(With one exception this year, November 18.) These reviews are quite different from book clubs. There is no expectation that audience members have all read the book to be reviewed. You may come simply to find out if you would like to read the book or you may just want to know more about its subject matter. The reviewers are selected based on their expertise and experience on the topic of the book. Library Foundation Corner by Betty McCauley, Board Member

This is a sample of an outstanding book in the library. It is The Best Gift: The History of the Corvallis‐Benton County Public Library, by Thomas C. McClintock, retired professor of history at Oregon State University and longtime volunteer in our library. The title comes from a 1963 editorial by Robert C. Ingalls in the Corvallis Gazette‐Times: “ And the best gift we can give to our children besides first rate schools is a first rate library.” This book is itself a gift to the community, a chronicle of the years of development and the efforts of uncounted volunteers and professional staff dedicated to an outstanding library. Thanks to Tom’s meticulous research we have the whole story, even going back to the 17th century! As he said to a GT writer, “My training, you put things in context.” So he gives us in‐depth understanding of our culture of learning. However, this isn’t a book to read and simply shelve. It’s a resource to keep at hand, to dip into to see how our library grew one step at a time. Our history goes back to the 1800’s when the women of the Coffee Club’s first purpose was to have coffee ready for volunteer firemen after they had fought a fire. They made the coffee, but at the same time the women established a Coffee Club Library. The firemen, in gratitude to the club, gave a party for the benefit of the Library. The Coffee Club eventually became the Corvallis Woman’s Club that worked toward the concept of a free public library. They anticipated the need of a building, so in 1921 the Woman’s Club made the $1,000 down payment on the lot at 7th and Monroe. It had a house on it to be temporary space for the library. Then being enterprising

women, they gave dances, card parties, concerts, and other fund raisers to make the payments. Their efforts brought out community support with more funds. A long GT editorial was headed with “HURRAH FOR THE WOMEN.” However it was not until 1930 that the City Council, under pressure, finally put a bond measure in the general election for $25,000 to build a library. It passed with 60% voter approval. Within weeks Doyle and Associates, a Portland architectural firm with Pietro Belluschi as its architect, contacted Corvallis about building its library. The firm was experiencing the effect of the 1929 crash and to survive they were aggressively seeking new commissions. The firm was accepted and the building was completed by November 1931. The Corvallis Woman’s Club was on the stage in Corvallis High School when the library was dedicated. Tom goes on with chapters on the phenomenal growth of the library, of its two additions, about the relationship of the city and county, of coming to terms with funding and services in rural Benton County including Philomath, Alsea and Monroe. Chapters are devoted to the final acceptance of a library district, to the challenges of the age of the e‐book plus the many reference services now online. The last chapter is a look into entering the Twenty‐first Century. Thank you, Tom, for a great book! It is a tribute to all the volunteers and the professionals on the staff that pursued nothing but the best library! Now it is up to us to continue as volunteers to support it!

September 7th Labor Day

Library Director’s Message Our Library is blessed with many long time volunteers who have

served in many different capacities. One of the most remarkable is

retired OSU History Professor Tom McClintock, who served as Library

Board Chair during the 1992 expansion. Tom and his wife Patty have both

given thousands of hours to our Library. His greatest accomplishment for our

Library (other than the addition) was the research, writing, and publication of The Best Gift,

a history of our library written a few years ago. In this issue Betty McCauley (another long

term volunteer and the first President of the Friends of the Library) devotes her Library

Foundation article to the book, and our Library’s history. Copies of this wonderful volume

are for sale at the Corvallis Library in the Library Foundation display area.

This September and October we are loaded with events to appeal to writers and readers of all varieties. Of course, you might expect that from your local library, but we’re also secretly trying to inspire you to take on the ultimate challenge we’ve come to venerate, National Novel Writing Month in November. Alice Hyde spends her days immersed in the finer points of the English language. She is an editor for the Office of the Legislative Counsel in Salem, and the work she and her colleagues do affects every Oregonian every day. As Alice described her job to me, it sounded both fascinating and extremely challenging. Talk about detail-oriented! During the 6-month-long 2015 legislative session, more than 2600 bills were introduced; 800+ were enacted. All passed through the Legislative Counsel’s office, some several times. (And that doesn’t count the bills that were proposed but never actually introduced.) I hadn’t realized it before, but it’s not the elected representatives and senators who actually write the legislation, it’s the Counsel’s office. The permanent staff of 50 is about half lawyers and half editors, publication specialists, and indexers. The lawyers make sure that the bill is constitutional and couched in appropriate legal terms; the editorial staff make sure the language is clear, internally consistent, and correct in all details. * During the session, it’s a high-pressure job with short turn-around times and lots of deadlines. There is so much extra work that additional temporary editors must be added to the staff. That’s how Alice first joined the Counsel’s Office, and they were apparently impressed with her work, because they

hired her full-time. The permanent staff has plenty to do the rest of the biennium. Among other things, they must publish a new version of the Oregon Revised Statutes, incorporating all the changes and new laws. (And that’s a tall order; it runs to 21 volumes and 838 chapters.) Alice has had a fascination with language since her teens, when she decided she wanted to learn Old English. Someone told her that she should start by learning German, because the languages are so closely related, so she studied German in high school. At the University of Oregon she

majored in English, but took so many classes in medieval languages and history that she received degrees in both English and Medieval Studies. Alice grew up in Corvallis and got her first library card when she was 2 years old. She volunteered at the Eugene Public Library while she was in college, and has been a CBCPL volunteer for more than 3 years. Her current job is in Adult Services, as a Collection Development Aide, and the second-floor staff loudly sing her praises. This young woman is not just a word-nerd; she has excellent computer skills too, so she can do many extra tasks to assist the librarians, such as formatting documents and creating sophisticated spreadsheets for scheduling. When not working or volunteering, Alice enjoys knitting, cooking, hiking, and – of course – reading. We’re grateful to have someone with her exceptional skills and abilities on our volunteer staff!

Join the Corvallis‐Benton County Public Library for a special car‐free themed storytime and celebratory parade to Pedalpalooza, a Car‐Free Festival also in Riverfront Park. Families are invited to bike, walk, skate, and/or scoot to the Festival following alternative transportation themed stories, songs and a craft. All ages are welcome and no registration is required. Little ones with trikes, scooters, etc. are encouraged. Helmets are required for participants 16 years of age and younger, but eve‐ryone is encouraged to come out and demonstrate safe car‐free behavior.

Pedalpalooza, a Car‐Free Festival at River‐front Park, is an advance celebration of Interna‐

tional Car‐Free Day, during which people around the world commit to going car‐free for one full day. The Festival will include food, fun, information on being smart and safe while car‐free, and more.

Pedalpalooza and Car‐Free Day are sponsored by the Cor‐vallis Sustainability Coalition as well as many other local busi‐nesses and organizations including the City of Corvallis and the Corvallis‐Benton County Public Library.
