_IL WARNING: Experiences In-dicates that alcohol blended

fuels (called gasohol orthose using ethanol or methanol)can attract moisture which leads to

separation and formation of acidsduring storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage.

NOTE: To avoid engine problems, thefuel system must be emptied before

    F-001072M

storage for 30 days or longer. Start theengine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use the car-buretor bowl drain to empty residualgasoline from the float chamber. Usefresh fuel next season. See the Stor-

age section in this manual for additionalinformation.

Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

    6. As the engine warms up, movechoke lever to "1/2 choke" position. When engine runs smoothly, movechoke lever to "No Choke" Posi-tion.

NOTE: Allow the engine to warm up forseveral minutes before blowing snow intemperatures below 0°F.

  • WARM START

If restarting a warm engine after a shortshutdown, leave choke at "OFF" and donot push the primer button. If the en-gine fails to start, follow the Cold Startinstructions.

    FROZEN STARTER

If the starter is frozen and will not turn

engine:1. Pull as much rope out of the starter

as possible.2. Release the starter handle and let it

    snap back against the starter.

If the engine still fails to start, repeat thetwo previous steps until the enginestarts. Then continue with the direc-tions for cold start.

To help prevent possible freeze-up ofrecoil starter and engine controls, pro*ceed as follows after each snow remov-

al job.1. With the engine running, pull the

starter rope hard with a continuousfull arm stroke three or four times.

Pulling of starter rope will produce aloud clattering sound. This is notharmful to the engine or starter.

    2. With the engine not running, wipe allsnow and moisture from the carbu-retor cover in area of control levers.

Also move throttle control, chokecontrol, and starter handle severaltimes.

_b WARNING: Never run en-gine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. En-

gine exhaust contains CARBONMONOXIDE, AN ODORLESS ANDDEADLY GAS. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away fromany moving parts on engine andsnow thrower. The temperature of muffler andnearby areas may exceed 150 F.Avoid these areas.

DO NOT allow children or youngteenagers to operate or be nearsnow thrower while it is operating.

_L ARNING: Do not attemptto remove any item that maybecome lodged in auger

    without taking the following precau-tions:

    Release auger drive lever.

Move the ignition lever to thestop position to stop the engine.

    Disconnect spark plug wire.

Do not place.your hands In theauger or discharge chute. Use apry bar.

    SNOW THROWING TIPS

    1. When the handle is raised, the au-ger blades will engage the groundand the snow thrower will move for-

ward. When the auger drive lever isreleased, the auger blades will stop.If the blades do not stop, see "HowTo Adjust The Auger Drive Cable" inthe Service And Adjustment section.

    2. Most efficient snow throwing is ac-complished when the snow is re-moved immediately after if falls.

    3. For complete snow removal, slightlyoverlap each previous path.

    4. Whenever possible, discharge thesnow down wind.

    F-001072M

    5.

    6,

The distance the snow will be dis-

charged can be adjusted by movingthe discharge chute deflector. Raisethe deflector for more distance orlower the deflector for less distance.

In windy conditions, lower the chutedeflector to direct the dischargedsnow close to the ground where it isless likely to blow into unwantedareas.

    7. For safety and to prevent damageto the snow thrower, keep the areato be cleared free of stones, toysand other foreign objects.

    8. Do not use the auger propelling fea-ture when clearing gravel or

    13

  • crushed rock driveways. Move thehandle down to slightly raise the au-ger.

    9. The forward speed of the snowthrower is dependent on the depthand weight of the snow. Experiencewill establish the most effectivemethod of using the snow throwerunder different conditions.

    10. After each snow throwing job, allowthe engine to run for a few minutes. The snow and accumulated ice will

melt off the engine.11. Clean the snow thrower after each

use.12. Remove ice, snow and debris from

the entire snow thrower. Flush withwater to remove all salt or otherchemicals. Wipe snow thrower dry.

    DRY AND AVERAGE SNOW

    1. Snow up to eight inches deep canbe removed rapidly and easily bywalking at a moderate rate. Forsnow or drifts of a greater

depth, slow your pace to allow thedischarge chute to dispose of thesnow as rapidly as the auger re-ceives the snow.

    2. Plan to have the snow discharged inthe direction the wind is blowing.

    WET PACKED SNOW

Move slowly into wet, packed snow. Ifthe wet, packed snow causes the augerto slow down or the discharge chute be-gins to clog, back off and begin a seriesof short back and forth jabs into thesnow. These short back and forth jabs, four to six inches, will "belch" the snowfrom the chute.

    SNOW BANKS AND DRIFTS

In snow of greater depth than the unit, use the same "jabbing" technique de-scribed above. Turn the dischargechute away from the snow bank. Moretime will be required to remove snow ofthis type than level snow.

    ENGINE

_IL ARNING: Drain the gaso-line outdoors, away fromfire or flame.

Gasoline must be removed or treated to

prevent gum deposits from forming inthe fuel tank, filter, hose, and carburetorduring storage. Also, during storage al-cohol blended gasoline that uses etha-nol or methanol (sometimes calledgasohol) attracts water. It acts on thegasoline to form acids which damagethe engine.

To remove gasoline, run the engineuntil the fuel tank is empty and the

    engine stops.

If you do not remove the gasoline, use fuel stabilizer supplied with unitor purchase Craftsman Fuel Stabi-lizer No. 3550. Add fuel stabilizer to

any gasoline left in the tank to mini-mize gum deposits and acids. It thefuel tank is almost empty, mix stabi-lizer with fresh gasoline in a sepa-rate container and add some to thefuel tank.

Always follow the instruction on thestabilizer container. After the stabi-lizer is added to the fuel tank, runthe engine at least ten minutes toallow the mixture to reach the car-buretor.

    Change the engine oil.

Lubricate the piston/cylinder area.First, remove the spark plug andsquid a few drops of clean engineoil into the spark plug hole. Next, cover the spark plug hole with a ragto absorb oil spray. Then, pull two orthree times on the recoil starter ropeto rotate the engine. Finally, installthe spark plug and attach the sparkplug wire.
