PPC’s Historical Banners in the Sanctuary

The brown banner - with the arch at the top -

stands for The Apostles’ Creed, an almost

legendary confession based on Roman baptismal

services of the second century A.D. The arch

commemorates the catacombs where early

Christians took refuge; the fish or ICTHUS was

their secret recognition sign; the Agnus Dei or

Lamb of God represents the resurrection; and

the keys and cross stand for the Apostle Peter,

first leader of the Church. The cross is upside

down because Peter, according to tradition, was

martyred by being crucified upside down.

The green banner - with the big triangle in the

middle - represents The Nicene Creed which

took 318 fathers of the church 36 years to figure

out, possibly because the Emperor Constantine

was picking up the tab. It is a more specific

version of the Apostles' Creed and the earliest

creed officially accepted by both Greek and

Roman orthodoxy. The cross, which is also a

sword, commemorates Constantine, who gets

credit for being the first Christian emperor,

although he was baptized on his deathbed. He

did claim that Jesus came to him in a dream,

holding a sign in his hands and saying "in hoc

signo," or "in this sign conquer". The sign is

supposed to have been the Chi Rho, that

combination of P and X which appears on the

banner and is a monogram of the word for

Christ in Greek. Constantine used the Chi Rho

on his banners, etc., and he conquered. The

dove descending is the Holy Spirit; the hand is

the hand of God, completing the Trinity.

The Scots Confession is represented by the

dark blue banner with the Celtic Cross, the

symbol of our denomination, which John Knox

dashed off in four days in 1561. It make lively

reading, since John was highly indignant about

Mary, Queen of Scots, and he make some very

snide remarks about the Catholic Church. This

banner displays the tartan of the St. Andrew's

cross and is of the Hamilton clan in honor of the

first Scots martyr. (A tartan is a pattern; a plaid

is a garment using a specific pattern.) On the

Bible at the top are the Greek letters Lamda and

Theta, which stand for Logos Theos or Word of

God. John Knox felt the Bible contained

everything to be said on the subject of religion,

so if you can read, you don't need a priest.

The red banner is an eye-catching color and

represents The Heidelberg Catechism, or

Everything You Are Supposed to Know About

God in Case They Ask You, as written under the

sponsorship of Elector Frederick III of Germany

in 1563. One could do worse than memorize

some of those answers, for many years a

required task of children. The tablets of the Ten

Commandments distinguish this banner as a

reminder of a typically Presbyterian doctrine:

you do not obey the Ten Commandments to get

to heaven. Whether you get to heaven or not is

God's business. You obey Him in gratitude for

what He has already given you: His love, His

grace and His understanding of imperfect you.

The Second Helvetic Confession of 1566 is

the light blue banner. Helvetia is what the Swiss

call Switzerland, and this confession was written

by Henrich Bunninger of Zurich, who was a close

friend of John Calvin during the Geneva

experiment in theocracy. Look for the edelweiss

to remind you of Switzerland. The quite realistic

heart in a hand is John Calvin's personal symbol;

the lamp of knowledge represents his doctrine

that education and logic are vital to Christian

faith. The Second Helvetic Confession is a rather

cozy and homey item (unlike Calvin) which

expounds on marriage, divorce, child raising and

a lot of other practical problems, some of them

rather quaint.

Page 9: 9th Sunday after Pentecost August 2, 2020 10:00 AM...August 2, 2020 10:00 AM FOR COMMUNION TODAY If you wish to participate in today’s virtual communion, we invite you to prepare

The purple banner is a particular beauty, which

is ironic since it represents The Westminster

Confession, dourest document of all the

confessions. This confession, the most influential

in American Protestant history, is what helped to

give Puritanism a bad name. It was written in

England in 1646 by a committee. Few things

written by committees read well. Here you have

it all: the All-Seeing and All-Judgmental Eye of

God and the complete authority of the Bible.

(The letters are Alpha and Omega, the first and

last letters in the Greek alphabet - the Word of

God as the Beginning and the End.) The

Westminster Confession propounds the doctrine

of the Elect in all its peculiar detail. Church

fathers revised the Confession in 1903 to allow

all infants who died into heaven, elect or not;

and again in 1953 to present marriage as

something more than a procreational business

arrangement. In 1967, they gave up tinkering

with it and wrote a new confession.

The beige banner - or ash-colored as a symbol

of those who died in the fires of World War II -

is fairly obvious as representing the triumph of

the Church over totalitarianism, specifically

Nazism. The Theological Declaration of

Barman was the only official German church

document in opposition to Hitler's concept that

every institution exists to serve the State.

Although it was criticized at the time, and since,

for not going far enough, no educational or

scientific institution in Germany went as far. It

was influential enough to cause the martyrdom

and death of those who signed it. Its

"traitorous" message: the Church exists to sere

Jesus Christ.

The Confession of 1967 is represented by the

turquoise banner. This is a document all

Presbyterians should read and of which all

Presbyterians can be proud. The theme of the

Confession is reconciliation, of all humanity with

each other as brothers and sisters, and of the

individual with God. The sun, moon and stars

remind us of the space age; the reaching hands

of many colors represent the aspirations of all

nations and races; the globe is our spaceship,

Earth, surmounted by the rainbow of hope

(which is also a sign of God's covenant with

humankind - see Noah and the ark). The Celtic

cross is made of macramé, in itself symbolic of

our ancient heritage. The earliest examples of

macramé come from several thousand years

ago, and yet it was a craft craze in the 1960's.
