Reading I: Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18Responsorial Psalm: 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19

Reading II: Romans 8:31b-34Gospel: Mark 9:2-10

Light from Light

Probably i have told you this story before, but itbears on Sunday’s readings so i will repeat it. icannot remember i had been chosen to give theEaster vigil homily at the hugely packed CollegeChurch at Saint louis university.

There was a complication, of course. i wasscheduled to be on my ordination retreat at thevery same time. no problem. i rode with fourother Jesuits from the retreat place way out in thecountryside, into the city, into the church, into thesacristy, into an alb, out to the altar. need i say thati was very nervous since i had only given a fewhomilies before in my life.

it happened that a huge thunderstorm had struckjust the night before. i had watched it from the sixfoot high glass doors of the retreat house. if youare not from the Midwestern part of the unitedStates you may not know the brute force of ourstorms. Dark rain pouring down, and withoutwarning, volcanic lightning flashes, blistering forthwith naked power. Every single smallest detail ofthe landscape is visible for seconds, as if twentythousand florescent lights had suddenly flashed onand then off again. The tremendous powerhumbled me about my upcoming homily.

The radiance the lightning gave off reminded me ofwhat god told the prophet: “Do not look at medirectly as i pass by; the sight is too much for youreyes.” We are too small, in other words.

The human version of light is candles. This wasdemonstrated for me at Easter vigil. The EasterCandle was lighted from a blazing fire and thelarge assembly lit their small tapers from the oneEaster flame. Because i was in the sanctuary icould witness the soft light glowing forth fromthese countless tiny candles, combining the manypeople into a gentle oneness, a hearth of humanfaces. Wrinkles were forgiven, comforting glow

Spirituality of the Readingsmade each face a vessel which held deep insideitself the quiet light of the lord.

Such a contrast: thunderous power followed soquickly by the warmth and love of small light. itpictured the true contrast between god’stranscendent greatness—too much for humaneyes—and Jesus’ quiet love. As he went about heabsolved wrinkles and crippled legs and unseeingeyes. Jesus is the way for us to glimpse the awfulintensity of god-the-infinite through our tiny, finiteeyes. Jesus is god having become one of us. he islightning turned into candles.

Alright, you say, that is very interesting, but whatabout this week’s gospel? in the TransfigurationJesus the comfort showed himself as god theinfinite fire. My mere encounter with lightningwas nothing compared to this. Why did such afrightening transformation take place?

one appealing speculation would be that Jesusneeded to show them (and us) the true connectionof light with light. At the very center of each boltof lightning is the same stuff that gently shadowsour faulty faces and makes them glow. god cannotunmake himself and put out the light that he is.But he can filter it and offer it to anyone who willlook. . .

. . . and occasionally remove the veil so we don’tforget what we are seeing.
