Book of the Month Activities
Lexile: 540Target Skill: Cause & Effect
Pre Reading Activities
1. Show the title of the book and discuss what is shown. Have students make predictions about the book using the picture on the
cover. (If you plan on doing the visualization activity during reading do not go on a picture walk of the book)
2. Go over the meaning of cause and effect. Have students make predictions to what could have caused the girl on the cover to get
stripes. * This can be done on chart paper. Write the effect on one side (The main character being covered in stripes) and each student
could go to the board and write their prediction as to what caused the character to be covered in stripes.
During Reading Activities
1. While reading the story stop at various point to have students make visualizations. The students can draw and write what they
think Camilla looks like before showing them the pictures. (Graphic organizer included)
2. While reading ask students higher level guided questions. Example: Explain what the author means by "Today she was fretting
more than usual." * You can write the questions on post-its and place them on the
pages for when you're reading the book to the students.

Book of the Month Activities
Lexile: 540Target Skill: Cause & Effect
Post Reading Activities1. Students can use a plot diagram to identify the different parts
of the story.2. Find cause and effect relationships throughout the story. Write
each cause and each effect on a separate index card so that each student has their own card. Then have the students go on a
scavenger hunt to find the person with the matching cause or effect.
* You could make the cause and effect cards different colors if your students are struggling with this skill to make it easier for the
students while on the scavenger hunt.
