    To recall and celebrate the positive contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historianCarter G. Woodson established Black History Week beginning on Feb. 12, 1926. In 1976, as part of the nations bi-centennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month.

    The estimated African American population in Iowa as of July1, 2008. African Americans constitute 2.7 percent of the statestotal population. In 1980 African Americans made up 1.4 per-cent of the states total population.
