A Year of Joy

Dear Friends,

Blessings and joy to each of you and to your families and friends!

In Pope Francis’s latest letter, Evangelii Guadium (The Joy of the Gospel), our Holy Father calls us to live the Word of God found in scripture. In accordance with our Dominican charism, we want to live and preach the Word with JOY in all that we do here at SCA. In fact, Saint Dominic is often called the joyful friar because he expressed such jubilant enthusiasm for the gospel wherever he went.

As we continue our anniversary celebration, we are delighted to share with you some of the many reasons we have to be filled with joy. Of particular note, we provide:

A look into our new Early Education Program

A recap of our 125th Anniversary Celebration and information on upcoming events

We are also delighted to recognize and thank our generous benefactors and volunteers who share their time, talent, and treasure to ensure the success of St. Catherine’s and our cadets. You are truly our partners in education, and we could not do it without you. Thank you for the joy you bring to our students and to our school!

We invite you to visit us this year as we continue to celebrate our 125th Anniversary!

Know of our loving prayers!

With a grateful heart,

Sister Johnellen Turner, OP Administrator/Principal

Esprit de Corps: Annual Report Fall 2014

Annual Report 2013—2014

“No task before our nation is more important than expanding and improving the educational opportunities of all our people.”

- President John F. Kennedy, February 6, 1962

A s it was in the past, so shall it be in the future. St. Catherine’s just wrapped up 125 years of amazing

mission work in educating young men. Following in the footsteps of our founders, we have been very busy expanding and improving our educational, community, faith, and ministry pillars for the benefit of all.

Sometimes, our commitments can lead to more outflow than inflow, as in fiscal year 2013/2014. The year ended in a deficit position due to lower than anticipated enrollment and increasing financial aid support; however, a strong balance sheet position carries us forward along with the support of our SCA families and friends.

The partnership of our alumni and friends – through your time, talent, treasure, and prayers – has kept St. Catherine’s Academy strong since 1889, and this year has been no exception. We are delighted to report that your eager participation and enthusiastic support has brought an outpouring of generosity in all areas of school fundraising. A generous and enduring bequest from Stephen J. Meaney, class of 1936, and his wife Irene, helped to bring revenue from donations and net profit from events to more than double our budgeted goals.

As our partners in education, you have helped us to:

Award $450,696 in tuition assistance to 77 students in need

Implement a 1:1 laptop program for cadets in grades 6-8

Open a new transitional kindergarten class for students as young as four

Complete a variety of renovations to enhance the safety, security, and beauty of our campus

We are daily grateful to you for supporting the cadets of St. Catherine’s through your contributions, volunteer efforts, and prayers. We look forward to continued opportunities to serve our students and accomplish our mission in the new academic year.

Best regards,

Joanna Ronan

Early Education Program Gives

Students a Great Start!

S t. Catherine’s Academy is excited to announce the opening of our transitional kindergarten

(TK) class, which serves as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. TK is part of the new Early Education Program (EEP). Consisting of TK and kindergarten, the EEP is a two-year developmental program that provides students with a welcoming and nurturing environment to learn foundational academic skills and develop a love for learning.

The EEP is arranged around a set of themes that are designed to get students excited about learning. “If you find what students like, they will be motivated to learn,” says Mrs. Fristensky, the EEP Director.

This year, students will study dinosaurs, outer space, model citizens, and the environment as their four themes. With these themes as the backdrop, students will learn the skills and standards for their respective grade levels. TK students will continue with these same themes next year, going more in depth and practicing new skills.

TK and kindergarten students are taught by separate teachers in a large, collaborative classroom environment. Each class follows its own curriculum, and students learn skills appropriate for their age and development. Students from both classes come together for instruction in music, Spanish, computers, and physical education.

Faith and spirituality are key components of the EEP. Students learn how much God loves them and how they are called to love and respect each other. They explore different methods of prayer and attend Mass with the school community.

We are delighted to offer this fun and unique program to give our youngest students a great start as they begin their educational experiences!

Help Us Spread the Word!

Do you know a young man who would be a good fit for this new program? Contact our admissions office to learn more: (714) 772-1363 or [email protected].

Clockwise from top left: Students in the Early Education Program (EEP) benefit from a variety of technological resources, including interactive SMART projectors, iPads, and Internet safety lessons. ►Of course, play is an important part of learning for our cadets in TK, kindergarten, and beyond. ►Though too young to participate in the military program, EEP students get to know our military department staff, partner with a cadet “big brother,” and even learn a few basic drill moves. ►The EEP is arranged around a set of four themes; this year one theme is dinosaurs.

Volunteer Spotlight: Board of Directors

Special thanks to our Board of Directors for sharing their time, expertise, and leadership! The Board helps guide and support St. Catherine’s Academy by working on strategic planning and attending meetings and events throughout the year. Directors also serve on one of four subcommittees: finance, facilities, marketing, and education. The Board is pictured here with the congregational leadership of the Dominican Sisters of MSJ. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Board and all volunteers for sharing your time and talents with SCA and our students!

Recap: 125th anniversary Celebration

Page 6

Esprit de Corps: Annual Report Fall 2014

S t. Catherine’s 125th Anniversary Celebration on March 22, 2014, was a day to remember! The

celebration included a greeting by the Bishop of Orange, Kevin Vann, and Anniversary Mass celebrated by Most Reverend George Niederauer, Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco and SCA alumnus (1950). Following the liturgy, the event continued with a reception lunch, alumni band performance, alumni vs. cadet drill competition, historical displays, open house, student art show, and a military-style birthday cake cutting ceremony.

St. Catherine’s Academy welcomed home approximately 75 alumni ranging from the class of

1946 to the class of 2013 and about 65 Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose who have previously ministered at SCA. In all, over 500 alumni, current students, staff, and friends attended the celebration, traveling from as far away as Seattle, Indiana, and Mexico.

“It was a joy to celebrate the incredible history of St. Catherine’s Academy with so many of our alumni and friends,” said Sister Johnellen Turner, OP, Administrator/Principal of St. Catherine’s Academy. “We feel privileged to have touched so many lives during our 125-year history.”

The Celebration Continues!

Join us on Saturday, March 21, 2015, for the concluding celebration of our 125th Anniversary. Activities will include a spaghetti lunch, campus tours, outdoor activities, and opportunity drawing. Tommy Lasorda will emcee the event.

As technology continues to evolve and present new opportunities to enhance the educational experience, St. Catherine’s is committed to providing the latest tools—opening up a world of possibilities for our students in the classroom and beyond. This year we have installed new interactive projectors with SMART software, equipped all teachers with laptop/tablet ultrabooks, implemented a personal laptop program for students in 6th-8th grade, and appointed a coordinator to help teachers utilize new technology. These advances are making learning more efficient, more engaging, and more effective for our cadets!
