote for those mes when I feel an emo onal darkness—depression—coming on. For many of us this darkness is a famil-iar not-so-good old friend, the Black Dog men oned by Sir Winston Churchill—or seasonal affec ve disorder. The DSM (Diagnos c and Sta s cal Manual of Mental Disorders) has clinical defini ons for depression, and there is as well the spiritual darkness that St. John of the Cross writes about in Dark Night of the Soul. However you’ve come to a depressive state, and for whatever history brought you there, the key in both of those dark mes is to reach. The state of darkness and depression is not a void. It is a space filled with insights that we are momentarily blinded to. When we try to go it alone, we are o en too wearied to keep from going under, instead succumbing to the waves of hopelessness.

To reach is not an intui ve movement when psychologically and/or spiritually sinking into depression. Even though we’ve been taught that to despair is to turn our backs to God—which is a sin—there is another element to despairing that is some mes over-looked. It comes from the Rule of St. Benedict, “In all things may God be glorified.”

In a recent confession, when I was in a season of depression, the priest gave me a very specific penance. I was to read about Jesus walking on stormy seas, and Peter’s fear in Ma hew 14:30-31. Then reflect, specifically, on that moment when Peter is desperately reaching out to Our Lord—that second just before Jesus takes his hand.

It was a dark and doubt-filled moment for Peter, whose faith had faltered. It was also an intui ve response to a person physically drowning — reaching out, trying to grasp at anything to save his life.

Father gave me imagery by medita ng on and fulfilling that penance; a metaphor to psychologically and spiritually reach for the hand of Christ. I was surprised by how quickly the ins nct to survive spiritually soon matched the desire to live physically when exhausted and in deep waters.

Assured that the Lord had taken my hand so I will not drown, I o en read this prayer, some mes three mes through!

Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have you present so that I do not forget you. You know how easily I abandon you. Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak, and I need your strength, so that I may not fall so o en. Stay with me, Lord, for you are my life, and without you, I am without fervor. Stay with me, Lord, for you are my light, and without you, I am in darkness. Stay with me, Lord, to show me your will. Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear your voice and follow you. Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love you very much, and always be in your company. Stay with me, Lord, if you wish me to be faithful to you. Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consola on for you, a nest of love. Amen. ~St. Pio of Pietrelcina, Prayer A er Communion Depression is a ba le, and for some of us a lifelong cross to bear. In bearing it as best we can while reaching up and out for help, we are led in to a deeper maturity of faith—which like most virtues, is not easily won.

W końcu poprośmy Stwórcę, by pozwolił nam dobrze i po Bożemu przeżyć kolejny dzień urlopu. Zakończ dobrze dzień. Modlitwa przed snem! W ciągu roku często brakuje nam czasu, by spokojnie i w dobrej atmosferze pogłębić swoją wiedzę religijną. Wolne chwile podczas urlopu to doskonała okazja, by przysiąść nad dobrą książką katolicką, by wziąć do ręki wartościowe czasopismo. Nic! Nawet upragniony urlop. Michał Wałach WWW.PCH24.PL

ON ENTERTAINING STRANGERS Copyright 2019 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

There are various interpreta ons of Hebrews 13:2. Per my New American Bible for Catholics, it translates to “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.” Nice. When it comes to this par cular chapter and verse, however, I favor the King James Bible message: "Be not forge ul to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." I first came upon this passage in 1995 while taking a year-long calligraphy class. Our instructor gave us an assignment each month, and certain short quotes to u lize in pu ng to paper the par cular skills he was teaching during the preceding weeks. I chose Hebrews 13:2. My work was non-impressive and to this day is stashed away in my por olio that in turn is stashed away beneath my bed upstairs. The words, though, s ll speak to me. And they especially speak to me today as I consider the first reading. Here, Abraham is si ng at his tent entrance on a hot day when he sees three men standing nearby. He says to the apparent leader, “Sir, if I may ask you this favor…Let me bring you a li le food, that you may refresh yourselves…" When the strangers acknowledge him, Abraham asks his wife Sarah to bake rolls for the visitors. Then he directs a servant to prepare a choice steer, and Abraham gets some curds and milk and sets the en re feast before the visitors. As they enjoy it, they ask of Sarah’s whereabouts. Abraham says she is in the tent. Then one of the three--again, apparently the leader--answers, saying, “I will surely return to you about this me next year, and Sarah will then have a son." Hearing

this predic on of a miraculous birth (as both he and Sarah are advanced in years), Abraham knows that the stranger is the Lord. This puts a whole new spin on Hebrews 13:2, no? (as in, "Be

not forge ul to entertain strangers, for thereby some have

entertained God unawares"). I’ve entertained a few strangers over

the years, and I feel good about that. To my mind, the most

memorable encounter happened years back. My wife and I were

housecleaning--Godspell album cranked to max--when a couple of

Jehovah Witnesses stopped by. We invited them in, served them

lemonade and talked about the faith (in truth, I don’t think they

knew what hit them). Other mes, though, I’ve been less

hospitable. Those mes, I’ve been more like the Levite or the priest

in last week’s Gospel. You know. The guys who crossed to the

opposite side of the road when they saw a man in need. And in

looking at today’s Gospel, I’d have to say that more mes than I’d

like to admit, I’ve been Martha, not Mary. In my defense, I argue

that somebody has to be Martha. In my defense, I argue that

Martha is serving God in her own way. And yet I hear Jesus

speaking to me just the same: "John, John, you are anxious and

worried about many things…” Busted. But on my best days,

though, I hope to keep entertaining angels unawares. Or maybe

Jesus himself.
