In 1966, soon after William S. Richardson became Chief Justice of the Hawai‘i Supreme Court, he described his plans for a law school to serve the people of Hawai‘i. Chief Justice Richardson understood that those with the greatest stake in building a more just and equitable society often were denied the opportunity to attend law school because of the prohibitive distance and cost. Determined that all in

Hawai‘i should have the opportunity to obtain an excellent legal education, he fought an uphill battle over many years to create and to help shape Hawai‘i’s only law school.

Because of C.J. Richardson’s vision and perseverance, nearly 2,500 men and women-many from underrepresented, minority, and Native Hawaiian communities—are now practicing law in the public and private sectors, holding elected office, leading community and legal services organizations, teaching law, and serving in the judiciary.

Through C.J. Richardson’s leadership and advocacy, the Law School has changed a great deal since it opened in 1973, moving from temporary classrooms in the quarry to the permanent buildings on Dole Street in 1982-1983. Now the Law School is bursting at the seams with new programs, more legal clinics, and a larger student body. Of the initial funds raised in honor of our beloved C.J. Richardson, $35,000 will endow the Amy C. Richardson Fund, which provides scholarships, established in perpetuity in memory of C.J. Richardson’s wife. The remaining funds will directly support the Law School’s Building Excellence Project—to design, renovate, and build new sustainable space that is desperately needed.

In C.J. Richardson’s 90th year, please join us to celebrate and honor him and to help realize his dream of an absolutely first-rate legal education for the future leaders of Hawai‘i, the Pacific, and, indeed, the world.
