Friends of the Library Corner
Library Foundation Corner by Be y McCauley, Board Member
A fond 2017 memory at the Library that I have is from one me, when wandering through the children’s room, I saw a mother finding books that she could read with her Spanish speaking children. I didn’t understand their words, but their delight in the books they could read together was obvious. It is one of many reasons the Corvallis‐Benton County Public Library Founda on is so grateful for the willing response to the annual appeal. Thank you, generous contributors, again in 2017. This scene is just one example of the 624,000 library visits in the 2016–2017 opera ng year. Patrons checked out 1.77 million items and par cipated in story hours for toddlers and book reviews for the whole community. There were a variety of
presenta ons a ended by 53,000 people. The Library accommodates every interest for every age and it takes our four county library branches to contain all of these programs. Your gi s supplement the tax support for all the materials and technologies, as well as books, and the upcoming capital projects needed. Our Director, Ashlee Chavez, states it succinctly: “I am so thankful for the con nued support to The Library Founda on and the con nued belief in our mission at the public library. Every gi helps make a difference in our community. I believe one of the biggest reasons our library is successful is because of the overwhelming level of support we have from our users.”

I am grateful for this opportunity to say thank you to all the people and community groups who volunteered at the Corvallis‐Benton County Public Library in 2017. We have an extremely ac ve and robust volunteer program, due to extraordinary community volunteer dedica on and heroic staff efforts to provide outstanding service with regard to materials, programming and service. Our volunteers are a vital part of the daily ac vi es of each of our libraries in Alsea, Monroe, Philomath, and Corvallis. You keep our shelves dy and in order, you check things in, hunt for “holds” (one of the busiest services we provide), process new books, mend old books, and create and maintain kits of “things” for checkout. You make cra items, deliver books to homebound folks, display books, clean toys, read in English and Spanish to families, set up, clean up, and contain chaos and promote joy at events for kids of all ages. You greet the public, give art tours, maintain facili es, landscape, wear costumes, water plants, recycle, enter data, research, develop
collec ons, post flyers, clean the public computers, and pick up at the end of the day. You bring your therapy dogs for kids to read to and you help us deliver a dynamic summer reading program. You even subs tute for each other! We could not do it without you and we would not want to, because you bring joy and support to our communi es. Our library volunteers donated over 15,000 hours in 2017. This doesn’t even include many volunteer hours given by the Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Library, or the Library Founda on!

What is Cultural Appropriation?
Thursday, February 1, 2018
6:00 PM ‐ 7:30 PM Main Mee ng Room
Issues of cultural appropria on and iden ty are complicated. Power dynamics influence who benefits from certain cultural experience, and ‐ given the global nature of our world ‐ parts of our ind‐ividual and cultural iden es are shaped by cultures other than our own. How do we make sense of this and what effect does it have on us as individuals and as Oregonians? This is the focus of “What Is Cultural Appropria on?” a free conversa on with Surabhi Mahajan.
