First, we need tools. There is a trowel to dig holes. There is a watering can.
Vegetables are plants. They need water to grow.
What might we need for a
backyard vegetable garden?
Let’s go outside and look.

Second, let’s look at the soil. Soil is dirt. Rich soil has nutrients. Poor soil does not. Nutrients are like vitamins that make plants healthy.
Rich soil is often dark because it is also damp.
Compost can be mixed
into poor soil to add
nutrients. Compost can be
made of grass clippings,
dead leaves, and food scraps.
It sits in a bin long enough
to rot. That might seem
yucky to us, but not to plants!
These scraps will become compost.

Third, we find seed packages. Let’s grow carrots, celery, and tomatoes.
There are lots of seeds to
choose from!
Fourth, let’s look at the garden plot. The vegetables will be planted in rows. This gives plants space to grow well.

Now that the tools, soil,
seeds, and plot are
ready, it is time to plant.
Carrot seeds go into the
ground. They begin to grow.

Now spring has become summer. Some days are sunny. Some days are rainy. The vegetable plants

Sometimes weeds grow in the garden. They need to be taken out. Weeds crowd the vegetables.
The vegetables
are finally ready
to be picked!
You might wear
gloves to pull
carrots from
the ground. Weeds like gardens as much as vegetables do!
Remember to cook only when a grownup can help you. Never use a sharp knife or turn on a stove unless a grownup says it’s okay.

Let’s fix the fresh vegetables for dinner.
Your family might help you cook a special vegetable dish.
Directions1. Prepare instant rice as directed on box. Set aside.
2. Chop carrots and celery into small bits and put into one bowl.
3. Chop tomatoes into small bits and put into the second bowl.
4. In a wok or large nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil until very hot.
5. Add carrots and celery; stir-fry for about 5 minutes until tender.
6. Add the tomatoes and soy sauce. Stir-fry another 2 or 3 minutes.
7. Add rice. Stir and cook another minute.
8. Serve on plate.

3 carrots
2 stalks of celery
3 ripe tomatoes
2 teaspoons soy sauce
