IN THE NEWS:IN THE NEWS:IN THE NEWS:IN THE NEWS:

The number of injuries and deaths related to all-terrain vehicles will continue to rise unless the Alberta government enacts safety laws, accord-ing to a major study out of the Univ. of Calgary. By June 18, 2012, eight people were killed in Alberta and dozens more injured. Researchers conducted the first comprehensive study of the cost of ATV accidents to give lawmakers in Alberta a clear picture of ATV injuries and deaths, and the cost to the healthcare system. The study analyzed 10 years of data from hospitals across the prov-ince. There were 459 serious trauma cases, including broken spines, broken necks, and serious head injuries. There were 790 deaths. The estimated cost to the healthcare system was about $6.5 million. The study also found that Alberta leads the country in ATV sales and use, with a yearly increase in sales of 50% over the past 8 years. Alberta ac-counts for 1/4 of all sales in Canada. One southern Alberta hospital alone found that increase in ATV sales and use translated into a 3-fold increase in traumatic injuries since 2001.

STEP 1STEP 1STEP 1STEP 1————One day ATV learn to ride/safety awareness session This program is designed to train the youth operator in the safe and efficient use of an all terrain vehicle. This course includes group dis-cussion , demonstration, and practical closed course training, with the greatest emphasis on safe and practical operational skills. Topics include

• Safety practices and strategies • Emergency preparedness • Safety protective gear and equipment • Farm safety • Riding and maneuvering over obstacles • Turning basics

STEP 2— Helmets All participants can enter to win a new approved youth helmet on completion of the program. This is a very important initiative as the majority of serious injuries and deaths are caused by ill fitting hel-mets or riders with no helmets and protection.

Council Notes A couple of months ago we started the process to annex some properties around the Village. After a couple of meetings with Flagstaff County planning staff, it has been decided that annexation is NOT feasible. However, we will be looking into our water and sewer pricing to ensure that everyone is treated fairly. This will require more research and number crunching before any changes are made. We have contracted Focus Engineering for the lagoon expan-sion project. Engineers have been doing preliminary work and we expect that construction tender will be put out in January so that the entire project can be complete by fall of 2015 in compliance with our Alberta Environment Lagoon license. There have been five residences sold in the past couple of months, and a couple of enquiries about the lots in our west-end sub-division. With this in mind, Council has decided that we will go ahead with the installation of power and streetlights in that area, so that these lots are ready to build on. At the June meeting, the price of residential lots in the Village was set at $1.00/square foot, which is the same as lots in Lougheed. Sedgewick is at $1.26/ square foot and Hardisty is $ 2.60 / square foot. Heisler is $2500/lot and Galahad $20/ foot of frontage. These are all lots that were developed many years ago, while we have invested a considerable amount in installing new infra-structure to our 7 lots at the west end. July is holiday month, so Council meeting is cancelled. Wayne will be on holiday all of July, so any concerns should be di-rected to the Village Office. Jay Stuckey will be on duty until July 18, then Dell will be on duty for waterplant only.

Have a great summer everyone and travel safe!

ACDC The 4-H Amazing Race was a huge success. Thanks to all the groups that participated, we came up with some really fun events. Your participation made our community look great. Our thanks to Nick and Donna Kozak for the huge gift of plants to top up our Main Street Boxes. Thanks also to Elizabeth and Pearl for help-ing out with the watering.
