COUGAR NEWS February 14, 2014 No. 06 Clavet School CLAVET PRE-KINDERGARTEN The Clavet Pre-Kindergarten program for three and four year old children runs Monday to Thursday 9am-12pm. The open house for Pre-Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year will be on Thursday, May 1st from 5pm- ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE The start of the month of February marks the halfway point in the school year. It is both a chance for reflection and forward planning. As our elementary students continue on with the school work, I’m sure many of our parents are as impressed as I with the tremendous progress they have demonstrated over these past 5 months. For our high school students the month of February is a chance for renewal as it is the beginning of the second semester and for a many a whole new set of classes. Our school has been host to band concerts, musicals, our elementary Christmas concert, and a multitude of sporting events. It will not be long before a new set of activities, both artistic and athletic, begin and we encourage our students to get involved. We would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the support of the community through the halfway point of the year. Whether it be the work of our SCC members in organizing the Passport to Clavet and Meet the Teacher night in the fall, the weekly support of parents who make time to organize hotdog sales in our elementary end, the thoughtful staff appreciation lunch that we recently enjoyed through the generosity of a number of Clavet School parents and community members, or the countless other ways that you support us, we at Clavet School would like to thank you. We feel fortunate to have such a great community and look forward to the next five months working together. JR BOYS BASKETBALLThe team finished their league schedule with a 5W-1L record. They advanced through playoffs to the Div championship Feb 8 in Warman. The Cougars lost their opening game to Dalmeny in a close game and lost by 1 point to Warman in the 3rd place game. The team had a number of players who had never played basketball before so the improvement shown by the team was great. Thank you to Clavet alumni Shelbie F. and Kyle Z. for coaching the team.

Counsellor’s CornerPart 5Solicit Good Intentions, Not Good BehaviorAs parents we can become very focused on raising “good kids.” We often think that having “good kids” means that they show “good behavior.” Neufeld suggests that it’s more important to focus on fostering good intentions within a child rather than trying force specific behaviors. Good intentions are like gold. They are the seeds of values and the precursor to a sense of responsibility. While there are times when we need our kids to comply with our requests it is often counterproductive if we get our kids to comply through the force of our will rather than their own connection with us and their desire to please us. The goal of

soliciting intentions from the child is to draw attention away from our will and toward the child’s. Some examples of things we say when we’re focused on our will:“You have to…”“I told you to…”“I want you to…”“You must…”Things we say when focused on building good intentions:“Can I count on you to…”“Do you think you could…”“Are you ready to…”“Do you think you can handle it now?”“Are you willing to give it a try?”According to Neufeld soliciting good intentions is a safe and highly effective parenting practice. It transforms kids from the inside out. He argues that what can’t be accomplished through getting good intentions isn’t likely to be achieved by more forceful means.Susan Halbach

2ND ANNUAL COUGARS FOR THE CURE PINK BASKETBALL GAMEFeb 12, Clavet SR Girls hosted Bethlehem High School from Saskatoon in the 2nd annual PINK game. Funds were raised through pink cotton candy sales (thank you to Mr Oleksyn for donating supplies and making the candy), a bake sale by the girls team and donations. Bethlehem also had a fundraiser at their school and made a generous donation. The gym was packed with Clavet students wearing PINK to support the Cougars and the great cause. It was an exciting game and over $1000 was raised for the Saskatoon Cancer Agency. Thank you for Coach Williams and the Sr Girls Basketball team for continuing our Cougars for the Cure campaign.

JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL The Girls Jr Basketball team had a very successful season this year. They started their twice weekly practices in November with the goal to play 10 games, participate in 2 tournaments, and end up in the league finals.  After 3 months of dedication, skill building, and team development from the 16 players that comprised our basketball team, we ended up playing 15 games which included the 2 tournaments and finished 3rd out of the 25 schools in the Prairie Spirit School District.  We averaged 48 points per game, and by the end, every player had experienced at least 1 court basket.A tremendous effort was demonstrated by each and every player and witnessed every time they stepped on the court regardless if that was for a game or a practice.  The support and encouragement shared for fellow teammates during games was contagious, and when one player excelled, we all excelled.  We shared in the drama of the defensive battles, and the finesse of a well-executed offensive play.  The parents and friends were so involved in our success that they filled the gyms at our tournaments, and even entertained us with their bench side wave and applause.
