PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Good Friday – April 2, 2021 – 7:00 PM

WELCOME!

We love that you are here today! Our service is printed for you in its entirety in this worship folder. Or you can follow along as the service is projected on the front wall.

Restrooms are located in the hallways to the right as you exit the worship space, as well as across the hallway as you enter into the school hall.

Quiet room If you have a young child or nursing infant and are in need of a quiet place which still allows you to see/hear the service you may use the library in the back of this worship space.

A Connection Card and pen are found on each section of chairs. We ask that you fill out a Connection Card for your family. Please drop the card and pen in the basket by the door as you leave today.

DARKNESS, SILENCE, SOUND

Tenebrae means “darkness” or “shadows.” The quiet and symbolic nature of this service recalls the dread seriousness of our sin and the amazing heights of God’s love. Just think how Jesus chose to suffer all this to save us! The extinguishing of the candles and progressive dimming of the lights recalls the darkness that covered the land while Jesus hung on the cross. The loud sound recalls the stone at Jesus’ tomb. The candle returned and left burning anticipates Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter.

NO BLESSING TODAY

The typical blessing at the conclusion of the service is omitted, as today’s service is considered part of one continuous observance of the culmination of our Savior’s ministry which began Maundy Thursday and concludes with the blessing as we celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection Easter Morning—6:00 am Sunrise Service, 8:00, 9:15 & 10:30 am Festival Services.

DIALOGUE ON THE HOLY CROSS

Far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14) For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in (Christ), and through him to reconcile all things to himself (whether things on earth or in heaven)

by making peace through the blood of his cross. (Colossians 1:19-20) (Christ) humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8) Christ also suffered once for sins in our place,

the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. (1 Peter 3:18) He was handed over to death because of our trespasses

and was raised to life because of our justification. (Romans 4:25) God erased the record of our debt brought against us by his legal demands. This record stood against us,

but he took it away by nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:14) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

As it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) When they carried out everything that was written about him,

they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. (Acts 13:29)

Page 4: A Achurch.peacewels.org/files/lentEaster/Good_Friday... · 2021. 5. 12. · As it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) When they carried out

4

Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal. In view of the joy set before him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame,

and has taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne. (Hebrews 12:2) He himself carried our sins in his body on the tree so that we would be dead to sins and alive to righteousness.

By his wounds you were healed. (1 Peter 2:24) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,

but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18)

HYMN Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle | 122:1,4

Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle; Sing the ending of the fray. Now above the cross, the trophy, Sound the loud triumphant lay. Tell how Christ, the world’s Redeemer, As a victim won the day.

Faithful cross, true sign of triumph, Be for all the noblest tree; None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit your equal be, Symbol of the world’s redemption, For your burden makes us free.

Please be seated when presider indicates.

LESSON Leviticus 16:11-19 11After Aaron has presented the bull for his sin offering to make atonement for himself and

for his household, he shall slaughter the bull for his sin offering. 12Then he is to take a full pan of glowing coals from the top of the altar, which is before the LORD, and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and bring them inside the veil. 13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD so that the cloud from the incense covers the atonement seat that is over the Testimony, so he will not die. 14He is to take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger upon the surface of the atonement seat on its east side. He is also to sprinkle some of the blood seven times with his finger in front of the atonement seat.

Page 5: A Achurch.peacewels.org/files/lentEaster/Good_Friday... · 2021. 5. 12. · As it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) When they carried out

5

15He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering of the people. He is to bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he had done with the blood of the bull. He is to sprinkle it on the atonement seat and in front of the atonement seat. 16He shall make atonement for the sanctuary to cleanse it from the uncleanness of the Israelites and from their rebellions and all their sins. This is what he shall do for the Tent of Meeting, which dwells in the midst of Israel’s uncleanness. 17When he enters to make atonement in the sanctuary, no other person may be in the Tent of Meeting until he has come out. In this way he shall make atonement for himself and his household, as well as for the entire assembly of Israel.

18He shall then come out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He is to take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat and smear it all around the horns of the altar. 19With his finger he is to sprinkle some of the blood upon it seven times. In this way he is to purify it and set it apart from the uncleanness of the Israelites.

HYMN Not All the Blood of Beasts | 128

Not all the blood of beasts On Israel’s altars slain Could give the guilty conscience peace Or wash away the stain. But Christ, the heav’nly Lamb, Takes all our sins away, A sacrifice of nobler name And richer blood than they. In faith I place my hand On that dear head divine, As penitently here I stand And lay on him my sin. My soul looks back to see The burden you did bear When hanging on the cursed tree—I know my guilt was there! Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice And sing his bleeding love.

6

LESSON Hebrews 7:26-28 26This is certainly the kind of high priest we needed: one who is holy, innocent, pure,

separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices on a daily basis, first for his own sins and then for the sins of the people. In fact, he sacrificed for sins once and for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests men who have weaknesses. But the word of the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been brought to his goal forever.

HYMN When I Survey the Wondrous Cross | 125:1,3

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Silence for meditation.

LESSON John 19:17-30 17Carrying his own cross, he went out to what is called the Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic

is called Golgotha. 18There they crucified him with two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle.

19Pilate also had a notice written and fastened on the cross. It read, “Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews.”

20Many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.

