St. Patrick Catholic Church | 5
What does it mean to be a deacon? [Continued from last week]
The word "Deaconate" is derived from "Deacon" in Greek, which means "servant." It is the first level or degree of the Sacrament of order in the Catholic Church, before the priesthood and the episcopate. It is important to note that according to Canon Code 1031 there are two types of deacons, without
changing their functions. There are temporary deacons, who, as their name implies, their service is in passing before receiving the order of the priesthood. There are also permanent deacons, also as their name indicates, they will always remain in their condition of deacons. But, let's discuss permanent deacons, these are men who can be celibate and before receiving the order of deaconate they must be at least 25 years old; as well as those married in the sacrament of marriage, they must necessarily be at least 35 years old at the time of their ordination (CC 1031s2). The preparation to be a permanent deacon is defined by the diocese to which the aspirant remains, but always in accordance with the provisions of Canon Code 1032s3. My experience to meet this requirement was six years of training, instructed according to the curricula agreed between the Diocese of Laredo and the University of St. Thomas in Houston. The figure of the permanent Deacon can be confused as a
priest and he is not, or as a dressed altar boy, which he is not. He is a Reverend, Permanent Deacon, prepared by his diocese, to serve Christ in his neighbor, with the homeless, the sick, the deprived of liberty, the adults confined to retirement homes, his Bishop, Most Reverend James Anthony Tamayo, to the community, to his Church and to serve and support in the parish of his Diocese to which he has been assigned. Pope Francis has repeatedly referred to the figure of the permanent deacon, the most recent being that of May 5 of this sobering 2020, stating it as follows: “Deacons are not second-rate priests. They are part of the clergy and live their vocation as a family and with the family. They are dedicated to the service of the poor who bear in themselves the face of the suffering Christ. They are the guardians of service in the Church. Let us pray that deacons, faithful to the service of the word and of the poor, will be a life-giving sign for the whole Church.” Today in our diocese of Laredo we have 29 active permanent deacons and aware of the need to serve their Church ("since the harvest is great and the workers are few"), another 22 are being prepared, of which 12 are In their fifth year of preparation and with God's favor, they will soon be serving our community. We are proud that two of them belong to this Saint Patrick parish, our brothers in Christ Jesus, Steve Landin and Ramiro Garza, who have heard and heeded the call of God. There are 10 more aspirants in preparation, who will enter their second year, for whom we must also pray so that they conclude in due course, this purpose to the call of Jesus Christ. As Pope Francis says, “we live as a family and with the family”, you are my family and here at home my wife Luz, and my children, Paula, Miguel and Adrián. I conclude by sharing with you the most revealing and committed part that I experienced on the day of my ordination on October 4, 2014 in our Cathedral of San Agustín; our Bishop James Tamayo, put the Gospel Book in my hands and told me: “learn it, practice it and teach it”. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, I am here to serve you.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of
our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole
and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health
and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask
this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