21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that ‘this man said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’”

22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts,

one part for each soldier. They also took his tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it. Instead, let’s cast lots to see who gets it.” This was so that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

Page 7: A Achurch.peacewels.org/files/lentEaster/Good_Friday... · 2021. 5. 12. · As it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) When they carried out

7

They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

So the soldiers did these things. 25Jesus’ mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene were

standing near the cross. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his

mother, “Woman, here is your son!” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother!” And from that time this disciple took her into his own home.

28After this, knowing that everything had now been finished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I thirst.”

29A jar full of sour wine was sitting there. So they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished!” Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit. Please be seated when presider indicates.

Silence for meditation.

The third candle is extinguished.

HYMN Glory Be to Jesus | 103

Glory be to Jesus, Who in bitter pains Poured for me the lifeblood From his sacred veins. Grace and life eternal In that blood I find; Blest be his compassion, Infinitely kind. Blest through endless ages Be the precious stream Which from endless torments Did the world redeem. Abel’s blood for vengeance Pleaded to the skies, But the blood of Jesus For our pardon cries. Oft as earth exulting Lifts its praise on high, Angel hosts rejoicing Make their glad reply. Lift we, then, our voices, Swell the mighty flood; Louder still and louder Praise the precious blood!

SERMON Matthew 27:50-51

The Curtain Veil 50After Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51Suddenly, the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and rocks were split.

HYMN Lamb of God | 748 The Soloist will sing the first verse. The congregation joins in the refrain and the remaining verses.

Your only Son, no sin to hide, But you have sent him from your side To walk upon this guilty sod And to become the Lamb of God. Refrain O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! Oh, wash me in his precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. Your gift of love they crucified. They laughed and scorned him as he died: The humble King they named a fraud And sacrificed the Lamb of God. Refrain I was so lost; I should have died, But you have brought me to your side To be led by your staff and rod And to be called a lamb of God. Refrain

LESSON Isaiah 55:6-11 6Seek the LORD while he may be found! Call on him while he is near! 7Let the wicked man abandon his way. Let an evil man abandon his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will show him mercy. Let him turn to our God, because he will abundantly pardon. 8Certainly my plans are not your plans, and your ways are not my ways, declares the LORD. 9Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my plans are higher than your plans. 10Just as the rain and the snow come down from the sky and do not return there unless they first water the earth, make it give birth, and cause it to sprout, so that it gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11in the same way my word that goes out from my mouth will not return to me empty. Rather, it will accomplish whatever I please, and it will succeed in the purpose for which I sent it.

PRAYER

Let us pray. Most holy God, look with mercy on us, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, given over into the hands of the wicked and suffer death on the cross. Help us to stay faithful to Him, our only Savior, who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

HYMN Christ, the Life of All the Living | 114:1,3,6,7

Christ, the Life of all the living, Christ, the Death of death, our foe, Who, thyself for me once giving To the darkest depths of woe— Through thy suff’rings, death, and merit I eternal life inherit. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto thee. Thou hast borne the smiting only That my wounds might all be whole; Thou hast suffered, sad and lonely, Rest to give my weary soul; Yea, the curse of God enduring, Blessing unto me securing. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto thee. Thou has suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me. Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto thee. Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For thy sorrows deep and sore, For thine anguish in the garden, I will thank thee evermore, Thank thee for thy groaning, sighing, For thy bleeding and thy dying, For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise thee, Lord, on high.

11

THE BURIAL Matthew 27:57-66 57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named

Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. 58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid it in his own new tomb that he had cut in the rock. He rolled a large stone over the tomb’s entrance and left. 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there sitting opposite the tomb.

62On the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered in the presence of Pilate 63and said, “Sir, we remembered what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64So give a command that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise his disciples might steal his body and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead.’ And this last deception will be worse than the first.”

65Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and posting a guard.

HYMN Rest, O Christ, from All Your Labor | 718

Rest, O Christ, from all your labor; Sleep within your borrowed tomb. Foes have crucified and bound you Fast within death’s narrow room. Pilate’s guards stand watching, waiting Where they rolled the sealing stone. All unseen another watches: God will not forsake his own.

Page 12: A Achurch.peacewels.org/files/lentEaster/Good_Friday... · 2021. 5. 12. · As it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13) When they carried out

12

Peace at last from all your anguish, Wounds in hand and feet and side. Enemies no longer mock you, Scourged, abandoned, crucified. Faithful women gather spices, Weep for you whom sin has slain. Though they mourn, the God who guards you Will not let your death be vain. Help us keep this solemn Sabbath As we wait for Easter dawn. Earth’s dark night of sin is passing; Death’s long reign will soon be gone. Christ, in whom the new creation Rises brighter than the sun: May we, as we watch for morning, Trust the vict’ry you have won. As through parting Red Sea waters Israel marched to liberty, So we pass through baptism’s water, Washed by grace, from sin set free. Jesus, risen, living, reigning Now and through eternity: Grant that, through your life undying, We may live victoriously.

CELEBRATE THE VICTORY

Throughout the 7-week Season of Easter, we will celebrate Jesus’ victory over sin,

hell and death and what it means for us now and eternally! The reoccurring

Biblical theme of “Do not be afraid” reaches a new crescendo in the resurrection of

Jesus Christ from the dead. Therefore, our theme for this Easter Season is FEAR

WILL DIE. Let the good news of the empty tomb bring you strength and

confidence from Christ for a life in a broken world full of fears that want to

overwhelm us. Hear His promise that the day is coming when fear, along with

every other ill sin has wrought, will disappear forever!
